  5. why you should still encode losslessly on Can We Really Tell Lossless From MP3? · · Score: 1

there is an obvious, but fundamental difference between lossy and lossless encodings: with lossy codecs you can't reconstruct the original data. In the lossy case, that means that if you ever want to edit or process your audio, you will be decoding imperfect data and lossily recoding it. Every time you repeat this, your audio will gather more encoding artefacts. Very soon these artefacts will be audible if not annoying.

The criterion for a trait (in this case bigger stomach) to get to dominate over alternative traits (small stomach), is that it gives the individual a higher chance to reproduce compared to alternative traits. Although having a bigger stomach could be of advantage to a vegetarian for digestion, I doubt that it would make a difference in the probability of reproducing. in modern human society there are simply too many factors that alter that probability (medicine and hospitals in the first place).

  16. Re:Artificial intelligence? on Memristor Minds, the Future of Artificial Intelligence · · Score: 1

I believe that what original poster wanted to express is that it makes no sense to talk of intelligent behavior without a context, and in the limit, a social framework. An action of an individual can be called intelligent in such a social framework, but if you take away that context, what criteria are left to judge the action as an intelligent action?

The point is that the meaning of the predicate "intelligent" is very complex. Unlike "rational", which depends only on (roughly) your definition of goals and actions.

If you go and think for yourself why it is that you don't murder or torture people, you will likely end up with arguments that apply equally to animals. At that point, prohibiting humans to make other humans suffer while allowing them to make animals suffer seems to be more of a convenience than a principled decision, just like it used to be more convenient to deny slaves their right to freedom, and women their right to vote.
