It's bizarre to read these newspaper stories about people who were well into six figure salaries now working minimum wage retail. At least the constant whining on slashdot about "if you have the skills you'll always have a job" has wound down significantly.
You interview with MARVIN -- Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network (or something like that). You dial a 1-800 phone number on a specific day, and a computer asks you the questions an interviewer would ask.
"I've been ordered to interview you about unemployment insurance. Here I am, brain the size of a planet and they ask me to interview you about unemployment insurance. Call that job satisfaction? 'Cos I don't."
"Life, loathe it or ignore it, you can't like it."
Penny Arcade already struck back when they replaced the original offending strip with a message about American Greetings, and the e-mail address of the person who sent the letter. I'm sure she got a sizeable amount of poorly spelled, vicious hate mail.
Irrelevant. It's not just tech jobs that are hard to find, it's ALL jobs. People are fighting over retail jobs at this point. A 40k job working with Windows would be heaven; but even those jobs are insanely hard to find. And every opening will result in HUNDREDS of applications.
"I want to risk our company's future by supporting the Linux platform; it's not widely used, and the few people who do use it don't like paying for stuff."
"Sounds a little bit too safe for me. Let's support AmigaOS too, and we'll be SURE to fail!"
Yes, we all know it's ridiculous, none of you reading this have to point that out in excruciating detail. The worst part about these kinds of stories is the avalanche of posts making bad jokes ("I'm going to patent air! I'm going to patent the alphabet!"), constructing elaborate metaphors, or making snide comments about MS, Amazon, or what have you. Don't preach to the converted. We all know.
Alright, I'm not defending Cameron, but let's be honest, despite the protestations of some the anime and manga the Japanese give us isn't the epitome of perfection. A huge percentage of titles have plot holes you can drive a tanker truck through, and coherence isn't exactly the order of the day.
The manga is very episodic and very discordant - it's not internally consistent, meaning sometimes she looks like one thing and has one set of abilities, and at the whim of Kashiro he'll go off on a whole different tangent.
Ico was amazing; the movement of the characters was so expressive that it kind of reminded me of Bunraku theater.
If you want to talk about ability to freak you out, look at the ghosts in Thief 2. Sweet screaming monkeys those things are creepy.
Worst was that hidden area on...hmm...was it the 2nd level? With the darkness full of demons and all those twisty little corners.
And of course, the images that flashed before your eyes when you closed your eyes and tried to go to sleep were kind of scary too.
Ico, Deus Ex, Shenmue.
Too much Amateur Everything.
Mu, how come I keep hearing this in my head?
I dunno, schizophrenia?
Nah, Albany is the capital of New York. 3 hours or so to the northwest.
NYC, on the other hand, is the capital of the FREAKING WORLD. Ha! We're the lords of the universe, look upon us and despair!
It depends on the group. Some are quite useful and fun. A lot aren't.
I guess you haven't actually read it.

A JD is no better than an MBA or a PhD in a bullshit field (such as literature, various "ethnic" studies, and so on).
Bye bye credibility.
If engineers wrote specifications like lawyers (politicians ~ lawyers) write laws the Internet would never fucking work.
And if engineers wrote laws like they write specifications, the whole society wouldn't work.

Your journey to the Dark Side is complete.
Finding a file isn't always easy, downloading isn't always reliable.
It will be a lot easier than Kazaa though, and more reliable. As long as they charge a reasonable rate I plan on using it.

"Great idea, Bob!"

Sounds like valid criticism to me.
I still think it's good, but it's vastly overrated in geek circles, especially on slashdot.
Yeah, what's next, putting a former government official convicted of violating the Constitution in charge of spying on US citizens?
Life expectancy != average lifespan.
Yeah, 2000 calories isn't starvation, but it's a fairly restrictive diet.
