    How do you know Big Brother isn't already subsidizing anti-malware programs, which are a great place for a back door for Big Brother. Perhaps scan for VIP keywords, use some voice/face recognition with the microphone and camera, send off some UDP packets (or hide amid SSL traffic) to Big Brother's computers with interesting news....

    OTOH, with Echelon and sisters, perhaps such efforts are gilding the lily.

    I want more nuclear power plants. Safe nuclear power plants. No CO2.

    Local nuclear power means no shipping refined products to burn in generators (with many resulting accidents as well as CO2 production.

    Heck, nuclear power ships could be used in disasters and a host of other opportunities.

    I thought that the child porn law was there to protect the child involved, not to victimise them further.

    But why have separate computers running those expensive apps? Why not xwindow (or windows terminal) into any expensive applications which can run on dual quad speedsters with 16GB RAM? Fewer licenses, faster apps, and you can save the info on your laptop. tOM

    You may even want to record these conversations. This is legal in many places (since you consent) - tho not in all. Smartphones, PDAs, and cellphones can often do this unobtrusively.

    There are physical limits set by the physics of optics, at least with a single lens & exposure. The smaller the lens, the less sharp.

    After 35 years, I'm still using my Aluminum Halliburton Zero briefcase, with a couple of layers of firm foam inside. Despite falling off my bike a few times, and a couple of replacements of the cheap (but nice-looking) chromed zinc clasps, it still can be stood on with no damage to anything.

    It's still the only hard briefcase I know which can comfortably protect laptops up to 12x17x3.5"with padding all around while looking space-age.

    Call me old-fashioned. tOM

    1. It would be good to share, for a paper, both all the data as well as the conclusions on the web. Then the reasoning is easier to check. More importantly, other people can query the data differently to produce other conclusions without special requests.
    2. "Reproduceability" doesn't mean using the same data, it means using the same procedures on different data and seeing if the same conclusion is reached.
    3. If data were commonly provided as experiments are done, this would be of value to others even if the experimenters' paper(s) came later. In other words, as well as the market for articles, a market for data!

    Agree completely.

    These devices cause unconscionable wideband interference with shortwave ham and broadcast reception. If someone traces it to you (not hard) and complains, you have to stop using them.

    Since a lot of nice services come from low-level satellites, like Hubble and Iridium, why not a multi-nation effort to clean space up?
    Maybe an aerogel to slow small stuff, maybe strong magnets to drag metal down, maybe a smart satellite with a laser to zap stuff on the front, causing slowing, maybe ...
    The sooner we get started, the more debris can be cleaned.
    Question: If NASA tracks everything, why no warning of the Iridium/Kosmos impact? Iridium, at least, could have steered away.
