To me the fundamentals we need to be teaching are how to first design a program independent of the language, then be able to use any language to implement it. People need to understand that programming isn't coding.
If you can't be replaced, then you can't be promoted. Do you really want to be maintaining the same program for the rest of your life? And do you want to have a reference that says 'no one can understand this guy's code' when you leave for the next job?
Or for people who don't care about being promoted above coder level... If you don't write good code that other people can work with, you will never be moved to new projects. If you want to live in maintenance mode that is one thing but personally I want my code to reflect my skills so I can work on bigger and better projects.
What is the point when they charge extra for a recycle bin which I would possibly recycle one grocery bag a week with? Thought it might be different in Michigan compared to the rest of the country since we have 10 cent deposit on bottles so those don't go in the regular recycling.
All that really matters is windows doesn't turn into an always online programs. I wont buy any of those (except for a couple MMOs I like) because I still want to be able use my programs when my network is unavailable or not working fully.
Then your understanding is wrong. As per Gabe Aul, you own it.
The "one year" thing is to push people into upgrading sooner rather than later. If you upgrade within the first year, Windows 10 is free for the life of the device (and that includes reinstalls; so long as you have a Microsoft account and your Windows user is connected to that account, you can reinstall on that device to your heart's content.
If you delay in upgrading past that one year mark, you need to go buy a copy.
Hopefully they release SP1 within that first year.
Hmm, interesting. I have paid a debit or credit card fee, never? I just pay things when my statement comes and go without if I don't have money. Not sure how I'm paying for regulation there.

What pray tell is the problem with it? Obesity and diabetes? I drank 2 mountain dew 20 ounces a day for a while in college and still drink a pop at least every other day (never diet, artificial sweeteners give me a headache) yet my current BMI is 21 and my blood sugar is fine. In fact when I was drinking the most pop in college my BMI was more like 17.
What made me fatter (or some people would call less skinny) was chicken nuggets and milk shakes I ate after I graduated, soda had no impact on my weight.
I can't find it but I remember a story of a woman who was sued for leaving the radio on for her cows to listen to or something like that. So apparently RIAA believes they control your private property too.
I eat US shit food. My wife cooks about four nights a week which provides leftovers, the rest of the week is typically fast food and most of my snacks are sugary packaged food. The result is I'm 5'9" and weight 145 pounds. Of course I lift weights and hit the exercise bike at least once a week (preferably two to three times), I walk the dog at least three or four days a week and try to jog to in from the parking lot to work rather than walking (with two laptops on my back). Maybe I just burn calories faster than the normal person but I think it is more about putting in the effort.
The problem isn't necessarily the schools (though they could improve) but the perception a lot of people come away with. Tests in schools are a way for the school to measure your learning but too many students consider their grades to be an indication of what they actually learned. I went to a school that was very project heavy and while I did good on tests, what I learned was how to take a topic I'd never worked with and develop working programs in a short period of time. True I now realize I could have learned everything on my own (and am doing so after graduation) but a lot of companies like that graduate school education on my resume...
I've got a low cost little quad copter that you can bring the auto leveling down on. You can do amazing things with auto leveling turned off but it really changes your concentration. With leveling on you are thinking about where to go next, with it off you have to think multiple move ahead to get everything into the right position and speeds.
That has been my typical point of view. If the crunch is due to an unexpected issue, I'll help the company out. If the crunch is continuous and due to bad management, then management can deal with it.
In engineering I learned to just say screw you at crunch times beyond what I could handle. I'm still employed and getting raises at the same pace as my old work my tail off days.
Eve Online... OK, doesn't fit the impact on all other forms of entertainment or as large of a population but it does have a pretty good size population. Of course I've avoided WoW because I wanted something more out of a game than hand holding.
One of the problems with steam is that it doesn't ramp up fast enough due to valves opening up. Airplanes have to be held back at first and used to use bolts that sheared off at the right force. A cold or hot cat can occur if the steam isn't managed properly. In a cold cat there isn't enough pressure to get the plane up to speed and it stalls, I think the same thing can happen if the airplane is released too early. With a hot cat it can potentially rip the gear right off the aircraft. This is all less common that it used to be but steam isn't all that easy to control.
I think the greater interest is less mechanism necessary for EM systems vs all the steam setup.
Let's cut the crap. All those similar competitive GAMES require a similar mind set. Greed, an ability not to get mindlessly bored doing the same thing over and over and over ad infinitum, an inability to achieve anything beyond that (otherwise they would) and of course a total willingness to publicly lie about the virtues of products they are paid promote. 'Er' yah, three cheers for that, why, seriously why?
Hey, I think you just described a career! Well, marketing anyway.
Sports also involve accuracy and reactions. I also think of race car drivers as athletes due to the long mental focus and physical accuracy required (though the drivers prior to power steering and brakes were bigger athletes). On the other hand I don't consider it the same type of athleticism.
Like people who fly airplanes vs those who program UAVs. There are similarities and there are differences. Both do fly however.

YMMV.

Right, because the number of fatalities due to nuclear power have been horrific! http://www.the9billion.com/201...

Or you can get a job doing what you love and the only openings are in corporations that suck all the joy out of it.

Yeah, I'd pick the original Warcraft. WoW was not all that original.

Or 3 on 3 basketball. Have you seen some of the guys playing that?

Which matches my own style of humor but being slashdot it is often hard to tell a joke from a smack on the head ;)
