  1. YUCK! on Rewritable Song Lyrics · · Score: 1

One more nail in the coffin of creativity. However I believe that this system was already created in a more free (as in beer) form... I think they called it the blues. Everyone uses the same three chords and just comes up with their own lyrics.

That all sounds great but can you imagine trying to tech support that? "You say you can't get to your email? Have you tried thinking about it?" In reality the learning curve of your average desktop user may never allow this.

At best I see something like this working just about as well as current voice recognition software.

DRM free downloads YAY! $.30 price jump for removing a major flaw in their sales model??? That's messed up. I dig the fact that they're publishing higher bit rates, but it's hardly worth 30 cents each song. It would cost me a small fortune to "upgrade" my itunes collection.

Perhaps a better model would be DROP DRM, price 128k songs at $.50 and 256k songs at $.99

Nice try Steve, but wrong again. I think there's a big place in the market right now for competing digital music stores.

  9. a 1080p LCD stole my heart on Plasma or LCD? · · Score: 1

This year my wife and I decided to spring for a new TV. Yes I'll admit that shopping for a HDTV this Christmas season was a bit of a daunting task. LCD, DLP, PLASMA, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, HDMI, and all of it a bit confusing to the consumer. Seems like everywhere we'd go people where giving us a different answer. Some people would tell me that Plasma though lower resolution is actualy better then lcd because of the contrast ratio. While others would tell me how 720p looks better to the eye then 1080i even though it's lower resolution. Still others would tell me how 1080p is pointless.

I found the truth to be somewhere else entirely. Funny how one thing that people seem forget to take into consideration is "How does it look in person?". After shopping on-line, my head was spinning, but the fact was when I got to the store the 40" Samsung 1080p LCD just looked the best. The screen was big, the black looked black, there didn't seem to be any motion blur, and the resolution was astounding while viewing a blue-ray disc.

And to all you folks that believe that CRTs "always" out perform LCD. I'll just say this, you wont see me going back to my old sony wega any time soon. :)

  14. Material possessions kill the soul on The Latest iPod Assassination Attempt · · Score: 1

It's best not to get wrapped up in what the next thing is, or in this case what's going to knock off Steve Jobs' hat. The bottom line is, any Ipod is still a great way of listening to music today, and more power to you if you buy a 3rd party mp3 player.

I think of the ipod simply as a way of listening to music, and I will keep using my Ipod Color until I break it or forget it on the bus. Who knows what I'd use at that point.

Personally I think of the nano as a status symbol (much like a palm pilot back in the day), and the ipod video just seems like a way of draining the battery as fast as possible. Maybe it would be kinda cool if it played divx.

You'll meet a lot of people out there who have mp3 players with nothing on them. So whatever.

I did some tests a while back to see what format sounded most like the original CD. Between mp3, wma, aac & ogg. (Using a detla 44 hi-fi sound card and sony studio headphones) After compairing the formats, I wasn't able to tell the difference between the ogg files and the original CD format. Most interesting was the footprint left by ogg files... very very small. Often 1/2 the size of the mp3 files.

Right off the bat I started encoding my cd rips right to ogg and was quite happy doing things that way.

I ended up going back to the mp3 format once I got my ipod. Lame! (not the encoder) I really wish Apple would pick up the slack here and offer a wider range of supported audio formats.

Honestly in the future I see us adapting to using uncompressed wav files or even upgrading our audio standards to 24bit 96k wavs. (oh they sound so good) With more bandwidth and more storage - I don't see this being to far off.

Until then I'm sticking with Vinyl Records and my crappy 192kbps mp3s

You can't compare Apple to Gateway. Apple isn't selling the same product and same software as every other vendor. (that was gateways problem) If they did anything at all they certainly wouldn't OEM the software.

And where do you think Apple get's it hardware anyhow? Their using Intel X86 chips, nvidia video cards, Seagate ide hard-drives. Kinda sounds like a PC, oh wait! It is. The days of apple only hardware is long gone man.

The support overhead is really quite low. Between a system of outsourcing, bottem dollar employees, and a general "don't ever help the customer" ideal. PC makers actauly do alright selling support.

People who buy Mac hardware, would still continueto do so. I doubt anyone with a powerbook titanium would ever give it up for a placstic cased dell. Mac users are all about aesthetics and status. Though I bet they would sell less Minis in the end if they started selling OSx for x86.

Mac dosen't make much money on selling Os X because they're really not in the OS market. Think about it. The only people who even by it are people who are running os 9 (a very small % of the computer market) and most computers that are running os 9 can't really run OS X. Chances are good they'll just by a new IMac or powerbook insted.

Don't forget about linux and DIY users. Those would be the folks who would be the first to move...

The bottem line is growing the Mac user base. The more people who are exposed to Mac OS the more people there will be to sell hardware, support, services & software to... the list goes on.
