  2. Re:an unpopular opinion. on Fidel Castro Is Dead (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

My dear slashdoter, I would like your opinion to be true. I'm from Brazil, and we've just had a coup against president Dilma some months ago. Argentina has now a liberal president. Venezuela is walking into a bad path. More and more we se Trumps popping aroung in south america, and it really looks like US is comming again, as if to regain power in face of China and Russia growing in importance. And just as the new president (Michel Temer) rised to to power, he have open national oil reserves to all kinds of big companies (from US). He's trying to privatize more public companies, making education and health (public) services worse by taking money out from then, using as an excuse the lack of public funds to pay for it, but at the same time raising the salaries of high position politics and judges - so he can grant his position in face of public uprise against those policies. FIdel's death was commented on most big tv news, and he was depicted mostly as a dictator and bad guy. This goes well with the agenda we are seeing here, whre communism and marxism are intrinsically said to be bad for democracy (or whatever), the left wing is being demonized and linked with concepts that don't even make sense because the left party which raised to power in 2002 was not that left after getting the presidential chair. Freedom is being taking from individuals all around the world in a steady pace. For the sake of all this argument, see Naomi Klein and her's Shock Doctrine. It's available on youtube. And now there is a coup inside the coup being started. All around the world I feel this movement of great players taking their positions to begin a new cold war.

  3. Brazil experience on Finland Prepares Their First Tests Of A Universal Basic Income (futurism.com) · · Score: 1

For the very poor people in Northeast and North Brazil, the basic income policy worked VERY well. Marie Claire Brazil even has an article about it (in portuguese, sorry) http://revistamarieclaire.glob... And after a couple of years, people were even able to quit the program by themselves. They asked to quit because they were earning enough to not need the help anymore. This policy certainly worked because it provided for the minimum amount of money a person needs to survive. But after this point, would it be of any worth? Let's see. I just believe so.

After Kepler finding so many different planets and even here in the solar system where we have so much bizarre conditions (like life) in planets and moons, I wouldn't think that having so many comets around a star is an implausible idea after all. Or aliens. Space is big, all variations of conditions have a big chance to occur. We have life here on Earth (which is a incredible rare event, for sure), we have nitrogen or carbon dioxide blocks sliding down hills on Mars, we have geysers of ice on moons around jupiter, we have underground oceans on a moon of jupiter which surface look like a giant cheese cake with sugar on top of it , we have lakes of methane on titan, even Pluto has a Pluto face draw on it. The sun itself is a wonder, a ball of hydrogen emitting light for billions of years (i find this amazing). i know science has to prove things, but not believing something is not possible in such an enormous universe is silly.

  7. I'd like to have InDesign for Linux. Scribus is just ok (at least in the last time ive used it), but doe's not compare at all with InDesign. Version CS3 would totally be ok for me, for later version are only slightly better and CS3 already has JS support. For ME, linux versions or generic versions (libreoffice vs ms office, gimp vs ps, inkscape vs illustrator, and so on) of softwares are very good tools already. One can already do anything using linux.

Somehow, the same concept: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... But only the propulsion system is encased in vacuum-like conditions. Very nice idea, embedded safe "devices" for when the system goes down. The hyperloop ideia is not that new, only that now instead of encasing only the propulsion system hyperloop encases the whole vehicle.

  9. Old netbook + webcams on Ask Slashdot: Are There Any Open and Affordable IPCams? · · Score: 1

I've been playing around with an old (circa 2009) netbook running atom with two logical cpus and 2GB of RAM, also using motion to get the pictures. I didn't try more than one camera, but I think it would work - meaning, i think atom would handle the task. Motion allows you to set up more then one camera at the same time. You can save the pictures as video, and only if there is any movement, if you want. Try changing the values, the conf file is very well commented. Pay attention to sudden light changes, because they trigger false movement (you can adjust how much light change triggers video saving). I think the only issue is getting usb cables long enough for you needs. I don't know how long can a usb cord be. 2 meters (6 feet?) is a bet. Good webcams are expensive, so buying stuff and building a CCTV maybe is not cheaper then buying stuff ready out of the box.

  10. Homeopathy also works on Is the End of Government Acceptance of Homeopathy In Sight? · · Score: 1

I'm no believer of mystic medicine, but for one thing homeopathy works: friends that tell me they are using it often say the "doctor" actually talks to them, ask how are their lives, how is it going, etc., and by taking troubles out of their chests, some illnesses just go away. The medicine itself is probably just assuring something to themselves, but in the end, the cure works. This is a good move, since more and more doctors just don't care for their patients, they just want to finish the consult and call the next customer, for more and more money. Listening to people can, many times, effectively help them. If it quacks luck a duck, sits like a duck, and dilutes like a duck, it's a duck.

  11. How it works in Brazil on Obama: Maybe It's Time For Mandatory Voting In US · · Score: 1

In Brazil we have mandatory voting, but it is far from perfect because the (big) campaings are paid by big companies. So, the more politicians are inclined to money, and to do "favors" when they win elections, the more companies will inject money. Even Lula (from the left party, in the good old days) surrendered himself (in part) for power and favors to become president. There is this idea going on here to make elections funded by public money, so every party would have equal chances. Of course, the big ones are not happy with this, since they will not be alowed to receive money from "donators". Alstom, for instance, is involved in corruption with a governor who made them win a contract to build some subway lines in São Paulo (the city, no the state). I think that, if in US voting becomes mandatory, it is likely the system will be the same we have here now.
