  1. Re:unbelievable on Videogames Attract More Women Than Boys? · · Score: 1

I think this thinking is a matter of perspective. Terminator/ Conan had a mostly naked unrealistically beefy CA Gov. as the hero buy I always thought it was aimed at men.

When men see a musclebound male hero it makes sense to them but don't understand why a woman would want to see a tweaked woman hero. I think its because we don't expect women to see the female in the same way we do.

For women who thought Conan was sexy, perhaps they might wonder why all these boys like to see it?

Of course, my gf liked lara's big boobs too so perhaps I am totally off...

  2. A little business math on More Info on Phantom Game Console · · Score: 1

If this costs $400 plus $120/ year and you figure a 2 year life cycle, plus say 3 premium games/ year at (say) $10 each, thats $700 over two years.

I buy games at around $50 (or less) so that means 14 games on a normal PC. I presume that the buyers would have a PC as well (or you would have to figure the broadband costs into this as well)

Maybe I am out of the loop, but 14 games seems like a lot of games to purchase over 2 years and actually play for enough time to make worth it. Most of my games I buy a year out for $30 making it even less worth it to buy this system.

Of course, you don't have to pay to upgrade your PC to a r33t game machine...

I am familiar with Boost. It may handle the specific example of strings that I give but not the general case that I am trying to describe. STL also offers some generic programming tools.

For instance, I used the method to implement 3D graphics matrix math to reduce multiplication count by using templates to exploit special cases.

  5. Closures with tamplates on C++ Templates: The Complete Guide · · Score: 2, Interesting

I rarely see this in template discussions but the thing I love about templates is the ability to do template "closures" for lazy evaluation whereby instead of returning the result of a function, you return an object which represents the application of the function to those arguements. This object then gets cast into the final resultant object.

    Why?

Lets say you are concatenating a bunch of strings. Normally, you would create the concatenation of two strings, then concatenate the third, etc. Depending upon your string implementation, you could reallocate the string results many times.

However, with template closures, the concatenation would return an object which pointed to the two objects that were to be concatenated. Then the second concatenation would point to that object plus the next string. When the entire object was finally actualized by, say, setting it to a variable or as a function argument, then it would create the final string. It could then gather the lengths of all the strings, create a single result string, and then copy everything into it.

And it wouldn't look any more complicated than:

    string a = b + c + d + e;

or whatever and it would still be optimally efficient.

The big downside is that error messages are all but useless.

How much hydrogen would a solar array the size of a modern gas station produce? Figure that the array was 10k sq ft, there was sunlight 50% of the time to varying degrees, etc. Perhaps, if you just consider more southern, sunnier areas.

I stayed at a resort in the bahamas that was powered by a 100Kw solar array that cost $100k total and consisted of 5-8? 8x8 panels. It would seem that would produce a fair amount of power and it was much smaller then 10k sq ft.

This is an argument for freeing music if I ever saw one. The biggest complaint with online music seemed to be that the "artist" never saw the money- but it doesn't look like they do anyway. Why not simply acknowledge that the times have changed, technology has changed and that things aren't what they once were. Musicians can make a living from performances and the love of the job.
