OK, so after this exchange I tried PuppyLinux which worked great off the cd but I got a Kernel Panic error when booting from my hard drive, so then I tried Mepis which was too slow, a bit too much for my aging laptop. Finally I tried DamnSmallLinux which works wonderfully both off the cd and off the harddrive. Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try them all in order till something works. The laptop is old but not quite ancient, it's a Dell something pentium 2, with 128mb RAM and a whopping 8gb hd.
That I can also easily install? Knoppix works while the cd is in and the people at the friendly forum told me I shouldn't try to install it. The Ubuntu Dapper Drake cd won't boot up so that's out. I have an old dell I'm trying to use only for browsing the web so it doesn't need much, just a browser, preferably firefox, and the wireless stuff to work (which knoppix does till I installed it on the hard drive).
I'm moving from Connecticut to North Carolina next week and I've seen the same complaints there about Yankee politics raising the cost of living down there.
I'm not in favor of just shipping money around, and I don't know how to solve the world's problems. I just don't think overpopulation will cause the human race to go under within 100 years. I'm not saying wealth itself makes for lower population growth, but economies where people are busy having careers produce less kids.
Using your own link you'll see that practically all of Europe has a growth rate of less than 1%, and so do most prosperous countries in other areas as well. The fp made the statement that birthcontrol was key to keeping the human race around for another 100 years. I'm trying to make the point that if we can instead focus on spreading wealth and prosperity overpopulation won't be a problem.
Ignoring migration completely most industrialized countries (USA notably excepted) don't have enough births to offset deaths. As China becomes more prosperous the same thing is starting to happen there.
Since birthrates are already too low to sustain growth in the countries with the most wealth it seems that if we spread the wealth we kill two birds with one stone.
perhaps a little color vision would help them to better identify easy meals like pink apes rather than tougher meals like animals with lots of hair....
To mosquitos in Greece those two would be indistinguishable.
It's easy to sit in Canada and not worry about a few degrees of warming each year:)

I've been using lingo.com for over a year, the only issues I've encountered had to do with my ISP. I pay $20 per month and get unlimited calling to North America and Western Europe, can't beat it (email me and I'll get us both a free month:)). Which voip providers do you use that give you problems?
You have a pretty broad definition of statistics, the parent post said you can't have cameraphones at most work places which is why I said employers in my guesstimate. However, even if I'd said maybe 1% of employees are restricted from having cameraphones at work I'd still feel my guesstimate is pretty good. If we were to narrow our population to employed people reading this article on Slashdot I still don't think the number would be over 5%.
the guy said most workplaces. You can make a list of every datacenter on the planet, add the car companies and ISPs someone listed above multiply them by 100 and you're still nowhere in the vicinity of most workplaces.
He says he took only 20 pictures in 3 months with his 2 mp camera phone. Why the hell is he reviewing cameraphones then?
I probably take 20 pics per week on mine, I send them to friends and family straight from the phone, sometimes I post things on my family's website from it. I'll never get a phone without a camera.

Right, which they probably won't keep very much longer since as their middleclass grows by leaps and bounds they won't have that many kids anyway.

that's my whole point, the more prosperous a country becomes the population growth slows down, it's like economic birthcontrol
that answer is so arrogant I don't know where to start

I agree, I have a SE W6001 and it takes one click of a button (two if I use the keylock)
banned from most workplaces? I doubt even 1% of employers have rules against camera phones.
