haha I love how religious people need everything explained to them in excruciating detail. it's so cute.
You see, a straw man argument "is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position" whereas what I did above is what's called metaphorical satire. Say it with me, met-a-for-ik-al, good! In this particular case, an average mentally deranged priest by the name of José Gabriel Funes, while speaking in his capacity as the official Vatican astronomer, declared that all other potential extraterrestrial intelligences must by definition fall under the jurisdiction of his particular brand of crazy religion. And then what I did was SHOW HOW BLINDINGLY IDIOTIC THIS IS by letting the reader take the opposite perspective of the hypothetical alien in this situation.
The fact that you seem to have taken it upon yourself to accept the metaphor with deadly seriousness and even expound on it with your apparent belief in such mindbendingly stupid concepts as 'spiritual imperfection' really speaks wonderfully to the state of wacky religious craziness that I was intending to satirize in my original post. thanks random religious nutter of average to lower than average intelligence! you're a star!
Hello Earthlings, my name Zorbo, I'm from the planet sh388wg32 in what you call the Andromeda galaxy and I think the time has come to reveal ourselves to you. The reason I am contacting you now is that we have some Good News for you creatures, the all powerful creator of everything (Zippin52, praise be His name) has a plan for you and everyone you know!!! Can I take a little of your time to explain why we're all imperfect and need saving in His forgiveness??!
Yes Catholic church, that is precisely how idiotic you sound right now.
What exactly is so "novel" about the description of the neutron initiator? This design of the "urchin" has been known for decades and hasn't been novel since the 50's. No one even uses them anymore due to unpredictability, all implosion weapons use pulsed neutron generators based on fusion of deuterium with tritium. If anything, the document merely serves to confirm that we've been right about our ideas on how the thing originally worked.
You will find, if you go back through the history, that sentance was written by me on 4/22/06. I of course meant it in the literal, physical energy related sense rather than in any metaphorical sense. However, if one considers the situation for a moment, I believe that it may also be argued to be true in the metaphorical sense as well. Everyone agrees that nuclear weapons are the most heinous, disgusting, inhuman devices ever created, but it would be laughable folly to blame the scientists who created them. We are the ones who pushed the scientists to create more and more of them, and they do serve a purpose wheather they're detonated or not. We now have the capability to destroy ourselves, possibly utterly, if we so choose. The previous ~200,000 years of human history on the planet, and our collecitve 'waking up' to our place in the universe (an occurrence solely facilitated by the plodding application of science) have been in a sense, preparation for this current phase of our existance. Nuclear weaponry is an inevitability of our current level of understanding of nature and our simultaneous ignorance and stupidity regarding our own prehistoric bellicosity. Welcome to the final exam.....
mhmm. except that the mechanism provided by this study is vastly more plausable and the older paper claiming neutrons from fusion in lightning were never published in a reputable journal, let alone replicated by any one else.
"People who have read the actual paper (Transactions of the American Nuclear Society, vol 95, p 736) would agree that the results published leave no room for doubt that the neutrons are caused by the collapsing bubbles in a deuterated fluid - the appropriate control experiments were performed - the statistics are significant."
Well apparently everyone DOES NOT agree that there "can be no doubt" about such things. In fact, some very important physicists in the field vehemently DISagree. I find it also telling that you touting this paper as somehow being a huge blockbusting irrefutable landmark is not published Nature or Science or PNAS but in the obscure backwater Transactions of the American Nuclear Society. No doubt though that you will simply respond with frantic handwaving about some contrived prejudicial exclusion of "the mainstream journals". lol
I confess to being baffled as to why people continue to indulge themselves with the delusion that such a proposition as yours will ever be possible. Considering these twographs how could the prospect of "weaning ourselves off of high energy consumption" ever be seen as anything but irrational hope? No, the exponential growth of energy consumption by human civilization and the inextricably associated increases in life expectancy and living standards are undeniable. The energy consumption of the world will continue to increase exponentially and unabated for the forseeable future. The trick then, is to find a source of energy which can simultaneously provide the staggeringly huge needs of the future while also being environmentally benign. Controlled nuclear fusion, among a few other potential energy sources, fits this need nicely.
Maybe its just a language thing but I imagine you to be one of those people who gets upset when someone uses a fork instead of a wisk to beat eggs because "oh noes! it wasn't intended to be used like that!".
That's ironic because it would be you who is indeed the fool for mocking that person. Heat is heat, its all kinetic energy. A lightbulb left on in a room in the winter is in fact nearly 100% efficient at converting all the electricity it uses into heat that goes into the room that its in. The "wasted" heat of the lightbulb is going to heat the room and the (relatively small amount of) light that is absorbed by the walls and is then converted to heat goes to heat the room. It's not rocket science people. Your friend may in fact even be saving money on heating if the price of gas that winter is particularly high. If he is using electric heat, there will of course be no savings BUT THERE WILL BE NO LOSS EITHER. I really don't know what is so difficult to understand about this. Use your heads people.
There is one other instance I can think of. In 1990 a disgruntled employee of the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station in New Brunswick dumped heavy water from the primary heat transport loop of the reactor into the office water cooler. The water was of course heavily contaminated with radioactive tritium due to neutron bombardment of the deuterium in the heavy water and 8 people recieved significant radiation doses. On person recieved about 20 REM (200 mSv)! Not nearly deadly but not nice at all.

oops you forgot one: probably somewhat true.
Is it true that a result at the KATRIN spectrometer showing a neutrino mass of 1eV kills TeVeS once and for all?
wow you're like so super smart. I wish I could be as smart as you someday! lol. moron

No not a troll, just a common imbecile who hasn't read a word of Sagan outside of the quote from this article.
you moron, its called magnetostriction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetostriction and it has nothing to do with radio waves.

you're dumb
I confess to being baffled as to why people continue to indulge themselves with the delusion that such a proposition as yours will ever be possible. For some reason I can't remember what "the bad thing" was...........
Maybe its just a language thing but I imagine you to be one of those people who gets upset when someone uses a fork instead of a wisk to beat eggs because "oh noes! it wasn't intended to be used like that!".
note that I said "in winter" and I wasn't talking about a comparison with heat pumps and thier associated COPs but simple resistive heaters instead.
why is that funny? its a perfectly valid statement so far as I can see.
What are you like 90 years old? Be hasn't been used as a phosphor for the past 50 years.

and what color are the skies on your home planet?
Compu-a says........yes?
wow, you sound like you're an enourmous gaping asshole.
wow thanks! hey, did you know that the sky is blue?!
I'm afraid you are wrong about the neutron cross section absorption of deuterium and its transmutation into tritium. page 5.
