I just attended the trial here at Beckman Auditorium.

    The Judge ruled as follows:
Motion to dismiss charges against Caltech - granted under institutional provision of DMCA.
Motions to dismiss charges against David Baltimore, "Prof Law", and "John Johnson" denied.

Thanks to Hon. Judge Lew, Seth Schoen of the EFF, and Brad Hunt of the MPA for helping with this trial.

My very rough trial notes are available here (with biased non-lawyer view showing through)

There will probably be a followup trial next year, as this was just the motion to dismiss.

Not quite sure on the sarcasm level of your comment - but the fact he was British was of note for several reasons:

I met him in Los Angeles, a place where one does not always expect to find someone born and raised in England.

Took me about 10 minutes afterward to realize that half of our conversation was actually regarding his wife's pregnancy

He also called up his contacts at Apple to see if they could get a SuperDrive into my TiBook. Combined with his convincing to get all the parts for free, I can think of no other explanation than insanity.

If you're ever in Great Dunmow, try the fish and chips. Best of my life.

  10. Re:A story: on AppleCare for PowerBooks - Worth it or Wasted? · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Here's my story:

I've got a PB 800 DVI, and shortly into my school year I had a little issue with it. I was trying to disconnect one of those awful ultra-tiny cat5 cables that absolutely refuse to come out easily. Unfortunately, I put a little too much pressure on the front right part of my nice little TiBook inside of the lighter outside frame - and broke a support inside.

Called up Apple, gave them a close-to-the-truth story, and was told, effectively, 'screw you, man, screw you.' Got a suggested price for my little mishap of $600. This was *not* just a 'you would have paid' - it was a 'ship it to us right now'.

Took the computer to a local place... has 'tek' in its name, I believe - and the crazy British guy did a wonderful job. Convinced Apple to actually cover it under warranty.

Warranty is definitely worth it. And you mgiht want to check that it's not a 90-day coverage, instead of a year.

The point is not typing speed; it is that we don't have to worry about missing anything. Collective notes means that you're more likely to get *everything* and also able to take it in a semi-organized fashion - and once lecture is done, you don't have to go back, review it, and do error correction. Take care of it while the lecturer is speaking, and afterwards you have more understandable and useful notes.

The second half of your comment is efffectively agreeing with my basic concept - computer notes are more legible and more easily organized.

    I'll bite.

In my introductory political science class, a group of us routinely use Hydra [over Rendezvous] to take collective notes - it gets over the inabillity of individuals to take notes at the speed of the lecture, but afterwards everything is much more complete and legible than possible with everyone taking their own hand notes.

We all have Powerbooks, and that helps things out also for ease of setup.

Cell phones are banned from gate to gate. You are not allowed to use them during flight.

I recall an anecdote of a lady. She used her phone while approaching the airport (coverage in the air would be absolutely amazing) and was met at the gate by law enforcement.

They are *not* allowed in the air.

I just called our insurance agent today regarding this - schedule laptops with a minimal deductible. The rate for us was about $.75 / $100 value / year, covering loss, theft, or basically anything else that removes my ability to make use of it. This is by adding it to my folk's current homeowner's insurance plan.

You'll need the standard stuff - receipts, serial numbers, and all that jazz.

I'm flying tomorrow (today), and I am truly not looking forward to going through security with both my powerbook and two hard drives as well.
