  1. Number of windows proportional to amount of monito on How Many Windows? · · Score: 1

I have 9 windows open right now, if you count my adium buddy list. 5 Firefox, each with 4-8 tabs, adium buddy list, and two finder windows left over from reorganizing my bit torrent DL folder last night. Usually in addition to that I have my azerus client open, a chat window open, and the VLC control box + paused video. Maybe iTunes. I'd probably have other crap open like calculator, 2-3 terminal windows, cpu monitor & image capture running in the background if my other monitor wasn't plugged in to my ubuntu box at the moment.

The idea that a utility company - who deals with technology (water, electricity, sewer, telephone) that hasn't seen drastic change in the way their utility is delivered in decades - or centuries = is going to update their infrastructure in only 20 years, is fucking crazy. It took us thousands of years to upgrade from lead to copper pipes, and another couple hundred to upgrade to (mostly) toxin-free PVC. Dial up was our lead pipes, DSL our copper pipes (pun intended), and Fiber Optic will be our holy grail - so if it takes 30-40 years before it's rolled out completely, that's a fucking great rate of speed for the archaic utility industry.

Well a 120mm fan does about 112cfm. This ionic breeze jobby is about 3x the height, and 1x the width, so it's plausable that it could do 3x the cfm. Unfortunately the way computer cases are designed is that 66% of the airflow is blocked by the disc drive and hard drives, with a tiny inlet (usually 80x80mm) at the bottom for the rest of the case. The apple G5 sorta gets around that by moving the drives to the back and putting 4-5 ~60mm fans on the front (some zelot will correct me with the exact specifics), which combined, probably do about 325cfm, too.

So yeah, his system does 325cfm, but only maybe half of that is making it in to the interior of the case at a velocity worth cooling anything. Still pretty genius.

The only time it becomes an issue is when I hook my laptop up to the TV, and the words are a little blurry @ 800x600 and font 12. I've seen an HDTV demo, and I can tell you now, the quality increase wasn't worth the purchase of the additional infrastructure ($1200 for TV, $500 for HD-DVD, $45 for an HDMI cable, $200 for a reciever that accepted optical audio in, another $24 for an optical cable... almost $2000 after taxes) for what is maybe 20% better image quality (judging by the layman's eye) than is currently avalible? No thanks.

When HD-DVD players cost $150 (mine will probably come in the form of a PS3 in 2-3 years), and you can buy a 1080p TV for under $500, I'll consider it. That'll be around 2010, I'd guess.

I'm glad someone pointed this out. This has been known since the 30's, and many psychologists in their field will agree with this. Most people can handle their addictions on their own, discreetely, and without affecting others so long as it is cheap. Most narcotics, including Heroin, do no irriversible damage to the body that isn't comparable to smoking. Meth is another story though. It is when the addictive substance is restricted, the supply shrinks, and the price skyrockets, causeing people to turn to petty crime to feed addiction.

The price of a pack of cigarettes in NY is about $9. People are arrested for smuggling cigarettes in to NY and selling them tax free at around $3 a pack. Is it really worth it to belittle the smokers who are buying contraband cigarettes? Is it worth throwing people in jail for smoking cigarettes? Would the crime rate increase ever so slightly if we completely outlawed cigarettes? More than likely, as people would need their fix of $50/pack/day of cigarettes. Drug prohibition causes more problems than it will ever solve, because the prohibition is ultimately what caused the problem... I've never heard of reports of housewives going on killing sprees after drinking their cocaine laced tonic, just as I've never heard of someone jumping off a building from smoking pot or snorting coke.

The fact that the DS has sold 20 million units since it's release is incredibly impressive, particularly since it's both a handheld console, and also that it's competing with two other gameboy products on the market (GBA SP and GBA Micro).
