The posters here criticizing the Catholic Church have for the most part no clue what they're talking about. Anyone who thinks they can define the actions of billions of people in dozens of countries across 2000 years of history that simply has a screw loose.
In my experience the people who criticize the Catholic Church the most know the least about it (blah blah they only want money blah blah).
Anti-Catholicism doesn't bother me; I personally have a lot of problems with the Church both as a political as well as theological entity, and have no problem criticizing them (I'm not a practicing Catholic because of some of these reasons). Ignorance, however, DOES bother me, and these inane blanket comments about what the Church is about just reek of profound ignorance.
Ugh, farscape may be cool but Space: Above and Beyond was mind-numbingly dull. Almost as bad as Earth 2 or Earth: Final Conflict in the dullness department.
The sad thing is we're not talking huge sums of money here; 9.5 million, spent on multiple candidates? It's because of the small amounts of money that actually get spent that I don't really think there's much quid pro quo involved. The way the lobbyists really get things done is simply through access. They get more access than us, and can argue their case directly to the lawmaker, while we peons have to hope that some of our letters get through their staffs to them, or some non-profit org marshals enough resources to argue their case.
First of all, it's not billionS, it's a little over 1 billion. Secondly, I was objecting to the way people were implying that "most" meant "almost all"; a SIZEABLE percentage of the Indian population, especially in the large cities (and there are a lot of them, and they are LARGE), can afford them. No, not everyone can, but I don't think that was the purpose of the Simputer.
But it's not like India doesn't have a middle class. From the posts here you'd think everyone's either a pauper or a millionaire; there are millions of Indians for whom $200 USD would be an investment, but a doable one.
No, they realized that everyone hates them, and they're desperate to prevent any real anti-marketing legislation. They probably figure if they give in a little in the beginning they won't have to give in a lot later.
They're called the WILDLIFE Conservation Society; they're most likely concerned with land that human activity takes away from non-human species, not land that neither man nor animal actually uses. With the exception of the outer edges, Antarctica doesn't exactly have a burgeoning wildlife population.
OK. So I didn't read the paper... Perhaps it's great but more than likely it's another one of those pointless academic super high level treaties on software construction that really don't help anyone write better software.
Well good thing your complete ignorance of the paper's contents didn't stop you from putting forth an opinion on its value.
These books are unlikely to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. They are things like "Elmer's Day", where Elmer (a patchwork elephant) wakes up, has a bath in the river, and goes back to to sleep again. Total: about five pages, and those pages are card, not paper. They're about 95% pictures too.
It's obviously a metaphor for the patchwork of conflicting worldviews foisted upon us everyday. The river symbolizes this as a rapid flow which Elmer (representing "everyman") fights against, before finally deciding to go back to sleep (symbolizing death, of course).
Yep, look at New York City. We're blessed with favorable climate conditions, so the air quality's much better than a lot of cities a tenth of our size.
So why shouldn't I be paid for what I did? You want progress? Don't expect it from Junior. If you want it from me, it comes on my terms. If I get greedy (like the dot-com assholes who lost were in it only for the $10 million homes - learn about these losers and you'll see they're nothing but upper class daddy's boys anyways. They didn't earn it), then I'll join Junior and let some efficient young fsck replace me.
So, do you really want to eliminate my incentive? Sure hope you like Junior...
Are you a publicly traded company? If not, nobody really cares what the hell you pay yourself.
That said, it looks like to me like Fritz is going to win this one.
If that happens, I wonder how many of the people on slashdot who predicted an easy win for Kramnik are going to admit they were wrong. Knowing the narcissists here, not many I bet.
A sample of quotes:
For those that are interested, the verdict among the chess world is that the computer is going to be exposed as a joke in this match.
My money is on Kramnik, he will probably not lose a single game.
I agree and so does the military. Those caught doing unethical or downright criminal acts are held accountable. Think Mi Lai
ONE officer was court-martialled; the one who gave the orders. The people who followed the orders were either not charged or not convicted. In other words, they weren't held accountable.
Not that I agree with him on this point, but if anyone else would have said it they would have gotten a lot more positive reaction here. If his name is on the byline, most people here start screaming without even reading it...

No basis to criticize, the Doctrine of Papal Infallibility mandates that HP is divinely suited to do this job.
Including that illicit copy of Carmina Burana the librarians keep under the desk?
What politicians fail to understand is that the major draw to e-tailing is the lack of taxes.
Nope, the major draw to e-tailing is the low prices and convenience of ordering online.

yeh, who the hell could stand up to those red-coats anyway!
The military and logistical support of France?
or how could a ragtag group of frenchies stand up to their imperial govt...
Wasn't due to gun ownership, I can tell you that.
Hmm, interesting link, I didn't know Argon was written by a 16 year old. Kind of makes all the mocking unfair.
Oddly enough, he won't actually limit your right to own sniper rifles. Welcome to Bush's America, where the only Amendment that counts is the 2nd.

Do I want special treatment ? You bet- I want Japanese schoolgirls to ... Oops, off-topic.
Consider that line stolen for future plagiarizing...
I THINK he's referring to Gor, but I'm not sure as I've never read any of them.
If so do a search for Gor on google, and I'm sure you'll get far too much info for your own comfort.

And, there are other things besides Amendments in the Constitution.

No, only people who use "paradigm" in a business or technology-related manner. It's a perfectly valuable philosophical construct when used properly.

University legal departments are the only ones with enough resources to take on the RIAA and win.
Don't forget that hundreds of Universities also have schools of law, which theoretically they could draw on to help them.
