I would say this one is still an okay story to put on Slashdot compared to some of the other constantly anti-Apple stories ( really, have we all come to a consensus Apple is evil and others are not? and I am not an Apple fan either ) and the anti-TSA stuff (how many stories do we need of that? We all are in agreement about that one for sure). Why is this particular story interesting? IMHO , how bad is faking your identity online ? I mean did she solicit students for sex ? or was it just to know the current vibe among? Did she just wanna be a cool principal by knowing what goes on among her students ? I briefly read the above article about the whole PE teacher thing. I dont know. Has no one used a fake name in real life ever? Does Facebook have a policy that you cannot lie about your age to underage kids ? I think it raises some interesting questions about online identities. I mean what if she was friends with some kid in the school and she got that kid to give her the username/password of their fb account (hypothetically speaking) and just looked at all her friends profiles and walls etc. Wouldn't that be similar to this?

It is cold here in the winter time so kids cannot go out much. There are only that many other things around the house that you can get them engaged in. Besides, the computer has some cool paint software that kids can play with. There is also one app on the Ipad (among the many) that teaches how to play piano. As long as you don't let them spend too much time on the computer and you can properly monitor their usage, it is fine for kids to be on the computer to get familiar with it.

Within days of their visit my dad, who is not much of a computer person, will call me asking why windows has stopped working. I got a lot of software installed on their computer to monitor these things, yet somehow the kids always managed to install some crap. One good thing that happened was when they turned their attention to Ipads. It has apps on it that are kid friendly but haven't seen Viruses Trojans etc in Ipad apps yet.

Google has been experimenting with so many things lately. They are fiddling with self-driven cars, trying to get into home entertainment system , cell phone business etc. I have been a big fan of google, but lately I have been issues with a lot of their products. This is mostly maintainence stuff but it annoys me, especially considering that the products were good and easy to use in the beginning such that I switched to using google stuff for a lot of my day to day activities; Gmail has become slower and every now and then does something weird which forces me to close/reopen the tab Chrome memory usage has gone way up in case anyone is noticing. With the approx same number of tabs and plugins/extensions etc , I see all the different chrome processes add up to the same amount as firefox or even more. I could have sworn it was lesser around 6 months back. Google talk connection quality has gone down The gmail app on android has a tonne of bugs with respect to syncing and notifications. They keep fixing some and creating some everytime we have a new release. Currently, my android is not showing me notifications from Gmail app. I see them only from the stock email app. Now, google wallet earlier got pretty bad reviews for security and even this time around their ratings were not good. I wonder if they can put their weight behind only some of the items and make sure they get out a good product and maintain it properly would that be a better thing to do. I know they recently cancelled some projects, but they still have a lot of projects in a lot of myriad areas.

You have no idea how correct you are. As someone who has worked in the "core" areas, Cisco leadership now comprises of people who have stayed there due to various reasons like politics, visa issues etc etc. Most of the really smart people responsible for the networking boom in Cisco have left for greener ventures or they got tired of the politics/incompentency that is rampant in Cisco. Another example that is really close to my heart - The unit I worked for has around 500+ people out of which it is safe to say 450+ are Indians. It is safe to say the situation is the same in other units as well. The culture has become so Indianized that managers often talk in hindi and organize lunches to Indian places even if there is maybe 1 non-indian in the group (what will he do , quit ? ). The situation is so bad that even within Indians there is politics. My group that I worked on comprises of 5 people out of which 4 are from the same part of India. The 2nd level Manager only looks for people that are from the same part of India as he is. This is also visible in other groups across my BU. No problem against Indians for me, but these people brought with them a highly non-professional and obsolete management style consisting of manager-worship, no questions asked style of leadership and that was suffocating for me as a developer. Any average person like me in Cisco is bound to get frustrated and leave!. Most people there choose to stay because they have their green cards being processed and they cannot leave. The managers know that well and they try to exploit that in every way possible. The end result is an extremely mediocre management team that now faces competition from Huawei, Juniper, HP etc and has no clue how to go about it.
