I mean, WTF? this is the bloody internet for dogs sake, there are more countries in the world than the US! A large percentage of slashdot readers are not in the US. You would think they would realize that Slashdot has a worldwide audience.
You would think it all the time you've been on/., you would have bothered to read the FAQ at least once.
I'm not sure what relevance that study has to your point. Yes, young children mimic adult actions almost mindlessly. I doubt many kids aged 3 to 6 are playing the violent video games the GP was talking about, his anecdote sounded more like a story from being a teenager.
He said that if you do a Ubuntu 9.10 > 10.04 upgrade, the result looks very different from a fresh 10.04 install... even if you made no tweaks to the original 9.10.
That has been my experience, as well. Now I always do a full reinstall so that everything is as it is intended to be.
China isn't bowing to the current Imaginary Property system because it only hurts them, just as they resisted Britain's attempts to get them all hooked on Opium in the 19th century.
The USA did the exact same thing in the early stages of its rise to power, ignoring the Imaginary Property of European countries.
LibreOffice is a fork of OO.org that was started because of Oracle's buyout of Sun. They asked Oracle to donate the OO.org name to their fork, and now Oracle has kicked them out of the OO.org community counsel. Hard to say if it's good or bad, but it looks to be the start of a fight.
Yes, I'm also very surprised by this. I've always thought of Europe as much more secular than the USA, so to hear all these countries collect taxes on the behalf of various religious institutions is bizarre.
If you are in the heart of outer Mongolia, and you do not have access to a 220V outlet, you are fucked. Your stupid 2 Ghz Quad core paperweight wont last more then 3 hours w/o dying. If on the other hand, you have your trusty Voyage 200, (upscale version of the TI-89), you can calculate for months on set of AAA batteries.
LOL... I think the battery life of your calculation device of choice would be very far down the list of concerns you'd have in such a situation.:)
No, I recognized it from that anime. I've only seen a handful of episodes of GinS so I had no idea what was going on story-wise, but that distinctive logo stuck with me.
Overlooking the Wiki article on the book makes me think I was not introduced to it because I went to a Catholic school. It wouldn't have been banned from the library, but it probably wouldn't have been allowed as part of a class curriculum, either.
Surely you've noticed this guy before? He's a nametroll of Smidge204.
He's been pretty successful at trolling on/. recently, getting lots of responses despite being both wildly off-topic and making no effort to disguise the trolling. Not posting as AC is apparently enough to get other users to respond to even obvious trolls.
Disclaimer: the last FF I played was IX, so this might have changed since then.
The battle-on-field-map/Gambit system in XII made combat much more fun. The characters in that game were a bit lacking, but I got several hundred hours of enjoyable gameplay out of that title. Lots of interesting locations to visit and items to collect/grind for.
This exact same problem is driving me to install Ubuntu 10.10 over Kubuntu 10.04 right now. I'm tired of this not working.
Agreed... it's a false dichotomy.
Resolving this debate is as easy as describing the sound of one hand clapping or finding a coin with only one side.
I love the Power Glove... 'cuz it's so bad.

I don't see much in this article that is new.

I have a steady 5 Megabytes per second here.
The first time you mentioned "5mb" and now you say "5 Megabytes". There are 8 Megabits (Mb) in 1 Megabyte (MB).
If you are downloading at 5 MB/s, you have a 40Mb/s download capacity.

It might even be possible to game the algorithm and cost the firm big money.
As opposed to the current situation, with the algos gaming the stock market and costing everyone not HFTing big money?

Mac OS X is supposed to be better than both of those. Apple is sacrificing the "just works" mantra for political/business reasons.
Also, every recent Windows computer I have worked on had both Flash and Java installed (along with all the vendor crapware) out of the box.

Your complaint is about a semantic issue, not a grammatical one.
That joke applies more to New Zealand than Australia.
Same here, although the installer glitched out on me and wiped out my previous Ubuntu AND my Windows partitions, replacing both with 10.10 instead.
Methinks the glitch was with the user, rather than the installer... be sure to pay attention when clicking through those screens! :)

This is the third 6-digit UID I've seen posting single sentences with Goatse goo.gl links... maybe someone is hacking /. accounts?

why do you cower? what are you afraid of?
This coming from a guy who posted with 5 different UIDs in one thread?
Shut the fuck up, samefag.

That phrase was familiar to me, but I wasn't sure where I had seen it... now I remember:

Ah, I'm not the person reading this story with the slowest internet service... I've got 1536kbps down and 768kbps up. :)
20-fingered
Inbreed much? :)
