    By Governments, I read this as all Government that use the product. How about only sharing with the governments that protect your home?

    Perhaps it be better to only use products that you can read and write the code your self. Should we keep the code under government control? would we be safer if We stoped the black box types of software.

    This is no more high tech then your cell phone. Give me a break.

    Lets see two cell phones on the side of the road. One pictures your tag number and sends it with its GPS location to the next phone. There your Tag number is compared and the new GPS location.

    You would get better distance traveled if you took reading off of the patrol car's odometer for the distance traveled traveled.

    Using GPS is low balling the distance. and thus underestimating your speed.

    Its not going to be the case that IBM is going to have to do much to enforce bogus patents. Free source people to not have the cash to pay for the court battles. Only the threat is needed.

    Software needs to be rewritten from time to time. So get a Free OS and GCC and start translating. If nothing else it will be a much needed code review.

    First the FCC needs to find some channels that it has not all ready sold. Then it would be nice of them to give the bandwidth to the people.

    No point in buying cellphones unless there is a way to use them.

    The roof top routers that make the short range of cell phones work can have an emergency over ride, much like the old TV bands use to allow. You know the test that are run from time to time.

    I have the right to buy a gun. I want the right to put a router on my roof with the range, 4 to 7 miles, to be useful.

    We have seen that poring money at the industry telecommunications has not worked.

    This will give me free local, +-100 mile range, cell phone / texting / email. It will also level the field for ISP's so that there can be 100's not 1 or 2 in any given area.

    15 years ago Apple computer asked for part of the spectrum that would provide many 10Mbit channels, in a design for a metropolitan area.

    Ya I have to pay for hardware, and power. I have to hope other people will do the same. I will perhaps want to pay an ISP.

    Ya, its not free, but I bet its a lot less then that people pay now.

    Its long over due for the FCC to give us this Right. And to define fare use, so that compliant hardware can be built to deliver the last mile to the consumer.

    We are talking, Free as in freedom of speech

    Not as in your free to read for me in the city square.

    It is currently Illegal for me to put a
    Cell Phone Router on my roof.

    It is legal for me to go out and buy a gun.
    It is not legal for me to shoot you with it.
    There have to be Rules to make a Wireless
    Network Grid Work. And until the FCC gives up
    the spectrum and makes the rules, hardware can not
    be built and I can not join in to the free open cell phone network.
    Yes you could text and get e-mail too so how much do you pay
    for e-mail, and phone?

    Sure the network is not completely free.
    And there will be people that will use it
    without putting up a router. But then if your
    out or your routers range, you will want to use
    other peoples routers as well.
    It a matter of being civicly-responsible.

    The parent ether has no clue, or works for
    IPS or a cell phone carrier. Reading on
    other posters also simple don't understand how the Internet works, and that a grid of
    roof top routers can and will ( when its legal ) replace low bandwidth comumications
    like cell phone carriers. Well perhaps not
    as a foot ball game. Of in a harbor tunnel.
    But most any place you can see a roof top
    you should get coverage. We are talking ranges of 5 to 10 miles.

    NOw that that is said when will the FCC
    put out the standards of fair play so the hardware can be built for my "Roof Top Router"
    So I to can get free local cell phone calling and connect to 100s of viable local ISP's for the long hall.
    Sure at first I will only have 5 or 10 miles
    range, but as others figure it our the grid will grow and fill in.

    As for monitoring why would any one care, if I call my Mom or a friend and ask if I can stop over. Or that I had a flat tire...

    Oh and if it was true that I was planing a crime, please monitor me.

    The result, your content scanned in seconds not hours or days.

    I mean there is no source code and no environment for code maintenance/instllation provided. It the clue less that think binary software has any "soft" left. You might as well call it trashware.

    How can someone even call this a computer, It more a "Virus Hive" or at best a "Toaster". Its designed to sell you more software. Just like a Toaster is designed to sell you bread. Is Microsoft box all that useful without more software? It can't even make toast.

    Don't go thinking you can read the web with a blank Microsoft box. You have to buy access to that as well. An there are many cheaper things that will get you to the web you payed for.

    Its like Jay Leno, now that people have changed the channel and seen Dave Letterman its going to be hard going back.

    One wonders why we are still using a Micro system software when we are in the super computer age.

    One day people will change the channel and discover The 'X' windows system and Linux there will be no going back. Leno on the other hand may have a chance. Microsoft on the other hand is obsolete. only its money sustains it.

    Where do you go that there is not a roof top with in 5 miles. But if all the Radio bandwidth is sold to the "MAN" There is none left for "The People" remember the people?

    Not only have the TelCo's been getting free money. The FCC did not allow the People, remember "The People", to build a Wireless mesh network. This should have started 15 years ago. We lost out on the roof top network that would have solved many problems.

    Now what in the world do people want 100Mbs lines for? I could watch what 50, more?, movies at the same time.

    My Verizon line is 0.5Mbs. That all they can manage just two miles from the City Switch. I can watch web cams, listenn to Internet radio stations.

    Root top radio Internet can link houses from 5 to 7 miles away to be routed to the next station. Ending up at ISP's. not 1 or 2 but 10's and 100's of providers. The bandwidths are in the Gigahertz not Megahertz.

    Voice only needs 0.05Mbs. Email and Texting Ha. too many zeros to type.

    Under the GPL you can sell your product. as long as you transfer all the rights with it under the GPL.

    If MySQL was not under the GPL at the time shame on Monty, if MySQL was under the GPL, then the joke is on Sun for paying so much for a copy of MySQL. And Oracle has all the rights of any other user of MySQL under the GPL.

    Given that Oracle says they intend to continue releasing MySQL under the GPL. Grab a copy While you can. And you can maintain your version. I do not believe the GPL part of what ever product Oracle produces can take away the rights of others to the sources. and the GPL rights.

    Its this basic protection that the GPL was written in the first place.

    When this Country was created and you wanted to share your views and exercise your freedom of Speech you went to the town square and spoke. This was what free speech was all about.

    Where is the town square in the 21st Century?
    Where do we share our views?

    Why Its right here at shashdot. Yes its on the Internet.

    Now we pay the ISP's for Speech. Thats not the Free we should be talking about. The ISP's want to block traffic they do not like, traffic that does not make them cold cash, we have to watch this closely.

    The founding fathers could not have invisioned that speech would stray into the gigahertz bands. But if they had, Some of that bandwidth would have been by law given to the people. Other parts reserved for the public good, like the military and fire/police etc. Come to think of it, a working radio infrastructure would also be useful to the fire/police.

    We should have the right to own the infrastructure. We should have the right to put a radio router on our roof. And share the connectivity. We are talking 300 megabit channels, in the GigH. frequency ranges. How many places do you go where there is not a house with in 5 miles. Its like a Gun, you have to buy it and buy ammo. The same is true for a radio router, You have to buy it and feed it electricity. But we should have the right. Not be ignored by the FCC for the good of the duopoly's/monopoly's.

    A radio last milewould give ISP's a level playing field And There could then be 100s not 1 or 2 ISP's to provide backbone connections. It might even be better if the backbone was public as well. Its infrastructure like the Highways. It can make or break this country.

    I live two miles from the city switch. and all I can get is a stink'in DSL.

    I am sorry the FCC needs to rethink House top routers and put the "last mile providers" out on the street, unless the people with the wires can offer something better.

    House top routers would for sure make your cell phone time charges obsolete. You would be better off paying up front for your hardware and not some inflated plan for air minutes.

    Its time to enter the 21st century.
