  1. Hedging? on Tim Cook: What's Good For the US Dollar Is Bad For Apple · · Score: 1

Is there a reason that Apple doesn't do currency hedging, despite all the transactions/holdings in foreign currencies?

  2. Should have kept the change.... on Amazon.com Pierces Reviewer Anonymity · · Score: 5, Insightful

If Amazon would keep that "mistake", I'd be tempted to pay for it. It seems like the people (in the article) that confessed to writing good reviews in bad faith did so to "rebut" bad reviews. If the original reviews weren't anonymous, the authors wouldn't have had to use an underhanded tactic.

Alternately, just publish the list on /. - I bet the sites would never be back up.

  6. Another issue of the Katzine on The Drone War · · Score: 1

This is a good opinion/observatin piece from Katz, but it falls apart in a couple of places. For instance, I think Katz doesn't realize that one consequence of developing a new weapon or methodology for warfare will inevitably lead to a counter-weapon or methodology. As an example, what's to stop some other country from developing superior "drones" on the sly? What if someone circumvents the whole issue of fighting against drones by taking people hostage, attaking the drone controllers indirectly, or simply dispersing into neutral geographic areas?

You know, according to a professor of mine, Albert Einstein was said to have never memorized any addresses, phone numbers, etc. When asked why, he responded that it was pointless to memorize anything if you can look it up somewhere. Of course that's an extreme, but if the smartest person in the world thought that way, who are you/I to disagree?

From what I've read on the Dell forums (I have the I8k too), you CAN upgrade from an ATI to NVidia GeForce Go, by replacing the video card in the socket. Several people have reported successfully upgrading, although it does void your warranty. I believe the video chip is for sale, in the refurbished sales category, if I remember correctly.

I hate to be a stickler, but the comment about "if you lost a ton on JDS Uniphase, Ciena, Corning, Nortel and the rest, rest easy that you have helped build the future and inspire innovation" has no relevance to building the fiber infrastructure.

The only time these companies would have benefited from your investment was when they offered primary and/or secondary IPOs. After that, buying their stock only raises the value of the stock for the people who own it (mainly executives, institutions, and joe public).

  11. Why not in Japanese? on Could Square Re-Dub the "Final Fantasy" Movie? · · Score: 3

Here's a question....Why isn't it in Japanese also? You'd think it would go over great in a technology-driven society, even ignoring the fact that Square is Japanese. Did they make a conscious decision not to do it in Japanese. It seems like English & Japanese would appeal to the largest amount of people who would be likely to want to see it.

Pardon me for mentioning something basic, but maybe the reason why no one's throwing money around at stuff that "does not participate in the world in an *Economically* significant way", but I sure wouldn't spend my hard-earned money on some idea that makes 2% of the tech-workers happier, and has almost no chance of making any kind of a return. If your ideas are so much better than the ones that are out now, eventually they'll become a reality. But seeing as how I don't have money coming out of my arse (pardon my French, s'il vous plait), I can't ever see myself throwing money at something like that. I don't mean to attack you or anything, but all of us aren't sleazy, rich venture capital associates. We have to pay for food, rent and families. If they're hungry, who cares what some guys in a cubicle 200 miles away care about their work environment.

I'm not sure if this is obvious or not, but if you have a good bit of free time, reading through posts on /. (on usage of linux for whatever reasons) might help. Even if you don't know exactly what's going on, you at least get exposure to the terms and methodologies.
