Hello and thank you for visiting the Linux Expo homepage. For various reasons, there is no Linux Expo planned for the year 2000. This doesn't mean that after 5 years of hosting this event, we're walking away from a conference on Linux for techies. Instead, we're looking to make such an exposition even better. There are great happenings in the works so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
i bought one of these at a show a little after they came out - i was really looking forward to having two monitors.
then i found out that the 2nd head doesn't have great specs and since the XFree guys were moving to NVida in house, they probably won't write a driver for the 2nd head (i checked this w/ mandrake back in january on irc - and that's what he told me. if i'm wrong or inaccurate about his response, pls don't flame - i make a formal appology now - but that's what i remember him saying).
so - i moved to a 3dfx card so i could play unreal:)
Security definitely becomes an issue... the firewall on my cable modem averages 10+ probes per day.
heh - I get that many and more, and my machine is connected via a modem. seems to be ppl looking for open ports on a windows machine, file sharing and such.
Hey - I thought that was pretty good, but missing a few points here and there.
One thing that I would really like to see, but I don't think it will ever make it's way into the prequals is how Han saved Chewie, and got the Millenium Falcon ( i know it was gambling, but explain more)
That's something that I have always wondered about ever since the original trilogy and I'd like to see it worked in somehow.
it seems to me that at Expo RedHat had TWO parties with free alcohol...compared to SuSE's crappy one night with a line up a mile long to even see the one free keg. jeez.
Whoa - you're wrong there. I hung out quite a lot w/ "Stacey from LinuxExpo" - the tall blonde haired girl that was cooridinating the expo and asked why that party was such a shitty one.
It's *NOT* SuSE's fault. That party was supposed to be the same as the one at Jillian's but the resturtant/club where it was held fucked up.
They were charging ppl for everything, when it should have been free beer, wine, and soda till 9. By the time the blunder was realized, it was too late to do anything about it. That's why they made all those announcements in the begiing b/c The Warehouse (I think that was the place) was in error, not SuSE.
So - next time try and be a little more informed before you speak.:)
p.s. I wasn't all that impressed w/ Red Hat's private party either. As I recall, they ran out of beer and that punch stuff 1/2 way through the party. The canoli's (sp) were good though.
I liked TPM, and I also have my complaints about the film as well...but none of us are Lucas, and no one knows what he has in mind for the "bigger picture" (espisodes II & III).
I'm trying not to forget that when I look at all the flaws in the movie, and I keep hoping that things that appear to be flaws will be explained in future episodes.
If not - I'll be one of first in line to give my complaints on the entire prequal trilogy.
(lets try this again since I can't type today and keep smacking the wrong keys)
Note : I use "we" as a general pronoun here
What are we really accomplishing by having all these "helper" sites come online - especially when they have little or no content to them?
Wouldn't it make more sense (and maybe this is being done, but it needs to be publicized (sp) a bit better) to have all these ppl who are creating these sites pool their efforts and work on one big site?
Their intentions are definately good - but it's not acheiving the desired goal.
I know if I was a newbie user, I'd want to be able to look one place for all the hints, docs, etc that I needed, rather then having to visit numerous sites to find out one thing.
That's why sunsite was so great - b/c you could find a lot of what you were looking for in one place. But - it's not like that any more (at least I think)
We're trying to pursuade people to move over to linux as their OS of choice - but how easy are we making it for them with these "helper" sites that come on-line, but have no "help" in them.
I think that if everyone invested their time into one unified project, we'd have one helluva documentation/hints site on our hands.
Find a group of people to administer it, find a group to write the scripts (I'd help w/ that part myself), find people for "formalize" all the hints and documents that are submitted, and then put them online.
We're moving forward w/ providing documentation, but we're moving backwards as well.
Note : Again - remember that I use "we" as a general pronoun, and it doesn't necessarily refer to people who read this site - it's more of a linux population as a whole
they have purple links (grey once you visit them) on a black background. That's even harder to read.
I guess ppl don't think about these things when they create pages. I guess they don't look at them either.

Alas, it will be that way forever though. Look at classic cars. Who would have ever thought that some of the cars from the 60s would be worth what they are today.
Yeah, but at least their new versions don't require a ton of errata updates.
I find it very convinient (sp) for them to release new versions every 6 months. It's hard to d/l new packages and sources over a 56k modem, and there is a lot of easy w/ just having to update new packages.
Unfortunately for me, it's not quite that easy b/c I have to recompile all programs that use shadow password to make them compatabile w/ the kerberos system that I use (it's university specific) - but it doesn't take me that long to do.
I'd rather deal w/ that then trying to d/l the errata updates.
If you want more stable versions, you'd have to look for update packages or get the entire newer package.
I haven't quite figured out why SuSE does this. When they release the international version, everything is pretty much new and current.
But as soon as they ship the US version, it's all dated. 2.2.5 is shipping w/ 6.1 and we're up to 2.2.7. Granted, 2.2.7 was just release a couple days ago, so maybe that's not the best example, but you get the point.
I don't know why it takes them so long to ship the US version. Maybe it's not completely translated when the international version ships. I guess it would be a good thing to inquire about.
did the extrans to text break??

Wonder if there will be a patch or binary that will let ppl w/ the windows CD play it on linux w/o having to repurchase the game.
(alas, i have a copy from when i used to dual boot way back when...)
did you also notice that linux is shipped as the default operating system?? why would they need to list it as an option if it's default?
I must disagree - not everything they make is evil. They do produce very good mice.
heh - that's because they subcontract them out and just stamp them w/ the microsoft name.
Security definitely becomes an issue... the firewall on my cable modem averages 10+ probes per day.

too bad it probably wont
Who needs coffee when 3 Penguin Mints contain the same amount of caffine as a regular soda.
Not only will you be wired and able to withstand radiation, but your breath will smell good too.

here should never be only one solution available for a component as important as a browser.
what do you call Mozilla then?
not necessarily....you can create a "sandbox" like php does using a program called cgiwrap.
It runs all scripts as the user and not as root and/or nobody
found a job as a professional gamer. ;)
You know - that's an interesting thought. I wonder what it would be like to sit home all day, play games, and then sell your results.
I wonder if it would be possible to ever hate that job.
Thank you so much for pointing out that I am not a great speller and make grammatical errors.
That really has a lot to do w/ this post.
I wonder if these means that Dell is going to start supporting FreeBSD on their machines as well.
I realize it's still there, I just don't think it's as current and up-to-date as it needs to be

Actually - if you go to the site, the email link is tunelinux@vaughan.com
Perhaps this is a typo in the article?
heh - have you been to linuxwarez ??

My bad, I was grouping the German version in w/ the French, Dutch, etc releases.
