so um.... they're gonna scan/digitize it all, right? having a hard copy is nice and all, but i'd rather see all of these volumes of sci fi gone to the knife, and scanned in, at say, 600 dpi, and then OCR'd.
from what it sounds like in the article, they're going to catolouge this and stick it on a shelf for people to read... like the article mentions, pulp fiction sci fi was meant to be thrown away...those books will only last a few precious years of handling before they're lost forever.
i've seen a few book digitizing devices, but i've never seen them in wide use at libraries....does the library of congress digitize their library? is there anyway to access/query it? a book only lasts forever, as does a digital copy and the means to read the digital copy, but an obscure dusty book on a dusty shelf out of reach halfway across the country from me isn't going to help me much on my college thesis (or 10,000 other people who might need to access exerpts of the book for some reason or another)
once you get the math worked out, the most expensive part won't be the used (stolen) dish network sattelite dishes, but the 20 or so erector sets you'll have to buy to turn them all at the same time for tracking....who uses C band besides that widely-pirated sattelite TV thing they had going in the late 70's/early 80's?
i always wonder why m$ didn't just give away 10,000 xboxes. there was so much free hype and press about it, it would have helped considerably. as it is nobody wants to buy one (still) because there aren't that many people who have friends who have one, or if they do they think they're idiots for wasting that much $$$ on a silly xbox.
i wouldn't be suprised if that happens here on slashdot. everytime there's a particularly nasty slashdot story about microsoft, there's one or two really well informed, positive, almost unnatural, posts for microsoft's latest DRM or whatever idea. i wouldn't be suprised if nvidia and ati have 2 or 3 people apiece who troll the overclocker forums and whatnot.
aren't misqutoes attracted to the co2 produced by humans? wouldn't a block of dry ice, and a nice, warm bloody steak next to it, about 30 feet from where you're sitting/area of activity be the best solution?
how about we put somthing a bit more pressing, and useful, as a requirement out there first....say, RCA jacks. i have no idea now many TV's i've had to hook up for friends, friends of the family, and cousins, because their tv only had coax in the back, and their playstation/xbox/whatever only had RCA. let's start selling some useful tv's here, walmart. ugh.
what else would you eat your hat for? is it of the fadora (indiana jones) style? or more of a baseball cap? how much for the video? or will you be auctioning it off on ebay?
neat. so i'm guessing these are directional microphones, in a semicircle, pointed twords the launch pad. sounds like you could build your own "lightning dectector" with an old 486, and a couple of ISA sound cards... just run a script waiting for an abnormality in the TV/FM tuner in the box, and then start recording... could be an interesting project.
yeah but say you get a 8mb compact flash card, which is plenty big for 95% of the uses you're going to have for it. those are about $12 a piece. add in the fact that you're only going to use it for booting occasionally, and you're set. you wouldn't even need to remove it; it could be part of the motherboard, negating the need for removeable storage altogether.
change preferences, close all finer windows, log out, log back in. problem solved.some of my folders have orange backgrounds, some have blue backgrounds, because that's how i color code some things. try looking up your problem on the net; you're bound to find a solution or two there
not much effect on the moon or earth.... but what about the hundreds of communication sattelites + ISS? i wouldn't be suprised to see more than a few sattelites thrown out of whack due to a 2 km asteroid (turned meteroite)
i'm curious as to what the mission failure rate is of somthing like, say, the army. who exactly did we capture when we invaded afghanastan? i'm sure NASA's failure rate is = the army's in that respect. especially when it comes to casualties
if i recall correctly, there was alot of debate as to wether or not they should send galelio to europa, as it contained a nuclear power plant... did voyager 1 and 2 have the same environmentalists bitching and moaning? also, voyager 1 and 2 should continue operating till 2020 if all goes well; assuming galeleio survives, how long is it's reactor good for?
3) Add as many fans as you can...and point them all blowing out of the case to try and reduce the pressure inside.
why? does it help with the extreme humidity or somthihng?
5) If you have a metal bottom in the trunk, you can use it as a heat sink. Just get a metal case and bolt it on there with some thermal paste between the joints. That metal will get fairly cool if you're going along at 70mph.doesn't that introduce just a horrendous amount of vibration into the system? or do you uber-shock mount the hard drive?
i guess your system is working if you have the experience to give advice on it. do you use it primarily for mp3 playing?
i for one wouldn't miss all those 100 different sizes of cyindrillical AC/DC adaptors for my various devices like hubs... the 6 pin firewire connection (while larger) would be convenient, even if you had to use a more expensive multi-voltage adaptor
hmm, what kind of script are you using to FP? the link wasn't fixed until at least 3 min after the story posted...
once you guys figure out how to link...or somthing...anywho, SECOND POST
the kubric collection DVDs are like this also
if by "preserve" they mean "digitize" for public consumption, then count me in

so negotiate $10 a month off
i was wondering when someone would put a .13 micron 386 in a PDA...

you can still buy win98 at comp usa for $200. used to be able to buy win95 there for ~$120, too.
i managed to burn a (bootable) PC iso of mandrake linux using disk copy. no problem. you may want to try with another iso.

yeah but i doubt you have half the miles the pioneer does, even if they ARE all highway miles :)
wouldn't mind a VW myself. fun cars, those VW's.

intersting fact you're probably aready aware of, but -40c and -40f are equal.
so do ford or chevy trucks work better in the extreme cold? or does everyone use synthetic oil/block heaters so it doesn't really matter?
