In my experience, ETL guys are the most obnoxious, self-important douches ever to walk the corridors of the building. Everything is "datamart this" and "database that", when all I can see is a handful of SQL hackers with a big budget and a loud boss.
When you have a educational system and culture that shields people from the effects of their bad decisions, even refutes the notion of causality, why would kids be encouraged to enter a field where causality is king? Isn't Obama going to pay their mortgage for them? Won't Al Gore save them from Global Warming? Won't giving $10 to a church save them from hell?
You're right - because someone came up with an elegant, no-moving-parts, no-training-needed design to clean the seawater, but it doesn't clean up the marshlands, it's useless.
ACM is a scholarly, research-oriented group. If you're looking for spoon-fed, PCMagazine types of charts and graphs, look elsewhere. Lots of text generally means that someone with brains has to interpret the data, because the interpretation is non-trivial.
$75 for a tablet? You get to a point where the cost of the packaging and shipping exceeds the product. When you have a large portion of a continent with no infrastructure, where the only real business is the military, does putting cheap Chinese tablets in the hands of poor kids really help?
