In the case of AAPL stock, the price has gone up 8x in just two years. In stock traders terms, AAPL and GOOG are definitely bubble stocks -- nobody is doubting that the companies are great, but the stocks have gotten out of hand. A high stock rise like this indicates extreme expectations of where the company will be in a couple years. However, it is highly unlikely that a company as old and large as AAPL can grow that fast.

You may want to note that Apple P/E ratio has dropped from the 80s down to the low 40s (not counting the run up to MWSF) and its forward looking P/E is in the low 30s (not counting MWSF run up). I personally would love see the P/E down under 20 but the stock is trending down in P/E not up which is a good thing.

If patents cover this technology then we all have access to them since patents are in the public domain. This is what patents are about (originally)... to allow others to review the design and think about ways to possibly do it "better" (cheaper, more robust, more efficient, etc.) while still protecting the original inventor from direct / near direct copies of the technology outlined in the patent. Basically if you allow others to see what you are doing (give something) you will be granted protection of the idea(s) outlined in the patent (get something).

Anyway now it is possible that IBM could license others the ability to develop product despite holding a patent because of their general desire to support and protect their linux investment.

Umm... They are playing within the legal system here. They are asking the court that is considering an injunction against blackberry to consider the impact it would have to government operation. Companies and the public sector can do similar filings.

The main issue is what type of shutdown/shipment stop, if any, should happen for a system that has become critical to many folks knowing that the resolution of the patent dispute will take a decently long time (appeals and all). In my opinion no shutdown should take place but some type of escrow setup that Blackberry has to pay fines into. If in the end the patent holds this money would then go to the patent holder... or something like that.

  23. Re:The original goal of ITMS.. on Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple · · Score: 1

If you review the following Data Summary Q3 2005 (PDF) you find that ...

For Q3 2005 (the last quarter on record) Apple had revenues of 241 million from "other music products" which as Apple states consists of "Tunes Music Store sales and iPod related services and accessories". For the same quarter Apple saw revenues of 1,103 million and 1,565 million for iPod and Mac sales respectively. Apple's total revenue for the quarter was 3,520 million.

So revenues from iTMS for Q3 was no more then 14.6% of total revenues and likely a decent percentage less then that given the volume of Apple made iPod accessories and their prices relative to songs. Also if you do a little math on their song run sate you can guess that iTMS revenues are around 180-200 million dollars a quarter currently.

To me that doesn't qualify as sizable but it isn't something to sneeze at either.
