why the sad face? Where I live, doctors are simply an interface to their computer. If you cant fix it with pills then it doesn't exist. Doesn't matter what you go there for, they'll check your throat and ears.

As soon as you find a good doctor, chances are everyone else does too and then it becomes impossible to book an appointment because their schedule is always full, and then they invariably leave and go elsewhere...and the medical centre will never disclose where.

Bring back the days of doctors who were allowed to care. Fancy machines cant replace them. They can certainly replace a lot of doctors nowadays though.

Isn't the contents of .docx files tied to the (proprietary, closed, secret, patented) algorithms within MS Word?

For example, you may be able to retrieve the text (not sure) but getting your formatting to look exactly like it did in MS Word, will require MS Word.

If you want proof, find another word processing app that can display it 100% compatible with MS Word without calling any code from MS Word.

Now explain how in 25 years time when most people vaguely remember what MS Word 2010 looked like or did, you will somehow open your .docx documents and have them look as they do now. If I know Microsoft at all, I know that the OOXML "Standard" will change (read: "extend") a LOT in 25 years.

let me point out the amount of FAIL I can see here:

Why on earth would you want to use an iPad to browse the internet if you have a laptop? Tiny screen, no Flash support, no keyboard

When I wanted to sit on my comfy chair on my deck wrapped in a blanket with a coffee in one hand and /. in the other.

Until you want to, you know, scroll down. Which do you put down, the iPad or the coffee?
A netbook would sit comfortably in your lap. coffee in one hand, mouse in the other.

Or when I want to browse while standing for an hour on the train twice a day.

So if you're on a train, one hand is holding onto something for balance, and the other is holding a rather large device to do the same as what most other people are doing on their phones. And guess what, you cant scroll down without either putting your iPad on the floor or risking falling over.

Or when I want to just not carry around a 5lb brick everywhere I go when not working.

You must have big pockets. I wouldn't want to carry anything around that was bigger than my phone. If it doesn't fit in my jeans pocket - it's inconvenient.

Or when I don't want unblockable popups.

nice troll - most browsers block popups these days. You're promoting the lack of flash as a feature, but I'm pretty sure you can disable flash on your netbook if you wanted the same "experience".

... when did it become hip to use crippled devices?

You mean like a motorcycle instead of a car?

Meh, each to their own preference, they appeal to different markets, and most people prefer cars.

You mean like a regular cell phone instead of a smart phone?

The world is moving to smartphones - again, not the direction you were infering.

You mean like a laptop instead of a desktop?

There is nothing about a laptop that makes it inferior to a desktop, except for the keyboard maybe. But it actually gives you MORE than a desktop, in that it is portable. Unless you mean netbook, but then most people dont use those instead of their desktop. They use it when they are away from their desktop.

Many people like to use whatever is appropriate to the task.

This is true. However I suspect many iPad owners try to make the iPad appropriate to ANY task, rather than applying the above (in which case most of them wouldn't need one).

I find a netbook much more appropriate for browsing the web from my couch, or whatever other computing task I might like to do. Unless I go out somewhere, in which case my (android) phone is just fine.

Your examples were all poor. I can certainly see your argument, but I disagree and have provided the flip-side for your amusement :)

Only problem there is I'd be stuck between Android (with better touchscreen support and better mobile suitability) and something like Ubuntu Netbook Remix, where the touchscreen wouldn't work so well...

I dont care what people think of the iPad. I know if I bought one it would just sit there collecting dust. To use it, either one hand has to hold the damn thing or it sits in your lap at an angle that isn't ideal for viewing the screen. My take on it now is the same as when I first saw it. nope. I can run whatever app i choose on the Android market because those requiring a higher API level aren't shown.

Does my phone still work? yep. It works just as good if not better than the day I bought it. Will it be upgraded to 2.1, who knows? But I've still got more apps available than I could ever need, most of these run flawlessly...

If google suddenly pull all Android 1.5/1.6 apps from android market, then maybe you trolls have a point...but until then, Android 1.6 makes a perfectly fine OS for a phone that is now available free on the minimum plan on most carriers here.

The number of android phones doesn't make a scrap of difference either. As a developer, you target the API level, not the device. If an app appears to work on some phones and not others, either your app has bugs or the phone does. not android. (android could have bugs but if this were the case your app would fail on ALL phones and wouldn't even work in the emulator)
