That may have been the case since NT4.0 was so buggy and unpredictable. But I really think MS's long term goal is to turn computer professionals into low-paid click monkeys. How many NT sysadmins do any troubleshooting more complex than uninstall/reinstall, reboot, install service pack/hotfix/updated driver?

Oh please. You should be happy you don't have Frys out there. They are the most freakin' annoying place to shop. Somewhere between shopping in the former Soviet Union and Radio Shack. Their regular prices are not cheaper than anyone else. They rewrap returned merchandise and sell as new. They're just evil. Of course, sometimes they have an irresistable price on some sale item, and I just can't stay away even with the lines and the surly help.

And I agree about home built systems. Fuck the Microsoft tax.

Athlons always had great bang for the buck, but also have higher power consumption and higher heat load. The P-III's are a little slower and more expensive, but they're still more than fast enough for gaming. A P-III 933 is under $150. For even lower power consumption and more speed the P-III 1.2G is about $275. That's more expensive than a P4 1.8G, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really concerned with power and heat.

If you still want AMD, the Athlon XP is faster and runs cooler than the Athlon Tbird. The XP1500 is cheap too.

Personally I think the virus scenario was a little farfetched, but launching DoS attacks on file trading networks is very plausible, and it's still a computer crime.
