Gee, and Sony fans have already been saying that the PS2 was an Xbox killer. Sony must really be feeling the pressure if they're planning on coming out with the PS3 anytime soon.
Uh. In which region does the Xbox sell for $500 and the PS2 for $250? Not the US, not Europe, not Australia. I believe both machines cost the same in all those regions now. I think the Xbox is still more expensive in Japan, but not twice as expensive. So which is it?
Thanks for the speculation. The fact that Halo has sold a million copies seems to indicate that console gamers do give a damn. By the way: Halo's not out in Japan yet.
But when are these devices (and TVs) going to come with built-in digitial tuners for all types of digital signals? That is, someone with The Dish or cable digital service can't take advantage of these devices yet, can they?
I thought the same thing, although the number I've come across is more like $210 when you include marketing costs.
Anyway, I was curious enough to look up the latest daily results (as of Wed.):
Jurassic Park III -> $19 million
Legally Blonde -> $2.8 million
Cats & Dogs -> $1.7 million
The Score -> $1.6 million
Dr. Dolittle 2 -> $1 million
Scary Movie 2 -> $979,000
The Fast and the Furious -> $956,000
Final Fantasy -> $793,000
Dr. Dolittle 2 (which has been out for 27 days) is currently in front of Final Fantasy (which has been out for 8 days). The Final Fantasy movie can be catagorized as nothing short of a complete failure, despite how it does overseas and on sales/rentals. A $200 million movie that brings in ~$30 million in the US box office is a disaster. There will be no Final Fantasy: The Movie 2.
Methinks the "break even" comment was just a Square fanboy trying to put a positive spin on things.
It's called AAUI. Don't know why they did that back then...but maybe there was a reason? Home networks were scare back then and a lot of universities hooked up their machines with BNC connectors instead of 10BaseT.
Anyway, if it's important to you, then do something about it. Drop $30 or so on an adapter for it. I'll even help you out: Asante AAUI Tranceivers

..the PS 2...turned out to have a powerful impact on gaming and virtual reality
Excuse me? So far, there's absolutely nothing special about the PS2, compared to current PC games or even Dreamcast. Maybe it's got some potential, but potential doesn't write great games by itself.
The only powerful impact the PS2 has had so far is emptying the wallets of those that didn't get a pre-order.
Of course you're not the only one. There are quite a few intelligent, rationally-thinking people out there who support Bush.
It's just that it's not hip and cool to vote Bush or Gore, so you have a lot of (mostly younger college) types voting Nader, Browne, whatever to rebel against the 'system'.
Sure there are things I would change about the 'system' if I could, but it's gotten America where it is today and it's not so bad.
Oh, and anyone who thinks Nader or Browne ever has a hope in hell of winning the presidency, wake up already! The majority of America is very conservatively centrist. If the top two candidates were Bush/Nader rather than Bush/Gore, Bush would win by an even larger margin.
Multiplayer is sweet. Use anything from a dial in modem to a full T3. User supplies the bandwidth.
Yeah, multiplayer is sweet. but guess what? even the "lowly" Dreamcast comes with a modem (optional Ethernet module for broadband soon) that'll let them play online -- they can even play against PCs in Quake III! Every console from here on out will have internet capability.
And what about the other type of multiplayer? You know, the kind where you play against someone you actually know instead of some stranger across the country. Ever tried to play on a PC with your wife/brother/roomate/etc? What a pain! Consoles can make a party out of gaming.
Interface. PC has a lot more interfaces to offer from mouse, keyboard to joystick.
Welcome to the new millennium! Even the "lowly" Dreamcast has an optional keyboard and mouse. This is a non-issue.
Patches: If you find a bug in a PC game, release a patch, no problem. Find a bug in a console game, huh huh your screwed.
Not anymore! Say hello to the hard drive-equipped X-box. As an aside, how many console games can you name that have bugs? The simplicity of the standard console platform makes bugs a much smaler issue on consoles.
Mods: Ever seen a Quake2 mod for the playstation?
Welcome to the console revolution! Internet connection + hard drive = mod capability. I think you've been locked in your room alone with your PC for too long.
Eye Candy: What can a TV do 320X240 res? Most PC games I play are at 1024X960.
Whew! Took us a while to get to a valid point. Yes, you are correct; TVs are only capable of 640x480 -- sub-par by today's PC standards. But when consoles start supporting HDTV, watch out!
Sound: TV speakers aren't the greatest. PC gamers supply there own speakers from that little beep speaker in the case to a $5000 home stero system.
What? How can you even bring this up with the plethora of excellent home theatre set-ups available? Would you rather watch the Matrix on a nice home theatre setup or your PC? That's what I thought.
Play Diablo on the PC then try playing it on the Playstation, you will be disapointed.
I agree. Unfortunately, I think this statement shows that you're thinking about the history of consoles and not what's just around the corner.
It's The Man's way of trying to identify us geeks! If they can ID us on sight, they think we'll be less of a threat! Watch for these suits to soon become mandatory dress at all tech houses!
C'mon people, you really think Jobs would cripple his machines for spite? Please. He may have a massive ego, but it's not going to get in the way of his business sense.
Look at ATI's schedule: the Mac Radon won't even be available until September. Who wants to bet that they'll become BTO options at that time.
10 years? what??? The article says 1997...is it 2007 already?!
Sure, the core OS features (memory protection, preemptive multitasking, etc) have existed in other OSes for a while. But I wouldn't brag too much about BeOS. It's slick enough, but it's hurting from a lack of 3rd party support.
And besides, all those fancy OS features have been around for decades. You didn't think BeOS invented them, did you??
I'm not sure what advertising you're bummed about. Apple's current line of G4's *still* outperform the top PCs in certain applications. And CISC is inherently inferior to RISC...but Intel and AMD were smart enough to borrow design ideas from RISC chips to continue improving their CISC/RISC frankenstein architecture. Sure, Apple will always paint themselves in the best light possible; what company wouldn't? But they're not as bad off as all that. Certainly they're hurting in the MHz war, perceived performance, and actual performance in some cases. Hell, they've been stuck at 450/500 MHz "forever" -- it's not secret. But the move to the G4+ chips are a smart one, IMO. They realize that they need to match Wintel in MHz. Look for the machines to (hopefully) debut in January alongside Mac OS X. I'll pick one up then, if they do. Of course, there's always the chance that the G4+ won't be able to keep up with the rapidly advancing Intel and AMD chips. But does anyone here not believe the rumors that Apple's porting Mac OS X to x86?
I agree. Looks slick. And Apple's needed a robust kernal for a while now...the move to a solid BSD core is excellent. Obviously, there are still a few rough edges to smooth out, which is why they're delaying the official 1.0 release until January, I assume. But once it's completed, it looks like they'll have an OS that body-slams Windows.

Surprisingly enough, it is important!
I can't play multiplayer Mechwarrior 4.

Wow. That's a big shift...Nader and Browne are awfully far apart.
... the "useless propaganda" checkbox.
PC have ALOT of offer compared to console:
Your not keeping up, are you?

nVidia's just like Microsoft! They aren't content at just winning the graphics chip wars, they must smash 3dfx into oblivion!

I don't know about Napster but don't some of the latest peer-to-peer clients (Gnutella, et al) offer to let you listen as you're downloading?
Of course, if there were a lot of these fake copies floating around, it would get real frustrating real quick.
Or a filter list might work. If you get a bad copy, just flag the user so their results don't show up in your searches in the future.
There is only publicity, not bad publicity.
Tell that to Battlefield Earth, the movie.
