Sorry, but screw that. I'd rather only buy it once. I can't listen to a song more than once at a time. I can't watch video more than once at a time (only one TV per room and none to PIP, not even my "fancy" projector)

  4. I CAN'T use MS Office. on Does ODF Have a Future? · · Score: 1

Other than diehard Linux fans, does anyone really care if they have to keep paying Microsoft to do basic word processing?

At work I have Solaris and Linux workstations. I do not have a Windows PC. If I'm working on documentation, MS Word is not even an option. Nor is Excel. It's not possible. OK, I still don't use ODF much because our Solaris install that I could use until very recently was version 1.1.something, and only in recent weeks do I have access to 2.0.4. I've only had my Linux box for a few days now, and that seems to be version 1.1.5. I'm not an admin, I don't get to choose or install what I want. If they're phasing out the antique Solaris boxes (I have an Ultra 5 which is one of the better ones) then I'm also losing that 2.0 version of OpenOffice and the ability to use ODF files until our admin sees fit to give us a newer version. I've been using this antique Solaris box for 8 years and only last week got a Linux box. I don't imagine them spending money to give me a Windows box to run Office, and I'm also running out of room on my desk. I very much hope to get a newer OpenOffice version for Linux so I can do ODF.

I think this would be great. Not because I want to run OSX software on Linux, but because I want an open-source thing like this that could be ported elsewhere. I'm an Amiga fan. AmigaOS currently runs on PowerPC. I'd love to be able to run some of that PowerPC MacOSX software out there on AmigaOS. So an open-sourced Mac API wrapper for Linux comparable to Wine I think would be a cool thing.

Currently I run my OSX software on my iBook using OSX.I'm still a little bit sane. :)

Excellent point of view. But this is Slashdot, and the Slashdot masses will flame amyone who chooses the "wrong" alternative OS. Any time AmigaOS comes up, the Slashdot masses flame it outright. Slashdot does not allow me the choice you define there. Why should any other "wrong" alternative be any more acceptable?

I don't get why people would like this. I hate renting. I want to buy it and be done with it, not be on the hook to continually pay and pay and pay forever even after the purchase price has been met multiple times over. I hate cable co boxes. I currently do not have any of them. I dont want one. I'll be stuck with one soon when I get FIOS, but I'd rather own it. I may buy this Tivo HD to replace it, especially since it's a lot cheaper than the Series 3. I own my cell phone. I need to buy a new one because it sucks and I can't use it at home, but it's mine. I would never lease a car, and don't understand why anyone does. I think it's rediculous. I just bought a new car a month ago. It's financed, so it'll take a few years to truely be "mine", but there ain't no lease manager telling me what I can and cannot do with the car. It's my car, I do what I wish with it, drilling holes, swapping interior, adding soundproofing (lotsa road noise), add an aftermarket nav system (Wasn't available from manufacturer with one), it's mine.

  14. renting preferred over buying equipment?? on The Trouble With TiVo · · Score: 1

And most people prefer to rent, not own, a set-top.

Why is this? The HD DVR box from FIOS is $20/month. Tivo's new HD DVR is $300. That's 15 months of renting. After 15 months, the renter buys the box again. The Tivo guy is done. OK, it's hard to say how any guide fees compare or if the cable co rally even has such a fee or if it's just part of the digital cable system to see what's on with any set-top unit from the cable co, DVR or not. Either way, in 15 months, I'd rather be paying $12 or $14 or whatever the Tivo guide fee is than $20 to continue buying the same cable co box again and again. Cheaper is cheaper, even with a $3 cablecard for that tivo. Maybe not by much, but it's a small savings.

Is there actually research that says people would rather rent this equipment than buy it? If so, are the reasons for that available from surveys?

I'm not sure I'd have been happy paying $60 for it though.

I "can afford" to buy games at $60. I just don't think they're worth that much. Not even the ones I like. So I'm choosing not to.

  19. Verizon does not rate signal reception on Where In the US Can You Get Just a Cell Phone? · · Score: 1

I've asked Verizon a few times for advice on buying a new phone that would have better signal reception than my LG9800 AKA "The V", as I can't use it at home. Each time I was told that Verizon does not have such information. The best I can do is randomly buy phones, and if I'm not hapy with then return them in 30 days, randomly buy another one, lather rinse, and repeat until I by chance find a phone that works. So in terms of finding a phone with good reception, Verizon is apparently not able to help anyone. But do avoid the LG9800, as my personal experience with it is that it has both poor reception and poor battery life. The expensive battery upgrade to 2100mAh capacity helps, but the original battery sould still last longer than a day. I assume it does not because of the poor signal and it's always scanning for a tower when I'm at home which burns through the battery. I'd also like to make signal reception and battery life as the two only details in choosing my next phone, and hoepfully another poster will have better info on Verizon phones, as other carriers don't have any service at all for blocks away from my Sister's house and such, part of why we switched to Verizon, but for my own I may say screw it to the free Verizon to Verizon calling and bail out to something that will actually work at all at my own house. My roommates with Tmobile, Cingular, etc. don't seem to have problems like my phone does, so it's either my phone or Verizon's towers at fault...
