My Wii isn't on the internet and has never wanted to update. All the games have worked from the shop without wanting to update anything, including Wii Fit and Mario Kart.
My Vista install was for 3 months and was SP 1 after they had a chance to fix things. My Win 7 install has been for 6 months and was better than Vista straight away.
It is also better than XP by a mile, and plays Fallout 3, which Ubuntu doesn't.
So, at least for me, my preference for Windows 7 is based on real reasons.

They won't ever release it all for $20. Sims 2 still costs over $300 to get all the expansions.
I own a laptop with windows to play Fallout 3, Civ 4, etc. Until Linux is Windows, I have no use for it.
