One would think that the BSA could use this to their advantage. Among their demographic, hackers have better public opinion than boy scouts.
Kid: Yeah, I'm here for the scouts. I brought my laptop.
Scoutmaster: Welcome, here's your manual of how to tie knots, a pamphlet on why you should always vote republican, and your assigned times to go to church! Watch out for the troop leader of group 40. Lets just say you'll need your pocket knife for more than carving bears.
Kid: Wait... what?
The thing about discussing good vs evil, even "lesser of evils" is it necessarily separates things into black and white. This is not really useful for me in a world of greys. Is there a "good" alternative you know of? Because if not, then "the least of evils" should just be redefined as "good."
GOG and other DRM free sites are fine, but they're not really in the same category for most games.
As opposed to an open system that does NOT allow you to buy games through steam? It sounds like you'll be able to buy things through other sytems, say Origin, GOG, et cetera. You can put games you've bought through other services into steam, and they say you can do whatever you want with them. So you have no cause to think that it will be locked into steam.
Also, news flash, most people are not theologically opposed to DRM! Most people accept DRM if it doesn't cause problems most of the time! If you have problems with Steam's specific DRM, that's one thing, but if it's simply "STEAM IS DRM THEREFORE STEAM IS AN ABOMINATION BEFORE GOD!" then you are a moron, and I'm happy that you're missing out on so many games.
No, moron, we're not all supportive of the DEA. The tide is rapidly turning against the drug war (rapid compared to how long it's been going on, not rapid compared to "hey, how about we legalize drugs right now, all opposed? You're idiots and don't get to vote"). And it's not the arguments that they publicly make that I'm concerned about. That's just PR. They can argue "Xenu wants information on your medical history to be free!" for all I care.
Furthermore, this probably isn't related to our paranoia. Oregon has legalized medical marijuana. I'm going to assume this isn't about fighting terrorism so much as it is relating to the government wanting to know who is taking medical marijuana so they can make more arrests and send more "criminals" to perform slave labor for their campaign donors in the private prison industry.
That said, thank you for the reminder that I need to donate again to the EFF and ACLU.
Slashdot's moderation/metamod system is BADLY broken. The site survives because it has unusually intelligent commenters overall; not because moderation is working.
You assume the moderation system and the average intelligence of the commenters are independent of each other. I disagree. I suspect the awkward moderation system helps to keep the, er, non-nerds away.
More than that, it's incomprehensible even before you go abreviating it as IoT. I suppose "Putting electronics online when there's little point to putting them online, like your coffee maker" or simply "buzzword for getting venture capital" is less impressive sounding though.
That's a bit like complaining that the only music that gets made is crappy pop music aimed at preteens. That's only the stuff that is most heavily advertised, that makes its way TO you, and the only reason large entertainment industries are pushing that is because it's the most sure-fire way to get a return on their investment. There is still a hell of a lot of other music being made. There are a hell of a lot of other games being made. Most of them however are not advertising on the sides of busses.
Disclaimer: I really love those big name FPS AND that crappy pop music, so perhaps I'm biased and have questionable taste. If Taylor Swift ever has a hand in making the next call of duty, I'm totally there. I'm not even joking. And yes: I'll turn in my nerd card now.
It's legacy was that people enjoyed it intensely for a game or two, then wanted something else. Same as guitar hero. The novelty isn't the only thing either game had going for it, they were both well made, it's just not something you want to play forever.
People hate on hipsters and their musical preferences, but I find videogame hipsters to be the most annoying.
Not only teenage boys like shooters. And if you're right, then that only goes for AAA titles from big studios. Where are the myst-like games from indie developers?
Indeed, I thought the real revolutionary part of Myst was "Hey, so good graphics look nice." I didn't think anyone thought that there would be a flood of games where you explored islands created through books.
You might try "playing" "Dear Esther." It's not a game and it's very very short, but it struck me as the most Mysty, er, program I've encountered since Riven.
I typically use yelp on my phone when I'm on vacation or in a new place to find out what's nearby. Local papers are also going to be skewed by bribes and biases. Taking a chance is not really something I want to do. I'm cheap. I don't eat out much: I'm not going to sample ALL the resturaunts even in my city, so why not just sample the best ones? I also like that I can show only cheap restaurants. Just because I'm cheap doesn't mean I don't prefer good food. It's not all about service quality. In fact, I don't care about service. And the recommendations for what to eat at a resturaunt have been good to me in the past. I could and do ask the staff what they recommend, but often they're too timid to actually suggest anything. I get a lot of "Uh, what do you like?"
Look at it this way: if the reviews are so arbitrary, then how is yelp not picking a place at random?
I don't think an oath changes the ethics of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, Israel actually had nuclear weapons. The closest thing to a legitimate purpose of nuclear weapons is deterrence, which requires everyone knowing you have them. Nuclear weapons that are secret would only have one purpose: to murder lots of civilians of another country, out of revenge or ethnic cleansing.
Yes I see the differences: Vanunu's actions were greater.
In Georgia? Unknown. Officer Myers ticketed the research team that tried to quantify deaths due to texting while stopped at red lights. They probably shouldn't have been in their cars while doing the research.
Did you read what the Israelis did to him? Perhaps the society was worried what Mossad would do to them if they highlighted Israel's human rights violations and developing nuclear weapons. I mean, they're STILL punishing that guy, and they are our "allies." It's much safer to criticize Iran, you know the government isn't going to cooperate with Iran to punish you for it. Israel?
There was some concern about the effects of weightlessness. I mean, it's a constant on earth, it makes sense that animals would have used it for some developmental signal. My thesis adviser worked on a collaboration between soviet scientists and US scientists in the 80s, testing if there were any effects on incubating and hatching eggs in microgravity.
Evidently the most interesting result to come out of that study was that quail embryos preserved in vodka are not easy to section for microscopy. Paraformaldeyhde and other fixatives commonly used to study embryology are really dangerous if they can just float around and get in your eye, so the cosmonauts used vodka.
I think everyone is expecting the second to be steambox. The third is the real mystery. They already have a gaming network. The most likely sounding guess I've heard so far is that it will be a multiplayer game. Left 4 dead 3 (Left 4 D3ad?) maybe?
I'm hoping there will be an announcement about Half life 3. I haven't heard a good reason to be optimistic about that, but I hope it nonetheless.
How many AAA titles aren't available through steam? It seems like only the newest AAA titles from EA are exclusive to origin, though I'm sure EA is wanting to remove them all if they haven't already.
Furthermore, if steamboxes really take off, allowing Origin to run on them might be the best option for EA, if Steam allows it or is forced to allow it. Making their own version of steambox seems ludicrous given the quality of origin so far. So much so that I expect even the executives at EA would realize that would be a bad idea. Giving up on the PC market altogether seems comparably stupid. Giving up origin and going back to steam would be a defeat.
You basically acknowledge that how well it works is what matters. Steam isn't saying "This is a totally unprecedented thing we've done with the in home streaming." They're not claiming novelty.
I'm not sure shutting down the NSA is the best option. Certainly a better option than "change nothing aside from promising you won't spy on citizens again," but it's probably still a bad idea to be so rash. And in the event that it is just closed, some other organization would just pick up right where they left off. Though I guess it's naive to assume that's not already happening.
One would think that the BSA could use this to their advantage. Among their demographic, hackers have better public opinion than boy scouts.

GOG and other DRM free sites are fine, but they're not really in the same category for most games.
Why is this a gamechanger? We already had a videogame playing system that was upgradeable like a PC. It's called "A PC."
As opposed to an open system that does NOT allow you to buy games through steam? It sounds like you'll be able to buy things through other sytems, say Origin, GOG, et cetera. I'd need a day before I felt that I actually knew enough to start buying rather than just THINKING I knew enough.
No, moron, we're not all supportive of the DEA. Duh: sneak in and replace it with decaf!

Plus, theoretically you may only get one sale off of this, but your competitors get zero.
