It seems to me that this company is guilty of nothing more than being a non-Western financial institution. Therefore as something alien it is threatening and must be shut down.

The White House release says al-Qaida used their services. Well of course they have, the firm has locations through out the Islamic world. al-Qaida has used plenty of Western banks like Britain's Barclays as well. I don't see much happening to them.

I'm sure the officials who decided to shut down the company don't think of themselves as racist. But the thought of shutting down a Western bank wouldn't even occur to them, especially if it was the largest employer in its country.

I would say that your view is rather one-sided too. Palestinians are not blameless, but lets face it, they react to a situation they are put in by Israel. How would you feel living in a refugee camp without a nation of your own? How willing would you and your neighbours be to negotiate with an occupier who violates international law, demolishes your homes and cries victim at the inevitable backlash?

This is not a struggle between equals. It is up to Israel to change the situation, i.e evict all settlers from Palestinan land, withdraw all troops, and offer a few East Jerusalem neighbourhoods as a capital. Then fortify the border and don't let any Palestinians in. This will mean forgoing the exploitation of cheap Palestinian labor, but hey, get over it.

The ball will then be in the P.L.O's court. They will have to satisfy the aspirations of their people without having anyone to blame.

  14. 5 million rows + MySQL? Very Bad on Gartner Group Suggests Dumping IIS For Now · · Score: 1

Don't want to start a db flame war, but come on, you've read about Tim Perdue's experiment at Sourceforge.

MySQL is convenient but thats about it. Otherwise its just a speedy SQL frontend to the filesystem.

PostgreSQL on the other hand is a real, bad-ass, ACID-compliant mother that is almost ready to go toe to toe with Oracle.

  18. Deja Vu? on AOL 6.0 Bundled with Windows XP? · · Score: 1
Using Netscape as a pawn has worked well for AOL in the past. Remember Win95?
AOL got a place on that desktop in exchange for not using Netscape. And that was back
    when Netscape, was independent.

Fast forward to present day. AOL's purchase of Netscape has been worth it just for the
leverage it gives them against Microsoft.

Is that the only reason for keeping Netscape around though? No. AOL has been slowly
acquiring all the tools for dominating the user experience. Lets go through the checklist.

    - Web browsing: Netscape

    - Media: Winamp, Spinner

    - IM: ICQ (bought essentially so they could let it stagnate while they pumped up AIM)

    - Content: Time-Warner

Eventually they will declare all out war on Microsoft. Until that comes together, they play for time
    with tactics like this agreement.

Why do you think they made a version of AOL for Linux? What Linux user is going to use
AOL for crying out loud? Approach it from another angle though, and it makes sense.
A prepackage pre-installed AOL on Linux on a commodity PC would, in effect,
be a Internet appliance for the masses.

Problem solved. Mandrake has everything including the kitchen sink, but its not going to dump everything on you during a recommended install. If you are a power user, then do the extra work and choose the packages yourself.
