It a teacher is going to phone it in what does that tell the class? Why should a student even bother to write a paper? Maybe students should have auto-generation software.
For all of the things we screw up in the US one thing we've done (mostly) right is college education. People travel from all over the world to go to school in the US.
On one hand I have eight year old kids that remind me how to feel young and play. They haven't turned into rebelous douchbags and I still manage to be thier hero occasionally.
On the other hand it's tough watching my parent become elderly. The people who were a pain in the ass when I was a teen. I love them more than ever. It breaks my heart knowing I won't have them much longer.
Assuming for a moment some of the teams might have experience working on commercial earth satellites, wouldn't it still make more sense to have a few milestone events before going straight the lunar rovers? It's a challenge simply getting a craft into lunar orbit, so maybe start there. Landing on the moon is another big milestone, even without the rover component.
I'd love to see a team win this, but they need to have permission to launch reserved by December. None of these teams has a rocket built/purchased.
Another example of computer laws/licensing not making sense in the real world.
>> "UMaple was after all making money from software written by MapleStory, without their permission."
If UMaple were making or selling car parts they would be OK. Autozone or NAPA sell parts not manufactured by the car maker. Instead of donations they can outright sell parts that service or enhance a car built by a 3rd party. They would be a similar relationship to the customer - they are offering an alternative to using factory part (or server in this case). Or perhaps UMaple decided to operate a towing/repair service - now they are actually servicing the car build by a 3rd party and soliciting even more money from the customer of a 3rd party car manufacturer.
I gave iPod Touch devices to my kids and maintain the software through the device and my home WiFi. I only hook the devices to a Windows PC to do the occasional backup. If Apple just had an iPod backup tool I would be just fine.
>> "...I'd love to see SpaceX, Virgin or any other player just go ahead and send a surprise cheap dumb booster up to the ISS for so little outlay that they can say "Oh hai, say, do you guys you want these supplies or not?..."
I understand your point and share your frustrations, but rockets pass through controlled commercial airspace as they launch. None of the carriers you mentioned want to get on FAA's bad side. Making feds pissed off is a bad way to kickstart a business.
The new commercial space carriers show great promise, but NASA shouldn't have just dropped the ball leaving a 5-10 year window where the US has no manned launch capability. Most businesses understand when you retire a platform you have it's replacement ready.
I must admit when I wrote the above I mistakenly jumped to the conclusion of the data center as being a part of the Olympic campus. Given the high profile of the Olympics it's not hard to imagine a dedicated use building with some rented systems for the event.
That said, it's shouldn't be difficult for Interxion to take a few office rooms and convert them to overnights given the priority they've placed on 24/7 staffing during this period.
Considering the Olympics only runs for 2 weeks I can see where a condition of the job would be on call 24/7. Television never sleeps. So why didn't they build hotel rooms into the IT center? Why a bunch of stupid pods?
Customer: Look! I came here to make a return. Best Buy: Oh! I'm sorry, this is abuse. Customer: Oh I see, that explains it. Best Buy: No, you want room 12A next door. Customer: I see - sorry. Best Buy: Not at all. Stupid git.
A app store put together by Google has a crappy search engine. Talk about irony.
When I search for stuff in the Play Store (what a stupid name change) the problem usually isn't no results. The issues is there's no preferences to sort by highest rated or other criteria. Most searches return dozens of hits but it's a mixed bag as far as relevancy.
I guess nobody ever roots their iPhones to install homebrew software. All of those rooting videos on youtube must be my imagination.
@AC - Just because YOU don't have a need or desire to install software from alternative sources doesn't mean nobody else should. That's not even a platform specific desire. Apple or Android - if you own a smartphone you have a portable computer in your pocket. There will always be people who want to tinker and think outside the box and push the limits of what they can do WITH A DEVICE THEY OWN. They shouldn't have to play by Apple's rules, Google's rules, or yours. It doesn't make them 'fandroids', it makes them curious.
My understanding is Wayland is not ready for prime-time just yet, but when distros start using it will have X11 legacy support to handle stuff like this.
By putting a 1.0 out there they are telling developers of X11 apps to start planning/testing/adapting.
IIRC X11 has a lot of redundancy with stuff that's already in the Linux kernel. Weyland is a compositing window manager that removes those redundancies for better performance and code maintainability. Weyland loads X11 legacy support only as needed on an app by app basis. Benefits include Compiz working much better by bypassing X.
...are all people who actually act to make a change. hey are trying to change the world to be something they want to live in. That requires a certain amount of hope and optimism that a person's actions can make a difference. Cynics do not believe in the power of individuals, they think the whole game is rigged against them. To a cynic the world consists of lemmings who go with the flow and individuals who engage in a futile fight against the power.
By shrugging one's shoulders and saying 'there's no point in bringing kids into this world like you breeders and dummies' a person shows they don't feel any optimism for the future so there's no point even trying.
Quitters and Sheep.
Steven Colbert said the following once and I've liked it ever since: "Now will saying 'yes' get you in trouble at times? Will saying 'yes' lead you to doing some foolish things? Yes it will. But don't be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying 'yes' begins things. Saying 'yes' is how things grow. Saying 'yes' leads to knowledge. 'Yes' is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say 'yes'."
"Retirement" is only an option when you have savings or someone supporting you like government or family. In a situation like MIT spells out you will not be retiring. Stay healthy.
I'm sure you feel superior referring to the rest of the world as dummies and breeders. But the passion and drive of young people is a key element in making the world a better place. You have failed to renew that resource. You are a cynic. Cynics do not change the world. They just stand to the side and watch while making snide remarks.
Salespeople hate nothing more than people who won't be spending money. Make it clear you're just there on a whim, lunch break, hanging with friends.... whatever.
"I don't have a dime to spend today". That might not even be true but it will make desperate salespeople fuck off. And at Best Buy they are desperate.... which is why they won't waste their time on a non-starter.

Tall order.

No. I own the patent on using Comic Sans to write sarcasm.

You young people with your fancy Model-Ts and internal combustion engines. My Stanley Steamer is good enough for me.

That's a very broad and legally vague concept.
If Amazon succeeds I expect many other international businesses to incorporate in the UK and attempt the same. In fact, they would be fools not to.

If you're still reading this and it made you mad what I wrote, good. You honestly need a good kick in the ass. Your attitude sucks.

Wow. We've gone from "OMG Ponies!" to "Turn off the lights the internet is over"
The MPAA and RIAA have shit all over April Fool's day.

Because $90 dollar gold plated contacts give cleaner digital signals than the $10 competitor. Every pensioner with a new widescreen can tell you that!
