We wouldn't have the tremendous diversity where everyone could build their own pc and it will just 'work'. So you're telling me that your sister can actually build her own PC and it will just work? Amazing. Or by "everyone" did you mean geeks who don't mind reading forums at 2 am to figure out which hacked driver they need for their no-name network card?
Amen to that brother. MS has conditioned their users that a little bit of downtime, suffering and reinstalling the OS is a perfectly normal way to use a computer. Multiply that "a little bit" by the billions of Windows machines out there, and what you get are clueless, inefficient users whose machines are only good for sending out spam.
But this is all really OK, because apparently suffering is a normal part of PC use. And they talk about Jobs' reality distortion field...
Waaaaait a fucking second there. A guy called JarJarJedi comes to slashdot and bitches about Apple and "Linix", while at the same time glorifying Microsoft's product which he thinks is as good as should be expected, while at the same time he looks at those (Win) computers and sees how often they crash, how virus prone they are and he gets a +4 insightful?
WTF mods? Asleep at the wheel?
On the offchance that I am wrong, I would then like to say Issa for onessa welcomessa our bizarro-worldssa overlordssa!
And, to stay on the topic, I think tech help "hates" MS because we get stuck fixing their mistakes on our weekends, afterhours and so on. All while the bosses are superhappy about getting the next round of MS licenses for cheap, and delegating the problems to the tech help. This of course leaves nothing for tech help to do but to constantly put out fires while listening to bitchy users. Sure, script kiddies and CS players of east europe LOOOOVE their microsoft, but they don't have to support 100s of bitchy users whose machines are running slow, because microsoft decided to leave the OS completely vulnerable to spyware.
But I rant. I work for a large Mac shop, so I no longer have the headache of microsoft, and my days are filled with planning for future and improving the network, as opposed to putting out fires. But my hatred for MS is still strong from my previous jobs, and fixing relatives' PCs. Luckily I've got them all switched to Macs, so I no longer spend my holidays cleaning the crap off their machines:) Thank you OS X:)
And oh yeah, lest I forget, Ballmer is a cretin, and I can't get the image of him squirting on the stage, yelling "developers, developers, developers."
you're right' but the fact remains that ms just got paid for both xp and vista. they could care less about what you run. i'm sure you've go techies that deal with ms's shortcomings personally.
os X team probably develops on os X machines. so they're not wasting time waiting on the OS to unfreeze while searching, emptying recycle bin, or clicking through 3 different verification boxes when trying to delete files. Think about it this way, if every MS developer wastes 20 seconds a day due to poor HD fragmenting, useless HD search mechanism, clicking on dialogs, switching between different IE windows, as opposed to tabs, or filtering irellevant WindowsLive search results that adds up to a lot of wasted time when multiplied by however many hundreds or thousands of people they have working on it. (say 1000, 20*1000 = 5.5 hours/day, so they're basically paying someone to just wait for the OS to catch up to the user while the rest of the company works.)
And all that waste is simply because of the inefficiency and unfriendliness of their own system/platform.
Ever try explaining the benefits of virtual desktops to a person who doesn't even think a tabbed browser is needed? That's one of the previous Unix admins I worked with. He was so clueless about his boxes that every week he'd say "I just wish I had windows servers instead."
Why can't they still sell PCs without OS?

I'm aware of their old contracts, but are they still in effect? Can't they be renegotiated? I'm surprised that Dell, Gateway and HP would still be taking it up the rear. Ubuntu is a good enough system for a lot of homes that only need to do email, web, and type grade and high school papers. Why would they still be subject to such ridiculous terms, especially after MS has been convicted of abusing their monopoly status?
What I don't understand, is what exactly they would pump millions into? The marketing? R&D? A little too late for either of these if the product establishes itself as "worthless". If noone is buying it, what exactly can MS pump money into? Services that nobody is using? Overstocking the stores with something nobody is buying? What kind of long-term strategy is that? Develop a crappy product that even the reviewers hate then pour money down the drain?
I saw one of them at the local Wally world. The pictures on the display case were all sideways, since the models were set up upright. What kind of display genius at MS thought that would be a good way to show it off?
I know, if I was to say that i've got the Urge, and I'd like to squirt you the picture of my kids, I'd prolly get arrested. But if he says it, MSFT shares jump up 7.5%.
Sure, It's nice to know that they still use the firmware heavily restricted optical drives. (For those of us who are regular Mac users, and still want to regularly watch multiregion DVDs.)
They're just prepairing for the next presidential election when Cheney miraculously pulls another victory for them. So, just in case people get up in arms over it, they'll have the law on their side. (Though I doubt that they'd need it, Cheney is a crack shot himself, I hear.)
The flashlight plugin basically looks very much like the spotlight search. It basically takes *much* less screen real estate as the default interface "primer".
Thanks for the MacBreak, I wasn't aware of it. Leo Laporte is great!
i'm with you. I got a miglia TV micro, and it's just waiting for the iTV.

Honestly, what strange part of his brain thinks that even SOUNDS right?
The big, sweaty part that keeps yelling at the little part that only wants to read a book.
I take it upon myself to answer on behalf of the slashdot collective:
It depends if it has more space than Nomad or not.
Too much Sinaed O'Connor....
My sysadmin side says, you're absolutely right, of course, but my marketing side says I've no idea what you're talking about? Works?
I thought one couldn't tinker with MACS?
