The ubiquity of Microsoft Word means that you can choose to share your files in just about any format you want. After all, Word can read almost anything with it's built-in converters.
I'm not sure what format to go with, though. WordPerfect? That's still a proprietary format, even though it runs on Linux. RTF has a bad reputation, and ironically, Microsoft got in big trouble with the press and public when it used RTF instead of the Word 6 native format to share files from Word 97.
The HTML/XML format that Word 2000 produces contains all of the formatting of the native file format. And yes, you can read them in any browser on any platform, if you're willing to wait 10 minutes for it to parse all of the new tags.
Personally I'll stick with ASCII. Sure it's limited, but we all use it all day for email anyway. We all need to worry more about grammar and spelling than special formatting anyway.
I would guess that the number of students that have ever been shot in school is still in the double digits, while kids that have ever been killed by an airplane falling on them is probably triple digits.
That's just a guess, but notice he didn't say "have an airplane fall out of the sky and kill them in school"
However, I would also guess that the rate of children being shot in school is increasing while planes falling is probably not.
Lets put it this way: If I were an insurance company, I would invent a new policy that paid out only in the event of a child getting shot in school. I could sell it for pennies and still get rich.
I've seen statistics like that before, but only from highly biased sources.

Since the shootings I've been hearing plans for new school security that sound like something out of a prison. Armed guards, metal detectors, surveillance cameras, secured exits, etc. Maybe they should add radar to the list.
Why do people have such are hard time putting things in perspective?
If the rapist failed to get a serious sentence, then that's outrageous. But... to try to intimidate the victim (which is what he was trying to do -- I don't think he really believed any of that logging nonsense) sounds terrible, but think about it. We'd all like for rape victims to not have their ordeal continued, but most rape cases boil down to "he said/she said". Occasionally (not often) people make up stories. Doesn't the male have the right to have the police at least consider the possibility? The police often threaten to proscute witnesses who tell lies. Sure it's insulting, but it's also a good way to get people to "clarify" little details. Which is more important: justice or protecting the victim's feelings? We'd all like to get both, but it's not always easy.
P.S. Don't get me wrong -- I still think the detective crossed the line. I just think the line is a little blurrier than most of the posters I've read.
the best part about the glasses though, is that the screens are transparent to a degree, so you can see the "real world" through them while you are watching a video
That's good. That way I'll be able to wear them while I drive.
When was the last time that a Disney cartoon with a comic sidekick that didn't have an ethnic accent?
Why is that okay?
If they're going to limit upstream, what reason do they have for continuing their no-server rule?
I'd rather run some basic servers on my box with an upstream limit than have no limit and no servers.
Thanks for the link.
It must be my processor(P100) then. I had to wait forever for Netscape or IE to parse and display a simple Excel spreadsheet the one time I tried.
I know just how the kid feels.

That would explain the media's reluctance to devote much news coverage to the shootings. Very sensitive of them.
I was under the impression that the government was going to outlaw them.

Release notes
It doesn't look like download.com is hosting GNOME or KDE.
All I could find were links to the respective Web sites.
I think there are a lot of people out there who've been around for a while but have only recently relented and made an account.
I don't think it's fair to call them newbies just because they didn't sign up earlier.
Instead use the 2/3 cutoff to stop people from creating new accounts specifically to abuse the system.

So? I agree. It's right up his alley.

They only have Windows and Macintosh.
If the PR is completely bogus, as you say, that just makes it more interesting to talk about.
Don't go telling people what they can't talk about.
