Missing the Point has a new name its "SoupIsGoodFood_42".
Since your running a little late here I'll help out. The general concensus is that its lame that Apple thinks it should be able to tell you how to theme your own phone, because once you bought the thing, it should be yours to do with as you please.
Thats a continuing problem with Apple in general, Steve Jobs seems to think he still owns the shit he sells people. I'm pretty well known as an Apple h8r going long back, and I'm still shocked at how Apple fanboys not only find this defensible, but GOOD.
Totally true. I bought an EEE 901 when they first came out. Realistically, the brand new netbooks haven't changed at all, there is no point to my upgrading. I even look around frequently to see if there is any nice upgrades that I might like -- nope. Nothing worth upgrading to!
More than this, you can now easily put a 2D barcode on your business card so it can be scanned into a phone quickly and easily. I'm a entrepreneur and I wouldn't be without my business cards. Nerds might think they are outdated, but nerds aren't the usual people that you do business with. A lot of this sounds like the sort of tech-snobbery that losses sales to more pleasant people. They are also perfect for writing short notes on too.
No, business cards are very important. There are also legal reasons for keeping a business card on you as well.
Here is an idea, try and learn to concentrate. Whining that you got bad marks because the guy ahead of you had a screen saver that distracted you is amoung the more pathetic excuses I've heard. If you can't use a computer because you can't keep your sorry ass out of facebook or whatever then thats your problem.
Its extremely annoying when losers try to make things that are generally their problem, everyone elses problem too. Thats all thats going on here, so, move along...
So, lets throw some fairly complex software at some people for a day and see how they do. Surprise! They prefer the stuff they've been using *since they know how to use it*. Just throwing a piece of software at someone doesn't mean they know how to use it. Fuck, if they managed to get that newspaper out at all, then that means the free software was so efficient and easy to use, a bunch of people who've never used it before could get the job done with it.
It seems the whole point of these stupid exercises is just for retards to justify how much they've spent on expensive proprietary crap.
According to Rick Berman, absolutely nothing;) Slashdot's just leading the way to a better future for everyone. Once we get rid of financial incentives we will have our flying cars in no time, baby.
What a load of crap. Sorry man. The kernel world isn't really fragmented if your talking about hardware. All distros pull the kernel sources from the same place and just tweak it. As far as hardware support is concerned "fragmentation" is not a problem. There is not any valid reason for hardware manufacturers not to have kernel drivers. Fragmentation in linux is an annoying myth.
Oh, nice example. If fear mongering hippies hadn't got DDT banned many lives would have been saved from insect borne diseases. DDT is not dangerous except in very, very high concentrations. A quick google for DDT fearing mongering will give you lots of examples.
Seriously, are you honestly suggesting that nanotech and carbon nanotubes be stopped because of some completely made up dangers? Even if the substance turns out to be dangerous in certain circumstances, its still going to revolutionize many things for the better.
If only we can keep the hippies from ruining it like they've done to so many life-saving and useful technologies.
You -are- an ape. Yeah, perhaps you where too busy drooling over inaccessible chicks in class, but you are in fact not only an Ape, but a Great Ape. A Great Ape!!
>Who do I have to blow to get plain text mail made the default?
Talk about taking one for the team, because, you know... I wasn't really willing to take the cockmeat sandwich approach to convincing developers about things.
Britz isn't kidding. I picked a fight with some apple fanbois a while ago, and got modded into oblivion. I worked my karma back up to max, and I still post at -1 by default. Hows that work, exactly. --SD
You are totally wrong in every way. This should be obvious to anyone who has been on slashdot for any length of time, so I'm always surprised when I see someone who doesn't quite understand the key feature of linux. Next's interface wasn't that special, it was nice. Yipee. OSX's is a candy cane version of that. Personally, I think its ugly and clumsey. But thats all opinion, isn't it? But what isn't opinion, is that Apple isn't going to save you from any evil, because it has no better plans for you then MS does. Put briefly, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are both dictators cut from the exact same cloth.
Whenever I see someone who is so obviously proud of their Mac ownership ("Look at me! I think DIFFERENT") its incredibly sad -- the truth of the matter is that you buy an Apple, you are just a slave to a different master. Hell, you can't even choose what computer to run OSX on. A victory for OSX is a victory for Steve Jobs and no one else on this world.
Apple users are a little bit too old to be buying into the fairy tale vision of Steve Jobs. So you don't like any of Linux's interfaces, and don't care to write your own (and who would blame you really).. you can't stand windows, and you like OSX. So you suck it up and fork out the tons of cash required to buy an Apple. So far you are just fine -- right up until you start ranting on the Internet about how Steve Jobs is going you save the world and make the lambs lie down with the lions. Thats just plain delusional. You can use your OS because you like the interface, but this rubbish about the Benevolent Dictator Steve Jobs is such utter rot, I am tired of hearing this nonsense and I'm sure anyone who actually has a clue is tired of it too.
Well... no. Ok, so, someone (MS in this case) *dreams* up a new OS design that will make everything perfect in computing. Only, MS will never and can never actually build such a thing. Anyone can write a paper. I could write a paper, it could even sound good -- but its probably going to be dreamer garbage with no real hopes of existing. Whatever this OS would be called (not Windows 7:) would hardly be the first one of its kind to exist. Plan9 was revolutionary and creative, but look how far it got. Computing is still about good enough.
Anyone who thinks that a close-source company is going to revolutionize computing is out of their minds -- it'll just be the same game we've been playing since Win95 -- placing control in the hands of a company, be it MS, Apple, or anyone else.
So yeah, ok, lets say that "they only just got started.", but everyone knows that thats exactly as far as they are ever going to get.
Linux isn't probably going to outlive all these guys, at least until another Free OS comes out that is better. It'll have nothing to do with stupid media codecs and DRM when it does, when Linux 'dies' it'll be because -we- superseded it another another Free OS. I run just linux myself, I have for a long time. I can manage to view most things without too much trouble, and if there are few very stupid companies that don't want their content viewable... fuck 'em.
Trust me on this one, Linux isn't going into the night at all, and least of all because the BBC is ran by a bunch of corrupt idiots too busy suckling on Microsofts teat to snack on some clue.
I wish your kind would just shut up and go away forever. "Linux will never be mainstream," you begin, "Until it magically supports all the hardware -- even when the makers of said hardware keep its operation a secret." Great. That's good news, then you continue, "Oh, and it has to work instantly will all the proprietary codecs, especially the ones that you need licenses to ship." Oh yeah dude, we'll get right on that. Perhaps you think we should just, ignore the law. No problem, we'll just get our massive team of lawyers to change the laws so we can get our way.
And how the hell do you think we are going to manage all this impossible stuff? Do you have any useful input? At all? Or are you just complaining. How anyone modded you insightful, exactly, because honestly, your statement was just empty trash about stuff that EVERYONE knows already. Pay attention: WE CANNOT SHIP CODECS WITH DISTROS WITHOUT PAYING A LICENSE FEE. Microsoft pays these people. The programs for windows that you buy, pay these people -- or they are illegal. Its that simple. Thats why Ubuntu doesn't ship with a bunch of proprietary codecs, because they don't charge anything for the distro, they can't pay the company who owns the codec. Now that I have made this clear, please stop making impossible demands. Just go on and decide all on your own that linux will never be mainstream, its not like you had to pay for it after all, did you.
We are doing the best we can with what we have and if thats just not good enough for you, then you can keep using windows, see if anyone cares. --SD
Frankly fellas, the desktop utils that exist already are fine. Kontact has a lot of functionality built into it, I prefer it over anything MS has to offer any day. The problem is, in fact, not that the desktop stuff needs work -- it doesn't, Kontact AND Evolution are great programs (even if Evolution stinks of Novell a little too much in its functionality.. IMO!). What we actually need is a groupware suite that rivals Exchange. OpenOffice.org is good enough to be used, and this isn't gleaned from my own personal experience (although it does collaborate it) its from talking with people in the business community that are IT savvy. For the moment, if OOo doesn't fly, we can use Crossover Office.. if we have to.
The groupware situation on linux is pretty rough. You can get Groupwise, Open-Xchange and Zimbra that all look and probably work great, but they cost a fortune. In fact, they price themselves right out of the area where I'd like to deploy them the most, small businesses. There is a small horde of incomplete, ugly, buggy and feature-lacking groupware suites out, eGroupware looking the best to my eye (1.2 was awful, 1.4 seems better). One of the big reasons I specialize in offering linux stuff to customers is the fact I can give users stuff that costs less, things like per-seat licensing are a pain in the ass, I'd like to say, "Hey, we don't have those. If you hire a new person, we just need to create the account, not pay for a new seat." Worse, a lot of them expect -yearly- money. Gross.
All we need is a groupware suite thats GPL/BSD, is stable, offers the basics like calendar sharing, addressbooks, appointments and integrates with things like Funambol. Integrating with Outlook clients isn't such a big deal anymore, but its the server that'll really help linux break in. Besides, I can't be the only one who feels that having Linux Desktops connect to a Windows Server feels somehow deeply backwards. Linux makes a wonderful server, so when it comes to attacking a market, we should attack where we are strong -- on the server. Once you have a linux server running the show, the desktops becomes an obvious choice.
Talk about MISSING THE POINT.

Apple fanboys are completely, utterly, insane.
Totally true. I bought an EEE 901 when they first came out. Realistically, the brand new netbooks haven't changed at all, there is no point to my upgrading. I even look around frequently to see if there is any nice upgrades that I might like -- nope. Nothing worth upgrading to!
Just ditch the MS and they run fine anyway.
More than this, you can now easily put a 2D barcode on your business card so it can be scanned into a phone quickly and easily. I'm a entrepreneur and I wouldn't be without my business cards. Great,
Now we have beer... if you open up a Tim Hortons up there somewhere, we Canadians can come too!

7. The icon in claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 in which the word "STOP" appears in any human language.
So... whats "STOP" in Klingon? Patent time baby!
Astronaut takes 2389358954390354-e35 damage.
Huh? Anyone know how much this is in Space Shuttle Explosions?

Yup.
Seems right. :)
Oh shit.
Just when I finally wrapped my head around time with 4 sides ;(
Thats not it.
If that was true, they would change the buttons on gnome back to the way it is on every other distro.
At least get your facts right here...
"less fragmented than Linux"

Well, if its anything like dodging asteroids you just hit the turbo and move up and down. No problem, nothing to see here.
I'd love to have a 'failure' like Vista!
I'm pretty sure you could find a copy on pirate bay. ;)

You -are- an ape. Yeah, perhaps you where too busy drooling over inaccessible chicks in class, but you are in fact not only an Ape, but a Great Ape. A Great Ape!!
There ya go, problem solved buddy, now get it on!
Michael, dude.

At least Linux now has some of that Gangsta Cred we've been missing for so long. Now we can get Murder Inc. to press linux cd's for us!
