I've said it before..There *ARE* 2 groups at Microsoft
Marketing and Developers.
I wouldn't blame billG, he's more of a software engineer than a marketing mongul.
Take a look at past software projects that were designed by engineers and not marketing.
Xbox - kickass hardware, kickass platform
.NET from a technical perspective (common type system, xml-centric, logical)
Windows NT, Dave Cutler was a true blue software engineer
Lets look at Marketing projects
Windows ME - BOMB
Sharepoint - Nobody uses this, POS
Hailstorm - canned, haha, oops
They need to drop their marketing dept and put the engineers back in charge.
There's nothing wrong with making money off software...in fact, its preferred. But its the method of which its done.
Post his name and email address here on Slashdot. Let us know his company name too. Before he knows it he'll be getting email from the President, Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln...lets see him try to sue Bill Gates...wonder who would win that one.
Students fund it. A university would be just a bunch of people talking to themselves and not getting paidif it weren't for the students. Don't forget who butters your bread.
I'm a senior undergrad in New Media at IU Indianapolis. The University is always quick to show all this fancy equipment and high technology stuff (Internet2, CAVE)...but the students never see it or use it. We fund it, but we're not allowed to touch.
I really think software needs to have lemon laws. Much like the auto-industry, if they sell you crap...you get your money back.
IMHO, this is the biggest issue with software (Linux included)...there's no liablity. There's no real incentive to not produce crap software, besides people not buying it.
It's broken?, it doesn't work?, Doesn't do XYZ? Too bad. You're screwed. Once you buy it and use it, u can't return it. You just have to either deal with buggy software or eat the loss.
Who do you think had the whole HailStorm idea? Marketing.
You can almost hear the conversation in the meeting Marketing: "This will be great! People can log in from anywhere!" Developers: "Yeah, that's technically possible." Marketing: "Then Go! Go! Go!"
I imagine starting HailStorm and canceling HailStorm were topics of fiery debates inside the Fortress of Microsoft.
Finally a techno Exec probably said "This is stupid. Who is really going to sign up with us? Pay Microsoft to authenticate their users?"
One more thing....Figure out what.NET before you talk about it. FUD.
How do the exec's let things like this happen? Surely the understand the importance of customer loyalty? I'm a comcast customer, and when i move here in 4/5 months...i'm going sattelite and DSL. NEVER COMCAST AGAIN!
I'd like to get the email addresses of their executive commitee....anyone know'em?:)
I'm currently an New Media undergrad at IUPUI (a divison of Indiana University). It seems like the department is too immature to be concidered "educational". They cater to the nonTechie, who think "computers, i've used one of those before, i'm a computer geek". So nothing is learned by someone that already knows basic HTML and graphic design. What a waste. I was a Computer Technology major at Purdue last year, and they were finally starting to weed people out that were in over their head.
If you're that opposed to it...quit. Their loss. By caving in you're just giving employers permission to walk over you.
Let your skills be your selling point...not your credit report.
What do u think the range of a transmitter the size of a grain of rice is that has no power of its own? Not far.

Do i get a real world ip? or some propritary 'thing' and then i go through their proxy?
What happens when VoIP goes over port 80 or 443. They're going to effectivly pause Panama's technological progression. Oops!

why not just develop their own custom hardware and throw a Crusoe chip onbaord to handle legacy code?

Brought down. The Slashdot Effect is in full force! haha
Doesn't IPv6 take care of all of this, it is the "Next Gen protocol". Why doesn't AOL impliment it?
If my car has a safety issue, does it not affect me if i'm not told about it?
We run an Exchange Server where i work, it's been up for 2 months on Win2k. Granted, it runs on it's own server. But it's very easy to maintain
what about running the digitalout on my soundcard to the digitalin?
