Oh how I long for the old Microprose Manuals.

    Amen to that , brother!
I remember in the combat section of the original manual for Civilization, they actually told you how the computer was going to calculate whether a unit won or lost a battle. In some of todays manuals you rarely get information on which factors affect combat effectiveness.

    Here's a little something.

    From the article:
As a side note, EA's classic Square/Circle/Triangle corporate logo was devised by Barry Deutsch of Steinhilber Deutsch and Gard design firm . They proposed the three shapes to stand for the "basic alphabet of graphic design," and they rasterized them to connote technology. About a year later, ATT unveiled a similar treatment in their logo.

I went to The Laser Center in Houston, TX to have the LASIK procedure performed. It worked like a charm. I now have 20/15 vision and am never encumbered by those damn glasses. I highly recommend that you get it done.
There is one down side, though. Low light vision does suffer a little after the procedure. To me it seems like there are little halos around every light source.
Good luck to you, what ever you decide.

  5. Engineer's Name (Re:I can) on Engineer in a Box? · · Score: 1

I believe the full title of one who runs a train is "Locomotive Engineer". Locomotive Engineers were so named because they were supposed to know how the locomotive worked so they could run it effectively. While positions like fireman and breakman were in charge of specific components of the train, the locomotive engineer was in charge of the train as a whole. It was his job to ensure that all the components worked together efficiently like a well oil ... er, train. As such, your typical locomotive engineer had extensive domain knowledge, and the application of that knowledge was a (very limited) form of engineering.

My company implemented a furlough program. It's basically 8 days of unpaid vacation. You can take the days anytime throughout the rest of the year, but the pay is deducted evenly throughout the pay periods in this quarter.
It's not altogether a bad deal. The extra days off are nice and all said it's only a 3% paycut when you spread it out over the course of a year. I just worry that a move like this will be followed by something similar (or worse) next quarter.

I have not seen the movie yet (have my tickets for 10p tonight), but do you think that perhaps someone might have been putting a little trace of Fizban into Gandalf?
For those that don't know, Fizban is the doddering old wizard from Dragonlance who was obviously based on Gandalf (albeit loosely). As a matter of fact, it seems as if most wizards in modern fiction share many traits with Gandalf.

  14. Scully was a Bad-Ass! on Scully Leaving X-Files · · Score: 1

I always thought she was a weak character, a real waste of potential.

You're kidding right? Scully kicked ass on numerous occasions. She was rarely not able to hold her own against whatever was menacing the world that particular week. There were times that she was positioned as the victim for plot reasons. Since the show was really centered on Mulder, they had to make him look like a hero every now and then by letting him rescue the person who meant the most to him, his partner.

She's weak in combat, always seeming to get her gun knocked away.

She shot everybody! Hell, she even shot Mulder once. On purpose!

I tend to agree with your analysis of her not being a partner to Mulder. But, only early on. And, this was intentional. She was origionally paired with Mulder to debunk his X-Files conclusions.

As far as the show with new agents is concerned, it may very well end up being a decent show. (I doubt it) Even if it is a fine show, it still will not be the X-Files that some of us have come to know and love. But then, I guess is hasn't for past couple of seasons either. :)

  19. Memory != Intelligence, true, but ... on Are Computers Stealing Your Memory? · · Score: 1

What if, like many replies have said, using your memory less and less causes it to atrophy? I'm not saying it does, but it sounds like a reasonable assumtion to me.
Consider this along with the observation (again, this may or may not be true) that our minds' architecture resembles that of von Neumann architecture where the program exists in the same memory as the data. Then, if the the mind's ability to retain data shrinks to zero, we may still be able to process efficiently (intelligence), but what would all of that processing power be acting upon?
While I generally hold that it is more important to understand how or why something is rather than simply memorizing facts or one-off solutions, I don't think that exercising our powers of memorization every now and then will cause us too much harm.

For example, some of the submitors to /. should probably take the time to memorize the difference between to, too, and two -- then and than -- etc. ;-)
