I think that actually there are proportionally more fatalities from 110V mains because people don't feel the jolt so much, and it's amps that kill, not volts.

In Australia we have ~230-240V @10A to power sockets, 15A to lights. (It's supposed to be 230V but tolerance allows it to be up to 240V and historically we were 240V AFAIK)

After my first 240V 10A jolt I had to sit down for a while.

What's really dangerous is causing an arc: the arc flame could take a bit of your finger off and cauterise the wound. I once caused an arc by shorting active to earth with my screwdriver on an amp's power supply (yes, laugh, I was vague and had left the power on by accident). The flame made a small cut in the top of the screwdriver (it looks like it melt). Not nice.

    Hey dude,

I bought SFU on behalf of a company a few years ago when it was a charge-for product. It wasn't like MacOS-X my friend. It seemed a bit half-assed and cobbled together to tell you the truth. In it's defence however it's supposed to be 4.4BSD-Lite based software (correct me if i'm wrong).

Maybe it's a lot better now. I ought to download it sometime to check. The NFS client could be useful. I seem to recall sucky NFS behaviour though. I remember because NFS support was the reason we bought it. Sorry my memory is hazy over that one... so many other problems to deal with since then ;)

Of course, that was one of the guiding priciples behind Windows NT--a microkernel platform upon which several different standard OS APIs could be implemented.

Awesome! Pity that Windows is the least compatible platform on the planet with such a wonderful foundation to build on.

You're not familiar with the Tao of Linux ;)

It sounds like a worse situation than it is: it can depend on your perspective. There are often patches that float around and never get integrated but usually there's a good reason for that (code quality sucks, minimal testing, breaks other stuff, not conforming to kernel coding style).

Speaking of Kernel Coding Style, are you claiming that this is unimportant? Do you understand the concept that once a piece of code makes it into Linux then it's supposed to be maintainable by a group of people? You realise that the original maintainer of a piece of code is free to walk away at any time, so if they've used their own funky style the code will be obfuscated and unmaintainable?

Have a look at the recent discussion wrt inotify! It's an important feature for the desktop IMNSHO but core maintainers are sticking their noses up at it. Is this a bad thing? If you are more interested in the functionality than you are in the opinion that it's "Just Not Right Yet(tm)" then maybe. I'm really keen to see it in but I'm sincerely appreciative that Christopher Hellwig criticises and vetos the work until it conforms to his idea of aesthetics and sanity. CH can be a hard-liner but people like him, Andrew Morton and Al Viro raise the bar and push for quality. This is inarguably A Good Thing.

Anyway, mistakes happen, patches get ignored, people crack the sads, life goes on. Problems occur in commercial software development too. It's not time to ring the alarm bells.

    On your home machine?

We're talking about a client server here with all sorts of odd software dependencies and custom modifications. I've told them that addressing that would be beneficial. Upgrading software on this machine is security-critical but will break stuff and I'll have to fix it. That's cool: will do but it's less risky to apply updated packages individually rather than upgrade the OS. Think "rollback".

It means to be safe I'll probably do a fresh OS install on another hard drive and try migrating the services.
