This is not really Air Conditioning. The heat will not transfer from the water that fast, because it is not going with the water for a long time.
What this thing is doing is adding lots of miniscule Cold water droplets to the air. This helps by cooling the air, but increases the moisture. It is a great method for reducing temperature during hot and dry conditions, but very bad for hot and humid conditions.
In our place we use this till July, then when monsoon starts the only recourse is an Air Conditioner. But Air Cooler is very cost effective compared to Air Conditioner, and IMHO also more environment friendly.
Ofcourse you don't need ice from the Freezer, simply using tap water is enough.
I don't know why a trackerless mode was chosen, I thought that the efficiency of BT is due to the centralized tracker. I think it would be better to provide redundancy to the tracker function by adding a super tracker functionality.
Actually the centrallized tracker is a very important thing. It decides who downloads what. Without the central tracker the effort will not be that synchronized.
I was expecting the development to be towards making the tracker redundant, with creating a super tracker, that would track the tracker.
Also the.torrent file is the real problem in hosting files. Its not as easy as just providing one directory and every file in that directory gets shared. Ofcourse there are benefits also to the.torrent file when we want to serve a whole directory as a single torrent. An approach where both kinds of things can be done will be better than a single method.
Also the Emule has it better that it can determine that multiple names of a file are actually the same file, based on the same Hash.
I would think it would be better to have super trackers track the trackers, with multiple super-trackers tracking the same tracker. And each super tracker would be tracking multiple trackers. Super trackers would provide the search capabilities, and would share tracker information among themselves. They would also provide tracker redundancy. They would also be able to determine if the different file names are in fact the same file, and merge several trackers into one.
I think the peers with good bandwidth and with maximum completed parts would become the tracker. The benefit of being the tracker would be that you get the file faster, because the tracker would obviously give itself the benefit. Then when the tracker has completed its own file. A new tracker would be selected.
Well the reason I modded it down was that its so demeaning to us Indians. Yes this happens in India.
So who is responsible, do you have any idea. The problem is education. There is not enough of it. Did you fund any non-profit organisation here who was providing education to poor Indians. Who gave you the right to say such hurtful things.
The only reason why you are saying this is because of outsourcing of IT jobs. Because it hurts you. You are losing the advantage you had, of getting a much better salary than the average.
But don't forget that the things you said to not apply to the IT sector. The Software Engineers) are living much better in India than their American counterparts, at least on the things that we care about.
Can you eat outside daily in a decent restaurant without going over budget. Can you afford a Chauffer for your car in budget. Can you get house help who will clean your house, clothes and cook food in Budget. We can and that is what we care about more than the latest electronic gadgets.
I am just 33 and own a house and will be able to pay off the mortgage in a couple years more. And I will say that I am not as successful as my other friends. Can you say something like that.
You talk about safety regulations, what are those that would matter in the IT industry. An american should not talk about the Environment regulations, because they are the worst in the developed nations. They probably produce more emissions than India (except if you consider emissions from Cars).
Yes we work harder than you guys. Because we don't have labour unions, and nobody would protect us if we lost the job. There is no job security. We have to save our old age pension ourselves. There is no social security. So we save as much as possible.
We have been in this job insecure position since the beginning so we take it for granted. You will have to come to terms with it and work hard to be where you are. It is going to be harder on you than on us, because you cost more than us. Even though we live more lavishly (in the lower salary) than you.
Such rants are not going to help you. The only possibility of job security for you is to learn some foreign language (Indian or Chinese) and learn about our culture so that you can be the bridge between our technical people and your consumers.

I would say that USA has the highest concentration of money but I don't agree with 80%, I wouldn't even agree with 50%. But I don't have any data to back it up maybe you have. I didn't say the rest of the world will not crash but I said that a couple of years will be enough to recover for the rest of the world.
Actually not all software is required for the local
consumption. The ones that are required will
eventually return to you because they will be done
better there. Ofcourse CEOs make stupid decisions sometimes knowingly these days because of the crazy stock markets. I think there is a major need for reform there.
You mean you don't mind losing the Oracles, the IBMs, the Microsofts of USA because they are not doing anything that is local. Well I would think losing them will be a major downer. In my opinion this is not the time to look within. You have had your progress because you were open and were selling products abroad. You should think about how to reduce the deficit and other things will fall in place. Some people will suffer anyway like in every generation. That shouldn't stop you from growing in other fields.
I don't know why you think that we are only developing things for the outside world. We are also consumers.
We do use computers just like US companies and mostly we are using Windows, but these days Linux is gaining share. We can use Western software much easily because of English, but that doesn't mean we don't have locallized software. How else do you think we manage our Railway Reservation systems, microsoft doesn't supply that. We have had local software for reservations since some 10 years ago.
It is not true that you are not allowed to take my job but you may not get more salary than our president, which is pretty low;-). But that is not such a big hinderance as long as your company is willing to hire you. Bribing officials is not a big task here, and you can get much more salary than that.
Well you would be a better fit to interface with the client, and you will need to interface with the locals as well where you will not be a great fit. How things work here is that the Clients interface with the Business group people here which in turn interface with the people here. The Business people do know how to speak your accent also, its not too difficult you know. They are the people who worked in USA for a few years and then came back when it became more profitable to work here. For technical problems Managers and developers interface with the Client since we already know english well (we learn english from the beginning of education). And it is not that big a problem when we are talking about technical things.
If you really wanted to take my job you would have to learn how to interface with indian people learn a bit of the local language and culture. With your experience you can join the Business group in which case you will probably be posted in the country where the client stays and only make trips to India once in a while. There are only two other types of jobs and they don't suit you.
The first is highly technical position where you will be supposed to know and be abreast of a large no. of things so that you can think where the company should be going, you should be able to consult various divisions of the companies on technology directions. This job really requires depth and width of knowledge. I don't know if you are up to it.
The second is managing lots of people, this requires knowledge of local language and local customs and culture. This does not fit you.
In India if you are 6-7 years you would not be getting a programming job you should have already lead a team of small size. Being in a technical job for more than 10 years is not good for your career, you would be out of job most probably.
Sysadmins are the worst affected, their job is not considered terribly important. They are normally inexperienced people who are in it because they couldn't get an engineering education or co
I guess you don't have many options regarding
outsourcing as it is a global phenomenon.
There will be
outsourcing because producing software requires little proximity to the consumers.
When we are talking about 100K Jobs that are
being outsourced we are also talking of some 10K
jobs that will be there to manage these 100K
outsourced workers. Its not that you are going to
outsource everything, if a company tries to
offsource everything they will fail. These are
the 10K jobs at the higher conceptual level than
coding.
If you try to stop outsourcing through
legislation. There will be some jobs that are
for local consumption like the Call Center jobs,
which are actually like the Pizza Delivary jobs.
These can be prevented but rest of the IT jobs
will move out. What will happen is that companies
will start moving out of USA, because they will
find that working under drakonian laws they are
not able to compete with companies which are not
in the USA. The companies that don't move out
will die out, because they will not be able to
compete internationally. You will also be losing
out on the 10K jobs that have a higher creative/
management content.
We (in India) have suffered under protectionism
before we started opening up in 1990. If we
hadn't given up on protectionism then we would
not be in this position now. Not understanding
this is fine, its a common misperception that
protectionism helps. What is not understandable
is the following quote.
They know that a trade deficit this large is
unsustainable, and that eventually, when there is
no middle class in America to buy their goods and
services, the whole global economy will collapse,
and yet, they do nothing about it, and prefer to
make a short-term profit, fucking the long term
global economy.
What makes you so sure that America is the center
of the global economy. You might not know it but
gradually America is losing the central place.
Even the Doller is no longer the solid currency
it used to be. Heck even the Indian Rupee is
gaining over it.
And how does collapsing of American economy cause
long term global economy collapse. Granted there
will be a short term collapse but nothing that a
couple of years will not solve.
Don't think that America will remain the biggest
consumers by 2010. If America does put laws in
place to prevent outsourcing, I can wager that
the crash will happen much much sooner. The crash
may be there even without these laws because of
the huge deficit. You can blame your Governments
for spending so much for defence which is more
than what the spending of the other top 7 defence
spenders. India also spends much too much, but at
least we have a neighbouring terrorist state as
an excuse.
I am from India and can tell you that it is not
just the Americans that should be feeling the
outsourcing problems. In my company we have got
projects mainly from Japan and Europe. American
is the traditional business, but percent-wise
its much less than before. I don't see protests
from other contries as much. IMHO its like crying
over spilt milk. There is nothing that can be
done other than learn new skills and move on.
The reason why most outsourcing happens to India is because of two reasons India is cheaper, and
in comparison to other Asian contries we know
English as a near first language. Both the reason
may not be true for a very long time. But if the
first reason ceases to be valid then living
conditions would have grown to a much higher
level and that will be good news. We will do
something else by that time.
So should you.

Without GNU, there is no GPL. Without GPL there is no Linux. Linus Torvalds would have still released his code but it would be in an even more strict license than GPL. Yes everybody could use BSD, but it may not develop as fast as Linux, because many people do not like to work for free, when your output could be used by others without any return (not necessarily monetary). I would say Open Source wouldn't be in the same place as today. It would be at least 5 years behind. Unless somebody else came up with GPL, and Linus started using it. Linux also improved so much faster because Linus was using the tools that FSF built for GNU.
The crux of the Vi vs Emacs war is that not all people can use two modes efficiently. I just cannot use Vi to enter text, but I do use it a lot to do quick editing.
Proponents of BSD Make should read the excellent paper "Recursive Make considered harmful".
I guess you are a BSD person and consider Linux to be a threat to BSD. No other way can I interpret your lack of interest in FSF/GNU. BTW I don't think that BSDs could have ever been the dominant Open Source OS. No company would have contributed to it, they would have done what they have been doing so far forking the code base. Linux wasn't only there at the right time, it also had the correct license.
Try to think why there are so few volunteers for BSD-licensed compiler. It might occur to you that people actually prefer the GPL.
Reasonable people don't change the world, Unreasonable people do.
I think you have it backwards. If MS wins out and becomes a monopoly, then there will be no improvements, because improvements force them to spend money. While if they had a true monopoly they could get away selling software without doing anything. That is plain economics.
Look at a different picture where Microsoft has lost its monopoly but Linux is not a big force. Then the leading OS vendors have to follow whatever is the dominant chip. Ofcourse in this case there can be a monopoly in the chip market like the intel monopoly. The OS vendors will build only for intel, and we will have less improvements. But if we have a non monopoly situation we will have OS vendors supporting more than one chips, and there will be choice.
Next take a look at what happens when Linux and other Free Operating Systems constitute a monopoly, ie proprietory OSs have been relegated to niches. In this case all kinds of chips are supported. A hardware vendor is not at the mercy of the OS vendor, but can produce his own distribution and provide it along with the hardware. This is possibly the best of all worlds in my opinion.
Well you can look around you and see that current situation is precisely because there is a MS monopoly. AMD provides a processor but only because it is a clone of intel. No independent processor design can exist, in this monopolised environment. If Linux was the monopoly OS, Alpha wouldn't have died.
Ever tried to call your near and dear ones. I think you must have. Does it occur to you that poor people also want to do that. Do you think communication is only good for people who have nothing better to do than chat. Poor people can also use information, which will make them more efficient. This service will be a godsend for the people in the villages who don't have any phones for miles around.
And by the way this is being offered by a private corporation not the govt. So they are under no obligation to eradicate TB poverty etc. We are thankful that they have done something like this, which the govt should have done anyway.
Quick question how much money have you donated for the clean water supply in any place in the world. It obviously is not your job. You just like to hate others. You certainly make a world more liveable by cursing them. Life must be a hell for you to have so much hate.
Even a $1000 a year in India is pretty liveable, not by your standards sure, but its liveable. Food is cheap, and clothing is cheap. And if you are not in a city living can be very cheap.
You can't even live with the huge amount of money you have. You are so rich that we are not worth the dust under your feets. You must get so lonely there with nobody being your equal. God must give you the Midas touch so that you can turn your near and dears to gold then you will be happy. You sir are pathetic. Feel happy.
For the nth time, you don't have your priorities in the right places. You would much rather give alms to the beggers than create jobs for them. Actually providing food and stuff is like giving alms. You are creating your beggers out of your population. But if you would create jobs they will become self reliant. I am happy that Reliance Industries is doing something like this. This will certainly create a lot more jobs. India seriously lacks basic necessities for development and cheaper communication is among the top. I hope this will spur Indian innovation.
I am sure you will be unhappy when India rises from the ashes it is currently in, because you prefer that they remain beggers forever. I hate people who give alms.
Granted if you are thinking of keeping your phone bill to a minimum its not exactly very cheap at 600Rs ($13) per month. They are also asking for a 3000Rs ($65) registration charges. But they are claiming to give a phone worth 10,500Rs ($230). So I think they already know what there operating costs would be and they are getting that at the beginning. The phone would be yours if you keep the connection for 3yrs thats like in Western countries. I think the scheme is good.
Well think about it once telstra is privatised, then they can allow other private companies in the field. I think this is the normal method otherwise the government enterprise bogs down any new companies that you want to bring. That's what was being done by DOT in India before they were split into several parts and privatised. Now I think things will be better in India.
These companies should be fined. I know they did nothing wrong, but these were the very companies which did nothing to prevent DMCA from becoming a law. Actually they thought it would help them. The crime is exactly the same. They implemented something that might be used for doing bad. Actually this is much worse. While Johanson (Don't know the real spelling) only wrote DeCSS, but did nothing against copywrites, these companies actually sold their software to China for the specific use of Censorship.
While they are at it Amnesty International should also sue the companies providing censorship software to the Libraries (which blocks unsuitable material), France (which blocks nazi material), etc. Oppenheimer is actually the worst perpetrator. He produced a technology knowing well how it would be used. And it killed millions of Japanese. I think Oppenheimer should have been hanged.
At the end I think Amnesty International is after some quick bucks.
If you think that just because Darwin works upon Mach it is somehow equivalent to Hurd, you are sadly mistaken. Hurd is not a Unix clone. It is as far away from Unix as VMS was, or as MacOS is. The reason why you can even talk about them in the same sentence is that Hurd can and does sport a unix personality. But Hurd can sport any personality, a Windows personality, a MacOS personality. Because basically its not Unix. It has a much more general API, over which you can host several OS personalities. A Hurd task can be a Mach task, but you can't do that either on MKLinux (Linux on Mach) or Darwin (Basically FreeBSD on Mach). There may be different reasons why Hurd will not thrive but being run of the mill won't be it. Hurd is and will be different.
I am guessing here but it seems to me that, for every CT scan frame it generates a few points depending on the resolution you are looking. So if you have a 3D object the CT scan will take many sections of it. Each section will show a lot of points. The thicker parts will have a higher density of points while a thinner part will have lower density. This will give the 3D effect. And it will do the generation a lot faster. When you want to take a closer look it will generate more points giving you a higher resolution picture.
It will look similar if you have seen a fractal being generated using the point method. The longer you wait the better the picture is.
This memo is from a User Group, not from a govt. official. I don't see how this is in anyway at the same level as the Peruvian Senator's memo. Not to discount the fact that the memo is written very well indeed.
I am an Indian but these kudos are a bit misplaced. I would be really proud if some politician would put his name to the memo.
So how much money do you percieve will be required to teach half a billion people. How much are you willing to shell out. Why don't you start by spending money for these illiterate people. India sure doesn't have money, atleast what the bloody thirsty politicians will spare. There is only one way to teach these people, and that is making them understand the value of literacy. Most of them don't even care about it. I hope people will find Simputer useful, and that will require them to understand the interface. Which will require them to learn, and hopefully will push them towards literacy. You can't force teach people.
Good when you sue for the stolen code and GPL is found not valid even then you will win because then you are protected under the copywrite law and the other guy is in the wrong. If GPL is valid still you win because then the guy has violated the code. So its a win win situation for you. But a very bad situation for the other guy so he will do anything to get out of the situation. So out of court settlement happens. Result no test for GPL. I think it will be a very rare and stupid person to try and prove GPL invalid, because the person does not gain anything out of it. Not even MS will find any benefit there.
These people should be put behind bars for trying to crack the TCP/IP stack. They have also attacked so many different OS's. Atleast MS should sue them.

The reason why most outsourcing happens to India is because of two reasons India is cheaper, and in comparison to other Asian contries we know English as a near first language. Both the reason may not be true for a very long time. But if the first reason ceases to be valid then living conditions would have grown to a much higher level and that will be good news. We will do something else by that time.
If you were, you would have been praying for it rather than bitching about the metered costs.
Feel happy.
its not .08$ its .008$, so the cost comes out to be 9.6$. Go figure.
I am guessing here but it seems to me that, for
every CT scan frame it generates a few points
depending on the resolution you are looking. So if
you have a 3D object the CT scan will take many
sections of it. Each section will show a lot of
points. The thicker parts will have a higher
density of points while a thinner part will have
lower density. This will give the 3D effect. And it
will do the generation a lot faster. When you want
to take a closer look it will generate more points
giving you a higher resolution picture.
It will look similar if you have seen a fractal
being generated using the point method. The longer
you wait the better the picture is.
This memo is from a User Group, not from a govt.
official. I don't see how this is in anyway at the
same level as the Peruvian Senator's memo. Not to
discount the fact that the memo is written very
well indeed.
I am an Indian but these kudos are a bit misplaced.
I would be really proud if some politician would put
his name to the memo.
So how much money do you percieve will be required
to teach half a billion people. How much are you
willing to shell out. Why don't you start by
spending money for these illiterate people. India
sure doesn't have money, atleast what the bloody
thirsty politicians will spare. There is only
one way to teach these people, and that is making
them understand the value of literacy. Most of them
don't even care about it. I hope people will find
Simputer useful, and that will require them to
understand the interface. Which will require them
to learn, and hopefully will push them towards
literacy.
