Gimp too limited for power users? Have you tried using the Gimp with its scripting/extension language? It could be that the Gimp is not convenient for power users accustomed to Photoshop, but I wouldn't call it limited.
there is an obvious, but fundamental difference between lossy and lossless encodings: with lossy codecs you can't reconstruct the original data. In the lossy case, that means that if you ever want to edit or process your audio, you will be decoding imperfect data and lossily recoding it. Every time you repeat this, your audio will gather more encoding artefacts. Very soon these artefacts will be audible if not annoying.
The criterion for a trait (in this case bigger stomach) to get to dominate over alternative traits (small stomach), is that it gives the individual a higher chance to reproduce compared to alternative traits. Although having a bigger stomach could be of advantage to a vegetarian for digestion, I doubt that it would make a difference in the probability of reproducing. in modern human society there are simply too many factors that alter that probability (medicine and hospitals in the first place).
You don't understand! Thanks to AT&T's redefinition you will now have broadband internet through your good old 24.4 modem! No hassles, no extra charge, what else could you wish for! I bet they'll call it ``broadband 2'. Three hoorays for marketing!
and worse: they're storing conversations in MP3 format! Any modern criminal would store data in a free format, say OGG, or FLAC if they would be even slightly engineering-minded!
The proper analogy would be:
Them complaining about your local furniture shop putting a lock on your door to prevent you from moving any furniture in our out of your house without the shop's consent.
You should be glad if they do.
at least in VIM, random typing can accidentally put you in a useful mode.
You emphasized accidentally, not useful, right?
In Emacs, just keep Control or Alt pressed (or both) during your random typing. It'll do anything from skipping to the next song, to making telnet connections to arbitrary places in the world. And that includes exporting your calendar and rebooting your computer.
I believe that what original poster wanted to express is that it makes no sense to talk of intelligent behavior without a context, and in the limit, a social framework. An action of an individual can be called intelligent in such a social framework, but if you take away that context, what criteria are left to judge the action as an intelligent action?
The point is that the meaning of the predicate "intelligent" is very complex. Unlike "rational", which depends only on (roughly) your definition of goals and actions.
Right! +1 insightful! Rights are not imposed or absolute, they are a convention of human society, and they have (typically ethical) grounds. If you go and think for yourself why it is that you don't murder or torture people, you will likely end up with arguments that apply equally to animals. At that point, prohibiting humans to make other humans suffer while allowing them to make animals suffer seems to be more of a convenience than a principled decision, just like it used to be more convenient to deny slaves their right to freedom, and women their right to vote.
“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” Albert Einstein
Ethics, morality and values are matters of opinion, not fact.
and some of the opinions out there are pretty lousy!

My mom has been using Ubuntu for 2 years, and she does not even know what a CLI is.
My mom too! But i'm sorry to say she knows now what a CLI is.
If the Vatican really has a sudden outbreak of open-mindedness I strongly insist we settle the issue of evolution first!
most (95%) of my queries are "This table/index. Number 5 please."
Admirable! Despite the strong desire for efficiency, you still have the prudence to phrase you queries politely.
Yale physicists have successfully measured a theoretical 'persistent current'
Yes, they said theoretical! They must've measured it theoretically, I'm sure!
I guess they mean they have measured a quantity that until that point had only be postulated (based on theory).

No thank you, that hard disk is morally defect!
Mind you, I do prefer horses over cars, but how do you frame the free vs. proprietary software as a horse analogy? I'm thinking of the welded cowling.
Now that would be something!
or *is* bing a search engine after all?
In that case they should definitely ditch that darn blue screen application.
We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs...
Indeed, a Microsoft engineer was recently overheard singing:
Every engineer has certain needs
Talkin' 'bout them dirty deeds
To these needs I must concede
Livin' by my lowly creed
[paraphrased from Red Hot Chili Peppers]
Exactly! Real men (m/f) don't boot! ... But admit, we all have our weak moments.
it will be only a matter of time before uncareful drivers will step into their cars and hear a message: "Driving is wrong!".
