this is too damn funny. i used to work for the company that hosted (sorry, not gonna mention this b/c i know they read this site) this box. (they offered co-lo services as well as web hosting services, and this was a co-lo box.)
this guy was a fucking idiot! he had no place in at all running a linux box, let alone a web hosting business. i can't begin to even recall how many countless hours i spent fixing his scripts, programs, etc etc b/c he was too dumb to figure it out and i was "required to" by my job. (i fucking hated that w/ a passion - i can't stand it when i have to clean up other ppl's fuck-ups).
i'm surprised that it actually took this long for this to come up. i remember getting phone calls from his customers where i worked complaining about his service and the fact that he was never there.
ahh - if only this had happenned to the company i worked for. they are as big a set of idiots (well, most - i don't want to lump everyone into that category) as this guy is.
but aren't individual users the ones using hyperlinks and not ISPs? (we'll leave aside web pages that are *for* the isp).
doesn't this all just go back to content? and isn't it the users' content that has the hyperlinks? so why should the isp be sued for something that a user has on their page. hasn't it already been stated that isps are not resposnible for the content on their users' pages?
this is really dumb, but mildly amusing at the same time.
i had cablevision modem service for a while and i was really happy with it. they had some outages, but overall provided really good service.
the only bad things about them is that they're slow in deploying and they require a 2 year commitment to get the modem at a cheaper price (although this could have just recently changed since i subscribed). since i just moved, i'm back to ADSL until cablevision is ready to offer serice again. (under my contract, i'm obligated to resume service or i pay a termination fee).
i'm looking forward to the service again. they didn't block ports, proxy, or anything. since they have pretty long dhcp leases and i never shut off the modem, i even pointed a real domain name there.:)
i had bell atlantic (in nj) as soon as it came out in my area. i think i pissed the ppl off b/c every time they gave me a launch date and missed it, i was on the phone raising hell.
i really didn't have many complaints with them except when their routers went down. it happenned a lot the first month when the service was new, and then became pretty infrequent.
some guy came out to run a splitter for the dsl and he was there on time on the promised date. the whole thing about bell coming out to the poll is a farce. they just have to flip a switch in the office and the signal is sent to your phone. now that they have those line filters, you don't even need anyone to come into your house. plug the modem in, and all normal phones to into the line filters and you're good to go.
a lot of ppl at work wanted bell(verizon) and i know they were delayed b/c of the strike, but there really should be no reason they should be that back logged. they ship you the modem, all the rest is a flip of a switch.
then i moved and couldn't get dsl, so i switched to cable modem. now i'm moving again, and i can't get a cable modem, so i don't know what to do. i find it hard to believe that union city, nj can't get high speed access being 15 mins away from nyc. cablevision tells me november, but they are idiots too. i don't think it's worth it to go back to dsl only to want to leave again for the cable modem. i'm tired of spending money on hardware.
i'd recommend bell b/c i didn't have many problems w/ them.
how exactly would they know if someone had a VPN going on or not?
all traffic that is masqed looks as if it's coming from the connected machine, so how are they going to know if the traffic i'm generating is coming from my "legit" machine, or from my laptop that is on my private network?
"Also people complain about cd costs. I recently went to a friends gig and picked up two cds of her work which were 5 pounds for 3 tracks??? Why, because she had to record and produce them herself, although she didn't need to pay for recording time due to her job she still had to put a lot of time and effort into them."
that's not really a good arguement (what does 5 pounds equal in US?) - record companys can MASS PRODUCE cds very easily and how much do you think it costs them? not much in such large quantities.
while your friend OTOH is only making a few cds and thus her production costs are higher, which would mean she needs to charge more.
not to mention that the artists aren't really the ones making any money on the cds - most of their income comes from concerts, etc.
so - to compare your friend with a large record company does not make for a good arguement.
so why not lobby the "big guys" for some help? i'm sure that lycos, et al have just as much to loose, if not more then the "little guys" - so why not go to them for help.
if they helped to defend the "little guys" and won - then they would already have the backing they'd need if they were the next ones sought after.
well - one would have to believe in God and Satan in order for the "Devil's views have taken a hold of them". if you look at this from a true Catholic standpoint, everything is a sin against God and we are all destine for hell.
but in the end, there is no manipulation. the ppl that are a part of the porn industry do so by a conscience choice. if they feel that they have a hot body and can make money from flaunting it, more power too them.
there is porn for women as well, you do realize that don't you? does this mean that by your statements that men are also exploited and fed lies by the industry?
both sexes know exactly what's involved when they do this. (hrm, i'm gonna make this arguement using women, but i'd assume the same could be applied to men).
do you really think that women don't know that they are being looked at and talked about when they go out to clubs, etc wearing practially NOTHING? they know exactly what's going through mens' heads - would you say they are degrading themselves at that point as well?
if they didn't want to be stared, oggled, fantasized about, or whatever, then they wouldn't dress that way to begin with. there's a line from the movie swingers which sums this up perfectly, and unfortunately i can't think of it this morning. (i knew i should have watched it last night)
the same holds true for porn. both sexes know exactly what they are getting involved with when they decide they want to be a part of the industry.
you can continue to think it's immoral if that's how you feel, but by no means are ppl being victomized or degraded by any means.
actually - the latest nightlies (for some time now) have stopped asking you to create a profile when you launch mozilla and there is no.mozilla in your home directory.
although - your there is still the "default" directory w/in the.mozilla directory that has all your preferences in it.
i would guess that they are moving away from preferences on the *nixes now that you're no longer prompted to create a profile
actually - i think popup windows are working correctly. all the sites that i visit w/ them work properly.
it still has some issus w/ javascript linked off pulldown menus - and i'm not sure if that's a mozilla issue or the site issue. (it's http://www.tvguide.com - check out daily listings and try and change teh time w/ the pulldowns)
I've tried them out at a couple of Circuit City stores, and all the ones I've seen have the menu. BTW, all the stores I went to said they don't normally display the Apex (even though they've been running newspaper ads nationally for at least a month) and that you have to ask to see one or buy one.
this wasn't in new jersey was it? i tried to by one over the weekend and they only had the display model left and they told me that according to state law - if they sell something - they have to display it. luckily - i found another circuit city that had them - when i called for quantity they had 5 - and hour later when i got there - there were 3 left and they were all bought before i left (me, my roommate and some other guy)
that's b/c the server is located in new jersey (parsippany to be exact). see my post further down for more info. :)

DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK!!! it goes to goatse.cx. *shudder*

sorry, but my vote has to go to maxim magazine's endorced candidate Andrij!!!!

well, since i haven't seen this yet, i can't refuse posting (there goes my karma)....
i want to patent petrifing natalie portman with hot grits, in addition to the method used to pour hot
grits down one's own pants.

cancel bid rules here
cancle auction rules here.
just read over on aint-it-cool-news (yeah yeah, i know) - but they are dispelling the rumor and have backed it up by calling Lucas publicity.

actually - it's not, b/c if i have VCDS or break a DVD case, i can just use the ones that the AOL cds come in.
it's a great way to get free cases

pine would be nice if it had a graphical client as well. zmail did well in that aspect (although i never used it but ppl who did liked it)
yeah - it's called the apex 600a dvd player, and supposedly circuit city has now pulled them from their shelves. they claim it's being discontinued.
according to the latest crutchfield catalog, kenwood has released one as well.
Kenwood Z919
although, it's about $350 more then the aiwa(299.95) and 649.95 for the kenwood (probably cheaper at places other then crutchfield)

just to point this out to everyone - the Sullivan skin is nice - but it's not very functional at the moment.
the bookmarks are not "linked" in yet - so there is no way to access or change any thing you may currently have.
you wouldn't want to make the linux build available now would you?
