If they do this, I want a warning in HUGE neon letters warning me. I don't like antibiotics, or anything like them. I fight things on my own, who needs a weak immune system. When I get VERY sick I ask the doc "will this kill me if I don't take your wussy antibiotics". When he says no, then I stay runned down that extra week, so what. After years of practicing this, surprise, I don't get sick. Stuff that knocks everyone in the office down for a week takes me all of a day to get over. Antibiotics, ha, I spit on your grave. Food poisioning? I could eat raw swine if I felt so inclined.
I highly doubt Itanium. I think a more likely is that:
A) Intel has an oh-so-secret RISC processor that is mac compatible. Keep in mind that RISC is not foreign to them. They do make ARM processors. Granted, the linked CPU would be too slow, but they still understand RISC.
B) Intel will use IBM's new chip design and fab them, rebranded as some equally stupid marketing name as the Itanium.
Neither case is likely, but 100x more likely then Itanium being used.
Does this mean that they will port IOS to the cheaper Linksys stuff, or are we stuck with QOS or whatever Linksys currently uses. Not that it does a bad job, but i'm used to how IOS functions.
The biggest risks are intellectual-property issues. SCO Group, holder of the original patents for Unix software upon which Linux is based, has announced plans to form a licensing division and hire superlawyer David Boies to press its claims against sellers of Linux
I didn't think Linux was based on UNIX. BSD was, but not Linux. It's a UNIX work-a-like, I'll give them that. But based on code from it...maybe 1% if that. Am I way off here?
Something I've wondered...

I remember a not so long ago slashdot article talking about one of the laptops the feds seized had encrypted data they couldnt' access. What was the key size? I'd feel warm and cozy if you said 512 or smaller, since most of us now use 1024.
Since the companies that put it there are no longer around, who owns them? I mean, what would stop someone from tapping into it. Or did ma gobble them up for $.000015 a mile only to not use it. Where's my any-media-ever-produced-any-time-I-want-it-for-nex t-to-nothing? Huh, where is it. I was promised in the early 90s by many many commercials that by now we'd have this. I don't see it. Someone has some explaining to do. What was it they said...and the company that'll bring it to you, ATT. I wonder if I google search for and image of thier CEO with his pants of fire I'll find it.
It's not like you have to call. I've tried that before, when you do get through you get an intern who takes a message. I usually get replies by email though still probably an intern.
Prince, or whatever he calls himself now, did this years ago. Sells music off his website. When was that last time you heard anything of him? I don't think you can make it without Radio/MTV/RIAA.
How many guys do you know running slowaris on thier laptop? I can't think of anyone.
Remember back in the day when it was a right of passage just to get Linux on your laptop (with X)? We can now have those days again. Hardware support, who needs it. Real men write thier own device drivers. For $99 I can have bragging rights and show my domanance as the alpha geek. Oh yeah, I'm in.
If the DMCA had existed back in the day Compaq wouldn't have been legally allowed to reverse engineer the IBM bios and make PCs as common as they are today. A whole insdustry sprang from something now no longer possible. Many of the asian countries don't give two shits about your IP. They will reverse engineer it and make it better/cheper/faster. Why? Because they can. All the DMCA does is screw the small guy with the dream.
This initive wopuld prevently me from making copies of the music I own...that I find offensive...
I agree with you. It'll be a shame if you can't rip to MP3, OGG, etc. The problem is that we think that we own the music. By fair use rights, I think we should. Talk to a record industry exec and he'll tell you that you don't own the music at all, more of a licence to play it on your CD player. Sorta like MS does with Windows. I'm predicting that within a year we will see shrink wrapped CDs with licences stickered to them. when that happens I officially stop buying CDs. I haven't really bought any in about a year though anyway. It's utter shite that comes out now a day...oh god...did I just age 15 years? "Back in my day we used to copy CDs to mp3, it was legal"
I like the effort, but they could do more. Ok, here's the biggest problem with most software companies. The academic version isn't much cheaper. For example, I can go to the bookstore here at IUPUI and get a copy of MS anything for around $5 per CD. That's $25 for VS.net, $5 for XP Pro, etc. Why of why doesn't RedHat, SUN, and everyone else get in on this. We have whole generations of college students that have no idea how to use anything else but MS products. Why did they buy them? Because it was hundreds cheaper than the "alternative". I'm guilty of buying a few MS CDs just so I could have a copy if I needed it. Which I did because I have a VB class. Thus I had to get XP and VS6. for a grand total of $5 (downloaded VS6 from IUWARE). If sun would step up and give away CDs like MS does, as well as offer cheap hardware like apple does for us, then maybe just maybe MS's strangle hold on everyone would start to vanish.
So, what about the screwdriver-shack white box PCs? Is Intel going to make CPUs only for the new "trusted" computers? If so then will we have only HP and crew to make our hardware? Please tell me VIA isn't on the list. If they are not, then all is ok, we'll still have the DIY computers. I'd take a slow CPU Cyrix/Via made over one that sends my keystrokes to the feds "just in case". And even worse, what if some cool-arse-must-have-new-game comes out that only runs on this new crap from MS. May the flees of a thousand camels come to nest in the genitalia of the people responsible for that mess.
Then again, I'm known for my xfiles style paranoia.
....is that most likely they will attempt to prosecute the parties responsible. Yet, they don't want to be held accountable to these same laws. It reminds me of the south park episode when chef was taken to court for telling the RIAA someone stold his stinky britches song.
Yeah, when I talked to her she seemed surprised that it was even going on. I posted my comment from there. I was surprised when I talked to her and found out that the exchange 2000 guy WAS in fact one of us....there is no justice. A linux guy being forced to know exchange just to pay the bills.
Um, where did everyone go? There was one guy showed up that looked like he could be one of us, then he picked up an Exchange 2000 book up off the shelf...thus removing all doubt.
I found the easiest way is map a drive to a network share. Make a backupmyshtuff.bat on thier desktop that copies all of thier data to the share. users are good about it if it's only a double click. much beyond that and they won't do it.
Well since they like to have 95% temps, technically you didn't get laid off. You are "released to your temp agency". "we're on a hiring freeze". Bastards. I hope the stock goes down. It's not right the way they treat people in the name of profit. In indy we used to say we were the last stop before Mexico. They love to hire temps who have never even touched a computer, let alone put one together. You would be amazed at how many broken p4s happen because they can't remember to lift the latch on the ZIF socket. Then you turn it on.....poof. MB, CPU, and sometimes RAM up in a lovely ozone-plastic smelling cloud.
Am I bitter about my lack of being hired? Yes. Am i pissed that the temp agenct tells everyone who goes in there if they do a good job they'll be hired in three months? Yes. Would I buy a compaq PC? Hell no. Still buy a server though...that's good stuff.
Or student copies or copies that MS gives them for free
Not Quite Free. I had to pay $6 for my copy of XP Pro at the IUPUI bookstore. They don't even have a Linux distro available there. I've wanted to call and ask RH why this is so. Why can't I get a boxed (must one up MSFT) version of RH for say $5. Nor can I get Slowaris. Since I am a CS major I think it would be nice for the various UNIX vendors to offer a CHEAP CD to those who have a valid student ID. You can get Star Office though....go figure.
I have my CCNA, CCDA, and MCSE. On top of that 5 years experience as a network admin. I STILL can't find a job in Indy right now. I'm working as a permatemp at Compaq fixing hardware that the line can't seem to put together right (for $10/hr). If someone tells me that I am "overqualified" or "we know you'll leave when the economy picks back up" I'm going to go postal. Thus why I'm going back to school to get the PhD. Oh wait, i'll be waaaaaay overqualified then.
Everytime I hear those commercials for IT training at masterpro I want to call them up and tell them what a bunch of F!@#ing liars they are. You will not make $70,000 in IT with no experience but a stupid piece of paper. You might get $25,000 if you are lucky. You'll be doing Level 1, I can tell you that much.
Features
Supports PowerPC(TM) 750 CX processor up to 133 MHz
Articia S Chipset
Three 32-bit 33MHz PCI slots on board
One AGP/PCI (66 MHz AGP 2X or 33/66 MHz PCI) slot on board
Supports 72-bit (with ECC) Data Path SDRAM up to 2Gbytes
Two 168-pin DIMM slots on board
PowerPC Linux Kernel 2.4.5 support
All for the low, low price of nearly $3000. I'm all for being able to roll my own PPC system. I've always wanted a PPC, but stayed away becuase I can build my own PC for 1/2 the cost. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that it happened. But still...$3k?
I don't think it will take much hacking. Nvidia chip set, Intel CPU, Segate HD. If CD Boot isn't disabled you can probably take the HD out, put your own in and install linux. I'm half tempted to buy one just so I can see....but I vowed I would never own on, so I'll have to let somone else try it.
