take a long hard look at the semiconductor world and in terms of volume x86 makes up under 1% this year compare this to the ARM and MIPS world which make up your Set Top Box, NIC, and mobile phone
having gone from a 5Mbs pipe to a 33.6Kbps connection I know the pain
the problem and it's a huge problem that mesh works only when you have enough people
much like haveing enough people to become econmic to install a 802.11 in a cafe
also it becomes a divide between people that have and have not i.e. those in sparsly populated areas where they wont put an arial because they dont have enough people
there are so many reasons why this will fail
there are lots of Real case studys where this type of thing failed
ok if you are after torque and speed then Electric car is the way to go in terms of cheap and easy
Lotus had a contract with a mod company that pulled out the petrol engine and stuck in 2 electric ones (I forget the name) but they rocked they where kind of crazy 0-60 Mph in about 3-4 seconds which is bike speed
the problem of course is how far they can go which is batterys
fuel cell cars use Electric motors the differance is the way you generate and store it

p.s. the U.S. Guv should be funding alot seeing how you guys are the biggest poluter and also one of the cheapest for fuel wait 10 years and then see how cheap your it is (-;
yeah right they just didnt understand it they came at it from a "Enterprise" view
they did not understand that you have to be able to code games (graphics) in it before someone will pick it up OR be so easy and click and drag that people use it ala Visual Basic
now sun have tried both of these approachs late on and they failed
SWING is not to bad now only thanks to 2GHz client side machines
the basic Java core is right its the surounding libs that suck so much
SUN are earning money of Java as postioning it for Mobile phones and STB's where it should have gone anyway
what we need is an open classpath (pun I know) and a gcc that can compile it (which people are doing) so its looking good for java and open source
frankly SUN should submit the large bulked up version to EMACA and keep the emmbeded versions and swing and JDBC for itself and save a hell of a alot by not haveing to fund all of this via a profit makeing comapny instead have a java Foundation which is Non profit
god why is this so hard for scott and co to do

if you really wanted to go after this and you had money (like a drug company) then you would use Bonobo's because they are much closer to humans and the the organs are the right size (the primary reason to use pigs is that the organs are the right size )
whatever your postion on this dont think its not going to happen it is (drug companys have to much to gain) lets keep it in the open and monitor it rather than banning it and leting the drug companies move to a nation which will turn a blind eye and selling it on there (to have the op you fly to chad and pay your money then fly back to the country which banned it)
basically the Biological people screwed themselves by allowing patents on genetic sequences and had to get a non profit group do the human genome so that could not be patented lets not allow that to happen in software
frankly patents is going to bite the U.S. in the arse
why because simply put you dont think that there are people out their violating the GPL now ? (e.g. Microsoft may have changed parts of linux kernel and I dont see those changes published )
people clone hardware all the time (company did some Set top Box work did well until it sent a few to east and low and behold clones apear)
frankly all the real development will be done in china and to hell with the WIPO

i presume that this may be read by non-techy people so I repeat what alot of peoplle know that read this page sorry about that but I am trying to convince charitys in the UK to use a cost effective solution and not go wasting their money on PC's and such I would much rather they employ a gardner or handy man to keep propertys in good condition than spend money on upgrading and just use the best solution
yes and you could do it with any modern OS (Microsoft Windows XP, Mac OS X.2 and yes linux ) the cost to a charity would be the decideing factor
I would use Debian debian or Redhat also look for a local Linux User Group (LUG) these people would donate their time and expertise I am sure (-: find UK LUG's here
useing a linux based solution would mean that you may not have to buy any new machines as you could use any that you already have
in terms of presenting information (I presumne thats why you want them networked )
THE best solution is to make a website that as well as you can publish to the world through a website you can also setup Linux box as a kiosk so that you can view nothing else except what you want (just think of the web broser area in full screen ) have a look around www. I am sure they have a solution I just cant remember the link (anyone help out ?)
also remember that DSL or ISDN is a bill every month so you might want a private link to cut costs
also if you have a grant that you can only spend on network I would recomend getting a IR link between the buildings (I have a backup link for the fiber that is between two Uni buildings and no these are not like your IR link on your PC but about 1-2Mbps which is pretty good) I cant remember the people that make it anyone got any good recomendations for IR links ?
hope this helps please contact people in your LUG and when you have a solution up and running let slashdot know !

think not how many PC's but phones
all new phones have Bluetooth
take a long hard look at the semiconductor world and in terms of volume x86 makes up under 1% this year compare this to the ARM and MIPS world which make up your Set Top Box, NIC, and mobile phone
ask yourself how many phones per person ?

p.s. phone booth and of course www
p.p.s. I can actually format URL's cant you ?
bluetooth has always been about low power
this meassn that it can be put into phones
and washing machines, fridges, microwaves and of course keyboards, mice and microphones/speakers
Microsoft next keyboards are to be wireless and bluetooth
bluetooth is about short range low power 802.11b is about high power, long range and high bandwidth
bluetooth is pretty sweet its really the software that holding things back because their are lots of devices now
it terms of volume more bluetooth devices are made each day than 802.11b in a year
(pinch of salt bluetooth sig no. but a good idea about the volume)

they dont get it
as soon as you put something on the web and someone looks at it cacheing happens
cached at the browser depending on the settings and depending on the ISP in their cache servers
Now Ontop of this thanks to UK guv most ISP's have to keep certain data that flow's through the system
so maybe this wont happen maybe it will depending on who you are, where you are and how your doing it
I mean they could net even use their own IP address !

what matters is what running inside is it a shoddy x86 or a nice MIPS/ARM chip

yeah great how about a lib that is for the ARM arch
this is how the windows media gets in most players
then we are talking
Ipod - ARM7 based (with hardware layer 3 MPEG)
rio (new) - ARM7 based
empeg - StrongARM based
talk to cirrus and do a Lib that is ansi c and can be compiled with SDT 2.X and ADS
oh yeah and if it was MIPS based we would have no problems but hey here's wishing (-;
