  2. Re:Benchmarks, accuracy, and choice on Ars Technica Reviews Intel iMacs · · Score: 1

I think what Steve said is accurate in its context, but their advertising is very misleading. The 2x and 4x are taken out of their context and applied to broader terms of overall performance. They do not mention that 2x and 4x are related to specific benchmarks which do not directly translate to performance.

This is similar to MS claiming, in their install screens, that Windows XP will allow you to be more efficient, and that it is faster and more secure.
They don't say what it is faster and more secure than. (Except "more than ever".)

Those stats are taken out of their context and are misleading.

Now, who can correctly classify me?
I love PowerPC macs for their Firewire support (Booting, integration, etc.) and the multimedia capabilities of PowerPC.
A quad G5 will be quite a beast for quite some time, in multimedia circles, I believe.

well, first of all, congrats on your story submission earlier today.

OK, so you didn't recognize Garage Band or Spotlight. Garage band allows amateur musicians and their fellow bandmates to plug in their instruments, play, sing and mix their own promo CDs for example. So if your passion is music, Apple has given you a way to realize your potential.
MS on the other hand gives you the "Sound Recorder!!!" whooptie-do

Spotlight is an awesome search mechanism. MS's search can't compare to it, and I don't feel comfortable installing google's search right on my desktop (though they are kings of search).

What has MS released to help users reach their potential? XP SP2? 39 Crit updates? Firewall? Movie Maker? The laughing stock of the neighborhood..
Though I admit this is overly generalized and has exceptions, but it seems that in MS world you can only reach your potential if you aspire to be a leet secretary or an accountant.

Heck even Linux lets you run a web server without worrying about its security every two weeks.

And X-Box, as someone has pointed out is a media center only if illegally modded.
X-Box 2 is one, once you consider buying the non-core version and the HD-DVD add-on drive.
One can buy a TIVO for half that price.

In his own words he has eliminated spam, brought speech and handwriting recognition to everyday computing, and has a solid foothold in our livingroom with their useful windows media center PCs.

Apple on the other hand just keeps releasing products that we can do nothing else with but use them...
OS X, Garage Band, iTunes, Spotlight...

What is the purpose of dual booting? In my college days, sure I had 5 OSs booting off the same drive, but that had nothing to do with needing to get work done.
OS X is superior for Web surfing, Document creation, Multimedia and personal file and web serving.
Now I know that there are legitimate uses for Windows (CAD, games, etc) but why would you want to dual boot? A cheap windows machine can be made by your local shop for 400 bucks.

Get a KVM switch and you've got two dedicated machines you can use at the same time.
