Really? I would call it a feature. By your logic, I shouldn't pay anything for the military because I am far from the Canadian border and those damn canucks will never get to me. Hence I get no benefit so why should I pay!!
The sad fact is that taxes WORK. They are not perfect but taxes have been around for a while and aren't going anywhere any time soon. Same thing for governments. Just because the implementation is broken doesn't mean the algorithm is useless.
As for the topic, if you don't think that people who work at companies based in NY are getting a benefit FROM NY, you're dead wrong. There is some reason why the company is in NY and not elsewhere. NY may very well have given the company tax incentives to be based in NY. This helped the company in some fashion which then helps the person employed at said company.
i am not saying that NY is correct in this case, just that things are never as one-side as they seem.
revious virtual communities were based around topics that people had in common - look at LiveJournal. But if you read their press releases and look at the clipart - what Yahoo seem to be doing here is starting at a much more personal scale. It's trying to get you, your mom and your real-life friends all reading and sharing blogs.
I disagree. nearly all the people I know who have gotten live journals in the last 3 years did so because a friend had one. I personally didn't join any "topics" until a couple of months ago and I have had an lj account for over 3 years. I was there for friends, not groups.
The extra intergration is going to be nice but frankly I want to intergrate across services. I have a history at lj that I can't lose. i have friends that I need to be able to read effortlessly and who I want to effortlessly be able to read me. When yahoo does that, oh and without ads, then I'll try it. and if I like it then maybe i'll spend money on it. I did with lj.
Thou i have doubts still. My gmail experence is still so much better then my yahoo mail,i could never use yahoo as my primairy email any more. If there are still serious issue (imo) with mail (like load times) i doubt things are going to be excellent on a brand new venture.
It is very reasonable to assume that anyone that could hear anything we have already sent or will send in the next 30 years will be far and away above our current tech level. So the ONLY reason they would be listening is because they want to hear ANYTHING we have to say, like one listens to a child learn to speak.
So as most children do first we talk about ourselves and thats ok.

2) It might not be attractive to you but to some people people really have a had time dealing with people when there is too large of a gap. This can act as a filter. If you take the test you find people like yourself that want to find people like yourself.
3) I believe there are groups that target the 3rd or 4th standard deviation. if that floats your boat, you will find them. Heck, finding the good groups is likely part of the process for entrance.

The next gen of virus should spread by exploiting all of MS lovely holes. Modifing CodeRed to use this exploit would be very tasty. You could have 2 excellent attack methods: attacking by scanning for open IIS servers,once found you could spread to anyone who downloads from the infected server. one downloaded you could either email yourself out or start scanning from the download machine.
There are so many DIFFERNT holes in all of the connected products the virus's life cycle could be spread over many different stages. Let the fun begin! Thank you MS!

No,it might not work every time but it is far too easy for the payoff. #2 could be done either at the machine or using BO2k. Hell, you could write a trojan
that would do all of this automatically.
