  1. problem solved? on Elegant Email Encryption for Everyone? · · Score: 2

Here's my solution: write a program that, whenever you type an email, instead of sending the email, it writes the text in a self destroying webpage, and then sends the link to the page instead of the text itself.

so the email that's actually sent would read something like "Jose Garcia has sent you an email, pres here to see it. and when the user clicks de page, a browser displays the content on a secure server (https). once the page is seen once, it is forever deleted from the server (or whatever settings you provide for number of views and type of deletion). the reader can save the html file in his computer if it wants a copy.

ok, so i didn't sovle the problem, since government can still see the email with the link and click the link, but at least you'll know you're been watched... =)

now if this idea even makes sense, and someone decides to do it, feel free. this post is GPLed (or whatever it is i need to do to make it free information), just put my name somewhere so i can brag to chics ok?

*SIGH* I saw this coming from miles away...

Are you so arrogant as to think that the US is the only acceptable place for classy millionaires with space travel wishes? well I'll tell you what, pretty much ANY classy millionaire would accept living in a whole lot of places outside the US. Argentina, France, Australia, Canada, etc., and in fact many of them do.

And that only speaks of your lack of knowledge, but I also have a problem with your judgement. I would suspect that any marker research done to establish the demand for space tourism will throw out numbers that would contradict your statement. The Denis Titos and James Camerons of the world wouldn't mind traveling to, say, Brazil, to get on a rocket heading for a space station. Believe me, it is not in Brazil that they will encounter an unconfortable, unsafe environment, it will be in space.

Now I do agree that they'll rather do the whole thing in the states, in spite of all the legal hurdles. Why? well because it's cheaper, to the point where it seems to be feasible. Most of the technology required to go to space, and the knowledgeable people that make it work, are in greater supply in the US. Furthermore, if you read the article, they are counting on someone else to develop a cheaper way of taking people to earth orbit, and most projects heading that way are either in the US or Canada.

I can only think of Russia, France, Japan and maybe Brazil, as viable alternatives, due mainly to the fact that those countries have space launch infrastructure (and I'm sure I left some out). Still I would think that it would be cheaper to do it in the US because of the greater availability of engineers specialized in the field.

But you know what? since I haven't seen the BP for this enterprise, I can't be certain. Unlike you, who seem to know it all...

  4. looks are everything...well almost... on Compaq's Laptop/Desktop Concepts · · Score: 2

I seem to be the only one here that thinks different when it comes to looks. I'm sorry, but to me, looks are TOO important.

Sure, I still do some coding now and then. Sure I write all my own business plans and financial reports and analisys, and sure it's important for my PC to function properly, but that's not hard to do anymore. I can use pretty much any computer and fix whatever problems I have on them on the fly, and as long as I have enough RAM and HDD, i don't care about the rest (not even the CPU as long as it's at least a PII or more). I don't even care if it runs windows or linux, as long as I can get the job done, and I usually can.

The huge difference I see is that to me, looks are VERY VERY important. I want my computer to look cool, my cars to look impressive and my women to be pretty (and to me my wife is). Why? i don't know. I'm not insecure at all. I don't have a problem with my penis size, I'm not a show off and I'm usually a very idealistic guy (instead of materialistic), but there's nothing like a good design. To me, it's inspirational. If I love the way my computer looks, it makes me want to spend more time on it, and probably I'll feel more motivated. It's like a house. I don't just want four walls, a place to sit and a net jack every few feet, I want a good looking house, with pilars, a patio, good lighting, cool plants, lots of maps and that sort of excentric stuff.

Maybe it's because I really do love art, or maybe it's because i'm just human. Even the software my company develops has to be pretty, even if we still have to iron out some bugs. And i know this would make a lot of people unconfortable, but a system that looks good sells easily, because it looks polished, even if it's a piece of crap on the inside (and no, we don't develop pieces of crap, really!), but a system that does EVERYTHING, but looks like one of those casio electronic agendas of the 80's is less likely to succeed. That's just how humans work. It's all about perception, no matter how hard we try here to make everyone believe that function is more important. And if I have to mention our holy war just to connect (i'm reading too much katz, sorry), that's why linux is not very popular as a desktop OS for the masses, and windows with all it's bugs and BSOD's is.

Heck, in our experience, if the software looks good, people are more likely to use and enjoy it and less likely to complain about any faults, even if it's a fault in the system (which creates a different set of problems, especially related to feedback)

so if this line of computers offers nothing new in terms of functionality or practicality, but look cool as hell, when I get the cash I'll buy one of those, an Audi TT convertible and go watch The Matrix with my wife again in a brand new Plasma screen. Trust me, I'll be inspired. Maybe that day i'll finish my novel....

  5. How does it work? on 3D Videoconferencing Over Internet2 · · Score: 2

I've read the whole thing and i still can't figure out if this actually records 3d images, and if so, how does it do it?

When it says you can have eye contact, does it mean that the person being "teleported" (at least you know they have a marketing department) will also receive an image of the room he's being teleported to? if not, this isn't eye contact any more than staring at a monalisa painting is...

So, if this is what it sounds like, and what they have is a 3d recorder and a 3d proyector (they claim 40" by 30") on each end, then a $70,000.00 price tag is a bargain I think. I can even see how it could pay for itself at that price. Just imagine how much it costs a company to have bi-monthly meetings with executives, say, from their Japan branch. Not just the plane ticket, but hotel costs, the 3 wasted days traveling, etc. Most likely they just wouldn't have those meetings, so this product opens up new possibilities...

Now if you ask me how I would have done it, well, I'd stick with glasses that project images into your eyes. You can record the whole scene with several traditional cameras on both ends, have the computer generate a 3d model of both places (this can be done pretty easily already) and have them transmitted to their destination, where people are wearing glasses that project the "teleported" person in a fixed area somewhere in front of you, and have the image stay there even if you move your head. All of this has been done already but not with this application

  6. WTF! aren't we a bit short on stories.... on Electronic Pricetag Alteration · · Score: 2

And i don't mean slashdot, i mean the idiots that wrote the story in the first place.

ANYONE who has ever written a shopping cart type app, or has used a canned one (a la site server or commerce server) knows that you only pass along the item's identifier (usually a number or string). this ID is then used ON THE SERVER SIDE to retrieve pricing info from the product tables.

I haven't seen a shopping cart app out there, EVER, that uses pricing as a variable in the html code, and i doubt the writers of the story have either.

and just trying to say this is the same problem that the united airlines site had is just plain lieing.

so now that slamming the tech sector is hip, are they all just gonna start making shit up?

I wouldn't know how to measure it, but I bet a good percentage of all Slashdotters make their best effort to post good comments to get some karma points. You know why? because it's fun. yes, this IS a game, and in my book, everything is.

Sure, the main motivation behind most posts is to share your thoughts, but if I have instant feedback on what people think of what I write, AND i can keep track of that feedback in a measureable manner, what you have is a VERY fun game to play.

A good deal of the success of slashdot is owed to Karma points. I used to care about it a lot. After the cap, I got to open my eyes and realize what Slashdot's real value was, the news, and stopped caring about posting or letting others know my thoughts. Now I rarely post, only when i feel too passionate about a subject or don't have much else to do. I don't find time to write comments anymore, and I'm afraid others will open their eyes eventually and slashdot will be no more. I'll have to go back to the more traditional ways of getting news: the other's websites where people either don't have a comment option, or don't have enough motivation to comment.

I think karma is a great MARKETING (uuuuuh!) tool for slashdot but they refuse to use it. Not sure why though.

2- the copy of 3ds max that i have was downloaded off of warez. i'm not ashamed to say it. i use it to satisfy my own personal artistic needs (stress relief they call it), and if i were to profit from it i would probably have to buy it (although reluctantly). in that case $4,000.00 would not be a high price to pay compared to what good 3d scenes go for nowadays.
3- didn't you read the article? guess you were busy flaming the world. developing for indrema would cost as much as developing for linux: $0 plus tax. you pay if you sell your games, you pay if you want the technical certification.
4- indrema is not something i already have: there are no good standard (or widely used) APIs for game development in linux. and if i wanted to make games for directX on the windows platform, i would be restricted to closed everything. indrema gives you standard hardware/software and promotes a game development community through their website and overall cool attitude where you can share textures, game engines, ideas, characters, etc. you can also collaborate with games that are being developped much like you can do today with open source and free software projects.
5- and as i write this post, i realize what indrema is already giving me. like i said i'm no game developer, but i can come up with pretty pictures and efficient 3d meshes of my own. that qualifies me to participate in any open source game out there! and you said indrema is something i already had? no way! wouldn't it be cool to have your monster design make it to quake 7? i'll leave it at that.

my point is, you only need big studios for pre-rendered, motion captured scenes, and i can certainly live without that. a good game, good enough to compete with today's greatest, can still be a garage game, i guarantee you. motivated individuals can conceive and program entire worlds using good 3d software and programming skills, everything else is the story, gameplay and experience, and these can't be bought.
