  1. Re:raspberry pi about 50$ does just fine. on Benefits of a Homebrew Router (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

I couldn't agree more. I use the Pi 2 with a USB wireless adapter (check for compatibility with hostapd before you buy) along with the ethernet dongle as well and I've got all the quiet hardware I need to run my home network. I locked Raspbian down, removed all the X11 GUI related crap, and configured a few other things as well (DNS/DHCP) and now have a rock solid router that has only crashed when I did something stupid. The best part is... it's updated on a regular basics! I started doing this years ago when I finally got sick of having to buy a new router/firewall/nat when a firmware bug came out and the manufacturers didn't want to put out a firmware update. As for bandwidth, I like the low-end packages from an ISP. Living in the US, we are getting surrounded by ISP's that have a bandwidth cap. I think of the upper tiers of Internet packages as a faster way to hit my cap. Lets be realistic though, I want to be able to stream video from Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime without buffering at a minimum.

I have a spark plug gaper on my keyring. I've had it since I was 16 years old and was learning how to adjust a carburetor on my first truck. Many many many fouled plugs later I figured mechanics was not my thing. I'm decent with vehicle maintenance now, but I definitely don't make a living at it. I still have the gaper on my keyring though. It's never left my keyrings over the last two decades.

  4. Bad Ideas... on Notification of Server Breach Mistaken For Phishing Email · · Score: 1

I work at an organization that is a member of EDUCAUSE. I received the email in question. I can honestly say that the person that came up with an idea to send out the notification from their marketing company instead of EDUCAUSE themselves should be thinking long and hard about finding a consultant for situations that involve common sense. DO NOT send out emails of the utmost importance and use the same tactics that spammers and scammers use. I would think for an institution involved in higher education, they could have done way better than that. The email looked real enough, much like some spam, but the links not pointing to information on the EDUCAUSE website set off my BS detector as well as many others. None of us clicked on them, but we did call to alert them. I only hope that in the future the EDUCAUSE people learn from this and raise the bar for communicating to their members more professionally. Wise men learn from their mistakes, even wiser men learn from the mistakes OF OTHER PEOPLE.

I hope China denies everything that they are ever accused of, for a looooonnnng time to come. If the corporations of the USA had as much balls as they have removed from the US government, then one day they should start telling China how it is. Won't ever happen, but if you can't prove China actually did it, then treat them like they didn't do it. Either the Chinese government is full of shit, or they really are as incompetent is they say at securing the Chinese Internet infrastructure. Either way, they need to be dealt with accordingly. I dont' know of a single company who would keep an employee if they couldn't tell if the employee is lying to their face or just flat out incompetent as it gets.

  9. Re:Bigger picture, but not whole picture... on Where Will Your Next Gadget Be Made? · · Score: 0

Yes, but you are assuming that the cost of the individual parts and the shipping costs associated with getting them to the manufacturing facility are staying the same. The 4.49% increase in costs you have does not take this into consideration. TFA specifically states that local governments have stepped up enforcement of labor and environmental regulations, driving up production costs. Those are costs all around. Not just the labor costs of one company.

  10. China is not stupid... on Where Will Your Next Gadget Be Made? · · Score: 0

China will not allow themselves to be unseated as the manufacturing backbone of the majority of the world. If anything, they will allow for inflation within the economy, thus effectively negating the salary raises. It is all a math problem and china did not get to where they are now by being stupid.

Why do feminine hygiene products come to mind when I read the word "iPad?" It makes me wonder if the generation 2 will be the iTampon. It would go hand in hand with the iDouche that most of the Apple fanboy crowd I've met already own. Besides, using an iPad to stop the flow of blood would at least give it a useful purpose.
