That's interesting because I remember trying 4.0 right after it came out. I remember the arguments over whether they should release it as a "finished" product and the KDE team responded by saying it's a X.0 release so you shouldn't expect it to be as polished or stable and if you need something stable stick with 3.5.

  4. Re:Updated TOS on Italian Consumer Watchdog Sues Microsoft Over 'Windows Tax' · · Score: 1

Total bull. That was true a decade ago but thanks to the Internet ANYBODY can buy ANY kind of machine, desktop, laptop, netbook, server, and do so without Windows. Not only does Dell offer Ubuntu machines now but there are plenty of specialty retailers like System 76 that are more than happy to have your business.

Yes, but you are limited to specific models that are offered in a "Linux" variety. Why can't I find the hardware I want without having to pay for software I don't want? I happen to like Thinkpads, but the models I like don't come without Windows.

To me this "Windows tax" crap smells like trying to eat your cake and have it too. These people want the lower prices that comes with bundling trialware but then want to just go "my bad" and get money back ON TOP of the lower prices they don't qualify for well sorry friend, it shouldn't work that way. Just as you can't buy basic cable and then demand they remove the ads or give you money back for the channels you don't want, so too should you not get the lower price that comes with trialware if you refuse to take the OS the trialware requires.

I bet these that scream "Windows tax!" would STFU if the OEMs said "Well we only pay $15 for Windows in bulk, but that trialware we install nets us $75. So you actually owe us $60 for the difference. Shall we just use your CC that we have on file?"

The issue is controlling where your money is going. With other companies giving the computer manufacturer money it isn't a big deal. With the manufacturer sending my money off to Microsoft that is more of an issue. So what if I am willing to spend a little extra to make sure Microsoft doesn't get any of my money? In fact, if Windows weren't so forced this trialware crap would probably spread to the other options as well so the revenue from that would be close.

Hell even if I did want Windows I would pay extra for them to not install all the garbage and to actually give me an install CD rather than the "recovery disc" BS. If I it weren't for the fact that the first thing I do with a new laptop is install Linux this behavior would make me seriously consider Apple.

Not that I disagree with your overall point (in fact I am probably supporting it here), but with both Starcraft 2 and Half-Life 2 whether they are good sequels depends on what you want.

Starcraft 2 has only a 3 star rating on Amazon. It's fine for normal games but they have some major screwups in the custom game system. 30 second countdown timer that starts as soon as the game fills up. During which the only "useful" thing you can do is leave the game, which doesn't even cancel the timer. So it's basically a "you have 30 seconds to screw up this game for everyone" timer. Finding custom games is ok but the rest of it you would think they could at least improve over Warcraft 3.

Half-life 2 had no multi-player out of the box. Their reasoning was that Counter-Strike: Source was the multi-player. I spent countless hours playing the classic Half-Life at LAN parties. Not to mention the weapons in HL2 overall were not as fun for multi-player aside from the gravity gun. So yeah it had a great single player experience, but if you were interested in multi-player it was a disappointment.

Except they are trained to spot drunk drivers. And if the drunk driver is driving normally they're probably not that drunk and not much of a hazard. With more patrols you can catch someone if and when they start driving badly.

Though maybe the checkpoint I experienced was just badly run and that's why it caused traffic problems. If it weren't for the traffic issues I wouldn't have minded.

It just held up traffic and pissed everyone off (I was on my way home from work). Then the cops pulled anyone over who saw the traffic and tried to make a U-Turn. This was my only experience with this sort of checkpoint though.

So is there a significant benefit to these checkpoints that couldn't be solved by more police patrolling? It seems like by the time the people hit the checkpoint they've already had plenty of time to cause an accident unless everyone is coming from the same party and this "checkpoint" is at the exit to the parking lot.

I just don't understand why any informed Linux user bothers with these 'few years ago' comparisons. Tremendous progress has been made over these past few years. Linux hardware support today is nothing like what it used to be years ago. Look at all the hardware that's now being supported natively in Linux - ATI cards are being actively developed and open sourced, and even Broadcomm has opened their drivers to name a few. And support gets better and better with every new release (Ubuntu or otherwise). There's just no reason to complain if things were bad 'a few years ago.'

And yet many distros have been shipping with that nouveau video card driver with the 3D features disabled because they're still experimental. Fedora, I'm looking at you! Fortunately Ubuntu has stayed sane by letting you know you probably want to install the vendor's drivers and opensuse has a one click install to get some video drivers that don't suck once you realise what's going on and poke around their wiki.

Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of Linux and for the most part it's very plug and play now, but pushing this nouveau thing before it was done is an example of a major screw up in the ease of use department by several distros. As much as I would like for it not to be the case there are still valid complaints about Linux.
