  1. Disappointing on Samsung's Galaxy Tab Android Tablet Now Official · · Score: 1

I wish these android folks would come up with a BETTER design than Apple. This looks like a smaller version of the iPad. Maybe the next few generations will get better as we're seeing in the Android phone space. Some of the new handsets are actually nicer (but not by much) than the iPhone 4.

  3. Updated Ship Dates on MacBook Pros Upgraded and Shipped · · Score: 1

I have a feeling this has more to due with supply of chips. If you check out the Apple Store, the ship times for a 1.83GHz is 2-3 weeks, the ship times for a 2.0 GHZ machine is 1-3 days! I have a feeling they got a boatload of these 2.0 GHZ processors from Intel to meet all the back-logged demand.

  4. Hardware Sales? on Apple Surpasses Dell's Market Value · · Score: 1

I think what's interesting is that with the move to Intel, it really opens the door for a whole new market for Apple computers. Previously, if you bought a Mac - you bought a Mac. You're locked into Mac software, games, etc.

With these new machines - you've still bought a Mac - but I guarantee by 2007 you'll be able to dual boot with Windows. Apple says they won't stop people from doing that - so what's stopping people in 2007 from buying a Mac and just running windows. They're basically making their market the ENTIRE computer audience where before you were limited to Mac OS, Linux, Unix (Windows on VPC is barely usable).

Like the iPod - people LOVE Apple hardware - both Mac and Windows users. If I were an analyst looking at Apple I would see a HUGE upside on their hardware sales.

Q: What is the future of Apple Computer?
    A: Silicon Graphics.

    Q: That bad?
A: Maybe it's a little bit different. But if you look at proprietary computer companies, whether it's Digital or Silicon Graphics (SGI ) or Apple (AAPL ), I think the fates are all relatively similar. We know how the movie ends. It's just a question of what happens in the middle. Apple has a very little customer base. If you look at the economics, it has been extremely hard for Apple to get a return on its R&D with a shrinking volume base. It's not to say that Apple's products aren't innovative or cool, but the economic factors here are so overwhelming, it's very hard for them to swim against that tide.

Q: If you were running Apple, is there anything you could do to change that?
A: I would never take that job.

How is this different from someone on Saturday Night Live singing a Eminem song? Do they pay him every time they make fun of him?

What about the other artist covers they do? I don't understand how this is any different. Both are for commercial use - Apple is using the cover to sell iPods, SNL is using it to sell TV ads.

There's a lot of ways to cut up a business model. Sure, Apple doesn't make money on each song sold in the iTMS, but that's not the only revenue generator - i.e. the iPod, branding, etc.

The same is true for the other folks like Napster. There are other revenue streams that can be calculated in the business model. And as we all know - there's more than one way to solve a problem.
Maybe they have side deals with other companies, maybe they have different contracts with payment companies, with record companies, etc.

Just because Apple can't make money on iTMS - doesn't mean it won't work for others.

I can use my cellphone as a wireless modem to the internet without any cables. I dial from the laptop using the "bluetooth modem" my cellphone connects and I'm on the internet regardless of where I am. I'm only limited by my cell coverage.

No more expensive hotel phone calls or data fees, if I'm doing work somewhere with no hotspots, I can still check e-mail, etc. If you're a business traveler, this is such a boon - no cables, no confusing configs, it just works and it works well.

Bluetooth is not dead - companies are just beginning to use it to its potential. With Apple (not surprisingly) leading the way.

I'm in Manhattan on the east side and we got power back around 3:30 p.m. almost down for 24 hours. Apparently, the outer boroughs got power back earlier - this morning. Then the upper west side got power back, but it was spotty - some guy on the radio was saying, "there's power on 57th St and 10th Ave, but no power on 57th St and 9th Ave, and power on 57th and Broadway, etc." Anyway, it's apparently spotty on the upper east side, but if I've got power back it's over (for me). :-)

    Some low points:
    - Walking down 25 flights in the office building was a bitch
    - Walking up 16 flights to get home using candles for light was worse.
    - Eating everything in my fridge was gross.
    - It was hot last night, so I didn't sleep much
    - Still no cable TV
    - Phone is spotty at best.

    Some high points:
    - With no electricity, I actually read a frickin book, until the sun set.
    - Fortunately had a number of candles so hanging out by candle light was nice
    - I actually saw the stars in the NY sky - a first.
    - it was quite a nice evening last night, very quiet and peaceful.

I think New Yorkers took it in stride. I could see a lot of people just hanging out and taking it as a day off. No panic, nothing crazy. Some guy in the building across from me was having a barbeque and handing out food to his neighbors.

Watching traffic was funny. With no traffic lights, it's was a battle between cars and pedestrians. Mostly people won out. Everyone was very civilized.

    Anyway, back to checking e-mail.

Apple needs to get iTunes for Windows out ASAP before all these jokers - buymusic, napster 2, etc. ruin the legal music buying experience for everyone.

    2. limited downloads - from the site The number of allowable download and transfers to other computers owned by you and registered with the Site. - again ridiculous, so if I upgrade my computer 3 times, again I've lost my music.

I notice that the limits change from song to song, but after a certain point in time through the natural progression of technology user's are going to lose the use of any musci purchased on buymusic.com.

I think the point being missed here is that Apple is a company made up of many groups. There's Apple hardware and Apple software.

Just like any business Apple software probably treats the video editing market as a business opportunity... that is - look at the environment, evaluate competitors and decide to enter the market if you can sustain a competitive and profitable advantage.

When they bought FCP from Macromedia, I'm sure they knew what they were doing. Premiere was already out on the Mac so they knew they were entering into competition with Adobe. Think of the FCP at Apple as Macromedia. Two software developers competing in a market.

That's all there is to it. No conspiracy theories, etc. Apple is just about to make money like everyone else.

And how do you know that exactly? Lets say this glowing fish some how gets out in the wild. Maybe because it glows it can see a certain food source better, or attract small shrimp - making it easier to feed on some other animals main food source. Sure it may get eaten by another creature, but it will disrupt the balance of an eco-system.
The consequences are unknown because there are too many variables. What if this zebrafish is the main diet of some larger fish. Now that it has some glowing gene, what are the side-effects to the fish that eats it? Maybe there's some chemical that causes some problem with the larger fish. Again another disruption to the eco-system.
    This goes on and on...

In the end... GM animals will get in the wild, you'll never be able to control it once it's in the hands of a consumer.

Yes, the company I used to work for proved it. We ran the website for a magazine. In a corporation where all other web-properties lost money, we were completely profitable.

The book is right, it's about the architecture from the ground up. If you design it right with flexibility for growth, tech resources (a cost center to the business) are very low.
If you build the right tools for your users to manage the site, people spend more time doing their job than wrestling with the technology.

On top of that we didn't even sell products. Pure ad-based business. We designed a flexible ad management system to serve any ad anywhere in any position. Gave sales more to sell and made clients happy.

    It can be done.
