    That would be a dangerous precedent. Then Slashdot could get sued for destroy web sites it links to and crushes under a massive overload.

    Heck it might even be considered a denial of service attack which rises to the level of terrorism under the USA PATRIOT Act. :) (just kidding).

    Being able to sue and win means having a court enforce a law against someone.

    That law is then possibly being used in an unconstitutional manner.

    A suing B isn't just about A and B. It is A getting the government to act against B.

    Taking your argument to the extreme, imagine this scenario. The laws are changed to allow someone to sue someone else if they publish anything offensive. Now private lawsuits have the power (enforced by gov't) to stifle speech as much as any direct law could (as far as injunctions and damages, civil law doesn't allow imprisonment usually).

    Why is this under "Your rights online"? Sounds more like (the lack of) a companies rights to break securities laws in the stock market.

    Yeah, I know much of the market is computerized and networked, but that is still a stretch to put this under that topic.

    One day computing will get tiresome, and being a "nerd" will lose its appeal.

    There is a lot more to be enjoyed about life. Turn off the PC (or at least the monitor :), go outside, get some sun, get a significant other/others and have some fun. Come to Las Vegas and gamble, we need your help over here. ;)

    They may have even taken some business or finance classes, where they can at least understand that debits are supposed to always equal credits.

    But even our government doesn't understand that.

    If she offers to sell the domain or sue for damages, she'll be accused of trying to profit off of Penguin's book, and would likely lose the domain in a trademark dispute to WIPO.

    Filing a lawsuit preempts any WIPO or other domain dispute processes.

    You have the absolute right to drive a vehicle any time you want, any way you want without registration or license in the US... as long as its on your private property.

    Wrong. DUI on private property is still illegal.

    Let me put in a plug here... PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING YOUR ORGANS. Please... talk to your family about it, get it on your driver's license or living will. Lots of people need organs, and if you don't need yours anymore (and you have no deep religious/philosophical objection), why not donate them? Just a thought...

    There is a risk that medical personnel could declare you brain dead prematurely to harvest your organs. Especially if they know of someone "more worthy". (e.g. you are an older person and the hospital has a 12 year old girl in end stage congestive heart failure.). OK, that sounds a bit paranoid, but not outside the realm of possibility, especially in some countries of the world.

    I bought (back in the day) Whitney Houston's 1991 recording of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and it was well worth it.

    They play it at the last showing of the fountains at Bellagio in Las Vegas, NV (12 AM every night).

    It is awesome, as was Whitney until she let the drugs get out of hand.

    Courts take into account legislative intent.

    Thus a non terrorism realted use of the Patriot Act is very likely to be disallowed - resulting in exclusion of evidence collected using it and any further evidence that was obtained based on the illegally obtained evidence ("fruit of the poisoned tree").

    The self-service check-in option at the airport is a $DEITYsend, too: not checking any bags? Why muck around behind people who have never before seen the inside of an airport? Identify yourself to the kiosk with a credit card or frequent flyer card, get the boarding pass and go.

    That also sounds very convient if you are a terrorist. Now all one would have to do is hack a computer system and board a plane. I don't think the Department of Homeland Security would like that too much.

    Security is more important than convience.

    If the EUCD provisions are like that of the USA DMCA, the answer would seem to be no.

    It would be an "access control" cirucumvention, which would also be illegal (if it is like the DMCA in that regard).

    Come to think of it, it would (under the DMCA) be considered copy protection violation since one has to copy the game into RAM (and such ephemeral copies are considered to infringe under the laws in the US).

    The question is, does the European law have either "access control" or "ephemeral copy" provisions? Are they as crazy as we (USA) are?
