  2. iTunes is Carbon based (as is QuickTime) on Roundtable on Apple's Future · · Score: 1
iTunes on Windows has already introduced a significant amount of OS X AppKit codebase to Windows (on Intel of course)...

iTunes and QuickTime (both ported to Windows) are Carbon based, they are not Cocoa based nor do they use Objective-C (at least not in any main stream way that I know of).

So no AppKit came about as a result of iTunes being ported. Of course AppKit was ported to Windows (and other environments) back in the OpenStep days but likely the port hasn't been maintained much with the newer UI paradigm that Mac OS X has been using (sheets, etc)..

I laugh every time I see a PowerBook user go for the Apple menu with their trackpad and VWOOP! ... Real timesaver, that.

What happens when you mouse into any of the corners of the main display is configurable, including doing _nothing_. So if you find it a problem for you (or others) don't configure the corner response that way.

You also can configure keys to bring up Expose features, etc. if you don't like mouse corners.

    ...apple menu blah...

The Apple menu is on the left side of the menu bar. It provides system level / application independent items: About this Mac, Software Update..., Mac OS X Software..., System Preferences..., Dock submenu, Location submenu, Recent Items submenu, Force Quit..., Sleep, Restart..., Shutdown... and Logout...

The clock you are talking about is on the right side of the menu bar, so I don't see the relationship you imply in your reply.

Anyway clicking on the clock displays the full date. If you want to see another option let Apple know.

I hear 10.4 makes the corners clickable for the Apple menu and Sporlight.

Don't folks read posts all the way?

Just to clarify what is built into Mac OS X by default...

In Mac OS X, built into Mac OS X 10.4, you can trigger any of the following from any of the four corners of the main screen.

    1) Expose - All Windows
    2) Expose - Application Windows
    3) Expose - Desktop
    4) Dashboard
    5) Start Screen Saver
    6) Disable Screen Saver

Also on the main display (the one with the menu bar) you can slam the mouse into either of the upper two corners and click. On Mac OS X 10.4 the upper left corner brings up the "Apple" menu and the upper right corner brings up "Spotlight". The later allows typing for spotlight search without having to click to gain focus.

What's the point of HUGE icons????

You look at the referenced document?

It is to help support resolution independent UIs, ones that can display content on displays that have 150, 300, etc. DPI capabilities. Having access to a 256x256 bitmap for an icon gives the OS more pixels to play with if scaling up or down is needed in response to the current UI resolution setting.

  11. Tiger supports 256 x 256 Icons on Comparing Tiger and Vista Beta 1 · · Score: 4, Informative

Paul missed the fact that Tiger supports 256 x 256 icons as an extension to the existing icon data format.

Icon Services in Tiger has been extended to support icons that are 256 x 256 pixel in size. To support these larger icons, a new icon type selector has been added for you to use in calls to SetIconFamilyData and GetIconFamilyData. The selector is kIconServices256PixelDataARGB and is defined in IconStorage.h.

With SetIconFamilyData, a non-premultiplied 256x256 ARGB bitmap should be provided as input and IconServices will compress it before storing it in the ICNS container.

With GetIconFamilyData an uncompressed raw 256x256 ARGB bitmap is returned. The only difference is that the returned image contains the alpha channel where for the previously supported icon sizes there are 2 separate selectors: one for the mask and one for the data.

One outrageous incident was his arm-wrestling showdown with the CEO of Stevens Aviation in 1992. Both Stevens and Southwest were using the advertising tagline "Plane Smart." To settle the matter, Kelleher suggested an arm-wrestling competition with the winner keeping the rights to the slogan. Kelleher lost the match, but the event generated so much good will and publicity that Stevens let Southwest continue use of the tagline.

My personal funniest mishap was the day I learn ice cream and laser writers don't mix. I was about 12 at the time I think and we had just gotten a LaserWriter and Macintosh 512 at home.

I was working on my science fair project on that system (best darn looking presentation seen at a science fair in those days) while licking away at a vanilla ice cream cone I had (flat bottom cone). I set my cone down on the top of the printer and got distracted (when outside to play some bball I think).

I came back 2 hours later to find the ice cream cone had collapsed and done a noise dive into the paper feed area.

My parents well... ...lets just say from that day forth the printer always made a funny gear grinding sound but it still keep printing for several years until it was upgraded... about the time I was allowed to go outside and play again IIRC.

Seriously now... Apple will be releasing their first products based on Intel around the middle of next year. Apple knew/knows exactly what Intel plans to release in that time frame and likely far out into 2007 and 2008.

Apple made the switch because they had access to Intels private product road maps and IBMs product road maps (both fully under NDA). They liked Intels road map better and likely liked Intels pricing/deal better as well.
