True, but spending $700 on chairs when perfectly acceptable ones can be had for a fraction of that price

Perfectly acceptable chairs can NOT be had for a fraction of the price. Most 'acceptable' office chairs cost about $500+, so while $700 is a bit high it's not a huge difference from $500. Also, quite a few companies lease their office equipment instead of buying it, so the monthly price difference really isn't that much.

Those $50-200 chairs at Office Depot or where-ever ARE NOT acceptable. I have yet to find even one of those chairs that has a back that tilts seperately from the chair seat. If the back and seat tilt at the same time the seat lifts up your legs and cuts off the circulation, this is VERY uncomfortable. Also, the quality of most of those chairs is very lacking, most are very flimsy self-assembled chairs.

If you want a good quality, semi-ergonomic, pre-assembled chair you're going to be paying $300-400+.

There's a chair shop around here that ONLY sells chairs, the cheapest chair they had cost about as much as the Aeron and their most expensive was about $1200, none looked anywhere near as nice as the Aeron and the cheap ones were lacking many of the features. I personally haven't sat in an Aeron but most every review I've seen of the chair says it's very very comfortable.

  21. Harman Kardon or Onkyo and Infinity on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 1

Definately go with a Harman Kardon or Onkyo reciever. Both make a model around $500 that has two AC3 (optical) inputs and 3-4 video inputs (svideo and rca). Both are also high current amplifiers meaning they put out very nice full spectrum sound, they'll pump more bass through your front, rear and center channel than normal recievers. The HK sounds a little better and looks nicer IMO but the Onkyo has more features.

As for the speakers I'd go with (and have gone with :) the Infinity IL series (IL30's for the front, IL10's for the rear, IL25 for the center). With one of the recievers above the sub isn't really necessary if you're living in apartments. If not go with the Entrasub. Total cost for this setup will be about $1750 total without the sub and about $2050 with. A little more than you were thinking of spending but well worth it.

Prices broken down (assuming you find a good internet deal, which shouldn't be hard):

    $500 for the reciever
    $600 for the front speakers
    $400 for the rear
    $250 for the center
    $300 for the sub

This is the exact setup I've got in my apartment (except I use the old Reference series of Inifinity, IL wasn't out yet) and it sounds awesome.

if an interviewer asks you your marital status in an interview tell him/her to suck it, it has no basis for why you're there, and is illegal to ask/consider.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but it still happens. Besides, I was speaking of promotions of current employees. In that case the manager is likely to know at least the simple details of his underlings lives (such as wether or not they're married). Normally they wouldn't say anything about that affecting their decisions but it does. When I was 18 I was billing at $90/hour for Unix work and $60/hour for standard tech work. I was the only one in our shop of 4 or 5 that could do Unix consulting yet I was paid $6.50/h while the rest of the shop got around $9.25/h. When I asked for a raise I was told that I didn't need the money, I wasn't married and didn't have a family, and besides, I was 18 (the same age as their son). Still illegal but it happens.

Needless to say I didn't stick around that shop too long after that. :)

  24. Re: Speaking as a Black Man... on Racism At Microsoft? · · Score: 3

It seems the general consensus among white, male tech workers is that they belong in the industry. If they are up for a promotion against an equally skilled minority, of COURSE they should get the promotion, because they're automatically more skilled. Because the majority of tech managers are ALSO white, this attitude is perpetuated.

This comment is just as racist as the attitude you're trying to portray. Any generalization about a race is racist. (Well except maybe "All white people or white." etc. :) As someone else mentioned, the attitude generally is 'I'm the best there is.' not 'I'm better than all those [insert race here] people.' Arrogance is indeed rampant in this industry (and in most knowledge based industries).

I don't deny that racism exists in this industry, it exists in EVERY industry to some degree. Guess what, racism (in general) will probably never completely go away. Someone will always find a reason to hate another group of people (be it race, country or what-not). I do believe people that are more commonly victims of racism have a tendancy to become overly sensitive though.

If you're competing for a job with 5 other white people and you feel you're the best one for the job and you don't get it would your first assumption be that you didn't get the job because you're black? Perphaps your own perceptions of your skills and the skills of other is skewed (it usually is, even mine I'm sure). Perhaps you didn't get the job because the other guy was married and had kids and you were single so he needed the job more (I've been on the shit end of the stick on that one). My point is, racism is only one of a large number of reasons why you could be passed over for a promotion that you think you should've gotten.
