    Sounds like they settled with the FTC.

    They should've fought, legal fees would very likely be less than $1M.

    How much could a court fine them had they fought and lost? More than $1M?

    Anyone thinking of doing this, watch out for ground loops. You and/or your neighbor might be on different phases and/or have their polarity reversed (non-polarized plugs for example).

    It could blow things up or shock/electrocute people quite fast.

    Throwing away one of your main assets, i.e. people, just doesn't seem to work.

    Less people = less ideas and less work = less productivity and innovation = less competitive.

    Intel has been on a bad path since abandoning faster CPUs. 4 GHz will always be faster than 2 CPUs at 2 GHz except for 100% paralizable problems (which are rare, and programming to take advantage of that is a real pain for the programmer and/or compiler writer - C is weak in this area).

    I still like them better than AMD, because of compatibility and thermal issues (shutting down is better than burning up).

    Sure beats 0 out of 17. Even when we do treat a cancer, it (almost) always comes back given sufficient time.

    If the cancer cells weren't so sneaky and/or the immune systems was doing its job right, the cancer would've been killed before it became a problem.

    PC need to be faster (and have more memory and disk) than 10 years ago because software is slower (and more bloated). Even Linux is a pig now. Try running a 2.6 kernel or any distro on a 486 now!
    Automobiles need to be repaired more often and break down sooner than 10 years ago. Also, everything is farther away (suburban sprawl), you need to drive more (more suburban sprawl and lack of mass transit) and gass costs more, plus gas finances terror.
    Weapons might be cheaper, but judging by how much of our taxes go to pay for it, I doubt it. And are cheap weapons a good thing?
    Things may be cheaper, but as a nation, we work longer, have less health care (and more chronic illness, over 50% of the US is chronically ill - not counting obesity, stress, or allergies in that 50% by the way), spend more time and money on driving and cars, etc.

    Are things actually better?!

    (For those of us making less than $200K that is.)

    Perhaps pull the fuse.

    If there is no separate one, perhaps pulling the anti-lock brake and air bag fuses would work.

    You'd still have normal brakes, you'd lose ABS and air bags, but if as the article says and it is tightly integrated with the above, pulling those fuses may work. No power = no data.

    One of the worst decisions of all time.

    Money isn't even tied to anything with intrinsic values, there is no limit to possible inflation and we have to play games with interest rates (making mortgages expensive) to keep things in check.

    Only allowing as much paper money as we have gold would be sensible. If people lose confidence in moeny they could exchange it to gold.

    People are buying gold like crazy - and it was illegal until recently.

    These are dangerous times.

    End the War on Drugs and repeal the DMCA, then I say let them have their wiretap powers.

    But then you have to trust that your OS's file writing primitives haven't been tampered with. Even if you trust the OS, can you trust the CPU? The hard disk controller? OK, it's really far-fetched, but if your a government institution, you may need to worry about stuff like this.

    MAY need to worry about this?

    How about CERTAINLY HAVE TO worry about this.

    I sure hope the NSA and CIA are making sure no spies or other subversive elements are putting anything bad into the chips at Intel, AMD, etc.

    Gov't doesn't have to worry about legal fees. They have attorneys on staff (including the Attorney General) and also, the gov't can just get a patent screcy order or threaten to get one against a patent troll if the patent can be related to national security.

    Well, media reports aren't meant to be that technical. Chat room, web forum, etc are pretty similar. Just like people call VoIP calls "phone calls" even though technically, they aren't really.

    Now it's good the government is stopping attacks, but I think we might be giving the enemy too much info they could use to circumvent us.

    Like when FOX news was broadcasting troop movements (I just wanted to scream "SHUT UP!")

    Ironic, on a pro-civil liberties site, that I got a message saying anonymous posting was banned, and that logged in posting could get banned too.

    Guess moderation idn't enough, and censorship is in effect.

    Say anything pro-US, pro-gov't or anti-Mac and no longer do people want to protect unpopular speech.
