The biggest issue for me right now is that I see (and more importantly, look for!) the score before reading the comment itself.
You simply judge the same comment differently if you already know it's supposed to be Interesting or Funny.
Make use of the option to turn off the score display and that way you can make up your own mind about the quality of each post without outside influence.
That's correct, inflation has almost gotten us to the point where getting those Canadian coins in your change is a positive rather than a negative. I can't actually spend a $50 or $100 bill in more than half of the stores in my local area, ironic given the ever rising prices for everything.
Perhaps I'll be papering my walls with $20 bills within the next 10 years, ala the Weimar Republic.
As far as I know, Slashdot does a short port scan on your IPv4 address when you preview or post a comment in order to make sure that your machine isn't an open proxy that might be abused for vandalism. That's why your first preview of the day from a given machine is so slow: it has to wait for the connections to time out.
So that's the cause of this behavior... thanks for the insight.
A more interesting change to Orion would be Betelguese going supernova (and that event becoming visible on Earth) in the next 50,000 years.
Betelgeuse is already old for its size class and will explode relatively soon compared to its age. At the current distance of Betelgeuse from the Earth, such a supernova explosion would be the brightest recorded; outshining the Moon in the night sky and becoming easily visible in broad daylight.
Also not mentioned is that Gilese 581 is class M red dwarf star with a radiation output very different from that of the Sun. The lack of UV light and greater amount of infrared light may have implications for the ability for life to develop.
The star's small power output is why a planet with an orbital period of only 37 days (Mercury orbits in 88 days, for comparison) can be in the habitable zone.
Using a hydrocarbon as a measuring stick for the presence of life is not a very good indicator. Venus has oceans of the crap sloshing around. doesn't imply life.
Bullshit. The weight advantage of such an old vehicle is not enough to overcome its inefficiency in aerodynamics and in the transmission/engine combination.
You can make this argument for something from the early-mid 80's which weighs even less than the 60's vehicle, has much better aerodynamics and a lighter and more efficient powertrain, but 1968 is going too far back for a fuel economy argument.
Actually, the concern over CO2 does seem quite ignorant considering all the much nastier stuff we release into the atmosphere.
CO2 is a convenient target since it can be used as a justification for regulating practically everything, rather than choosing something that would only affect all those industrial lobbyists.
The OEM version is available with any hardware purchase. My understanding is that to meet the requirement when ordering just the software they'll throw in a tiny "hardware" component (usually a screw or a cable) to legitimize it. If you have ANY other piece of hardware in your order though then even that is not needed.
If you're going to skirt around the license terms in such a manner, you may as well be getting Windows for free off the Pirate Bay... because they are equally illegal.
64-bit Opera apparently comes with the ability to run 32-bit Flash in a wrapper "out of the box". I didn't bother trying to fix Flash in my other browsers since it just worked in Opera.
Having spent so much time with Opera, I'm actually not sure I'll go back to FireFox as my main browser...

Wildly off-topic and obvious flamebait, yet look at the discussion you have spawned.
Successful troll is successful... well played.
what leader/governing body (outside the US anyway) wants to be known for ratifying such a treaty now?
The French brought HADOPI into force, I could see them supporting ACTA.

NAT does provide security
No, a firewall provides security. Using NAT for network security is doing it wrong.
The IPv6 address space contains 3.4x10^38 addresses. For comparison's sake, the number of stars in the observable universe is estimated at 7x10^22.
3.4x10^38 addresses oughta be enough for anybody.
Methinks there is already plenty of free porn available on the IPv4 intertubez. :)

It seems you've managed to fail on multiple levels today. Congratulations.
Also odd how you can call Lawrence Lessig a "douche bag" and not get modded "flamebait".
He's calling Zuckerburg a douchebag, not Lessig.
ArsenneLupin is just very excited about the possibilities of Google's new service.
Judging by the number of goatse posts he's made recently, he apparently felt he had karma to burn.
Your expectation that /. stories should have meaningful titles is retro. :)
PS3 does better than that. It plays all the PS1 and PS2 plus PS3 games.
This may apply to your PS3 (and mine... 60GB), but plenty of folks can't play PS2 games on their PS3.

+1 Futurama reference. :)

Long arms? Give me a hourglass shaped babe with plenty of T&A, thanks. :)
If you look at the map, you'll see that the presence of heavy particulate pollution is highly correlated with desert areas.
Much of this type of pollution isn't necessarily man-made.

Venus? I think you meant Titan.

I'm sure there will be a lot of smart-ass comments making fun of this guy.
Can you blame them? This story belongs in Idle, not Technology.
Yes. That's why people are willing to pay money for it.
I disagree. The majority of Photoshop users did not pay any money for the software.
