  1. Which box to get... on Panasonic 'Q' First Look · · Score: 1

Which console you should get is a tough decision for some people. The PS2 is already a year old, but it is still the most popular one out there. Don't let people convince you that it is superior on account of the vast amount of games for it, they always count the old PS1 games. If you want to go just by the current number of games, go for the Dreamcast, but if you want to go for the promise of more good games coming in the future, then the PS2 and the XBOX are your options.

The GameCube is cute, and it has four controller slots and its games will never be pirated because they are delightfully proprietary. Do not let the cuteness sway you, it's just not very good. The controller is too small (and lacks the necessary critical mass of buttons), and the graphics are comparable to early PS2 games, and are easily overshadowed by newer games like GTA3, Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Madden 2002.

If you plan to be playing by yourself a lot, then the PlayStation is an excellent option, because of its excellent single player games (GTA3 & MGS2). Now that the developers have grown accustomed to the PS2, the games are getting awesome.

But if you don't want to be a total bitch, you might consider the XBOX. It does have 4 controller ports, and its controllers are large enough for a man to use, but not too big for a small child. This is a good system for multiplayer as well as single player, and even games that you would expect to be single-player (like Halo) can be played with multiple people. The graphics of the XBOX launch games are better than any other launch, and the cream of the XBOX crop just barely squeak past the cream of the PS2 (GTA3 & MGS2).

Now, I have all three systems, and I find myself using the XBOX the most. The controller is the most comfortable, and the games are the best. The GameCube pisses me off, I just let the little kids use that one. The PS2 is best for Madden and Tiger Woods, but also for its best games (GTA3 & MGS2). But the controller is very thumb intensive, which makes it rather difficult to use with a broken thumb as compared to the XBOX (as I have recently learned, damn it).

And if you are looking for a DVD player, the XBOX is on a level with most commercial DVD players (I also have a high end Sony DVD player for the other TV), once you buy the A/V kit for S-video and digital audio. The PS2 is a shitty DVD player, basically DVD is a bonus feature on a through-and-through gaming system, it's not make-or-break. If you want DVD, go XBOX or go for a specific player.

All in all, in my opinion, go XBOX: it's the best one on the market now, and probably for the foreseeable future.

If by "one" you mean the XBOX, then you are either a liar or an idiot. I purchased an XBOX and have not yet turned it off, indeed I have hardly stopped playing it (that includes 18 straight hours of Halo, during which I beat the game), and it has yet to overheat. In fact, the box itself is not uncomfortably cool (although it is noticeably warm to the touch), but the gameplay does not slow down. Only someone with 17 fans on their Athlon would think the XBOX overheats. Perhaps you editors should only post what you know, rather than whatever might make people think that Microsoft looks bad. Your propaganda battle is pointless, because you're preaching to the choir, who largely don't matter.

It is a wholly new operating system and Apple made it an update disk because they didn't want their software labeled as a whole new OS, because people would criticize them for being too much like MS. Don't criticize Apple, they're trying to keep themselves in good light, and you're deliberately trying to shame them because you don't know as much about Darwin as you know about kernel32.dll and your windows s'. I have an old laptop. When I say old, I mean really, really old. It's a Pentium-233, with 96 megs of RAM. That's basically the minimum requirements to even run Windows XP, but I still wanted to get rid of Windows 95 which it had been running. So I picked up a free copy of XP from the office and installed it. It installed quickly and easily, and the first bootup was quicker than expected. After turning off the new gui (blue & green taskbar?? Are you kidding?), it ran quite quickly. There is no slowdown compared to Win95, in fact in many situations it seems to be considerably faster than 95 on this machine. Bear in mind, of course, that this is the bare minimum processor and just above the minimum RAM, and there is a considerably performance increase over Windows 95. Amazing.

I think we should all applaud Microsoft. Say what you will about them, but they still manage to release a huge new update to their OS at least once a year (how old are Win2k and Me? And now XP is already out), and every one is better than the last. XP is definitely worth the upgrade, even if you only have the bare minimum.

On a personal note, as I write this I'm running a Big-O test on one of my programs, and the OS dynamically allocates processor time to the program on the fly, and there are no performance hits to the real-time programs. Glancing at the task-manager shows that the profiled program is always taking up 86-95% of the processor, but nothing seems slower than it normally does. Incredible.

  20. Re:Artificial Gravity? on Expert: Mars Astronauts Would Lose Teeth · · Score: 2, Insightful

The Mars Society has already thought of this. You are correct when you assume that you need a ridiculously large vessel to make this feasible. But, the way the Mars Society theorists got around the issue is to separate the craft into two parts separated by a teflon tether, of a sort. The first part of the craft would be larger and contain everything the astronauts would need on the voyage to Mars. The second part would be considerably smaller but nearly equivalent in weight (space for living astronauts is considerable). The two parts would then be spun around each other with initial and occasional blasts from small, dedicated retro rockets.

The problem is, in order to simulate 1G of gravity (equal to that on Earth), you need a certain mixture of size and speed. For safety reasons, the tether can only be so long. So you would think they could just increase the speed. It works on paper, but when put into practice with such a small vessel, spinning at that speed would most likely just induce vertigo in the astronauts and the small size of the craft would allow small variations in the rotation to create noticeable rocking, much like a ship at sea. Luckily, there is an easy solution to this problem. Just simulate the gravity on Mars. Spinning at a reasonable speed, the craft would be able to simulate the necessary 0.38G safely and easily. And then there's less of a problem on both landings (Mars and Earth), because even if you were able to simulate full Earth gravity, would you really want to? When you land on Mars, some considerable amount of time would have to be devoted to getting acclimated to the gravity, during which time the astronauts would not be fully operational and not exactly able to do the required exploration work. With a gravity of 0.38G on the transporting spacecraft, that acclimation can be done over the 6 month travel period and the astronauts can hop out and get their work done immediately after landing.

These five months not only lacked broadband service, but they continued to extract a monthly charge despite my numerous angry exchanges with the technical support and the sales staff. I finally paid the fellows at the local station a less-than-friendly visit and made brutally clear to them how I felt about the whole affair. Needless to say, the matter was sorted out quickly and easily in my presence, and since I have enjoyed virtually constant DSL service from the good folks at Qwest (unfortunately, however, I am getting 30% or less of my allotted downstream bandwidth, a very disappointing circumstance considering my ever-increasing home networking situation). Although, the good folks at Qwest are not so reasonable. That is to say they are about as reasonable as they are competent. In spite of the fact that I had exactly zero service for a period of no less than five months, and had continued to be charged the hefty sum of $30 a month throughout, Qwest refused and continues to refuse a refund of any kind, much less the full deserved amount lost of approx. $150, if I have done that math correctly (and I think it is unquestionable that I have).

All in all, I wouldn't expect any money back or the minor infraction caused by Code Red. It barely affected the modem itself, and it took about two seconds to make the modem completely invulnerable to such an attack again, even before consulting the Qwest support page or people.
